Urban Kayaking | Exploring Nature Among Planes, Trains, and Industry in Queens, NY

Two Feet Outdoors

Күн бұрын

Join me on a kayaking adventure on Flushing Creek in Queens, New York, as I encounter airplanes, trains, wildlife, and unexpected nature from a unique perspective. This interesting waterway divides Queens into eastern and western halves. The creek has many industrial sites along its shores and empties into Flushing Bay, where LaGuardia Airport is located. As part of my journey, I also take a short drive to Flushing Meadows Corona Park, where I paddle Meadow Lake and explore another section of Flushing Creek. These two sections are only connected by 2,000 feet of underground tunnels. Even though this creek has been polluted over the years, this was an incredible experience and it's always fun to go to a new spot and take you along for the ride.
Fun Fact: Flushing Meadows Corona Park was the location of the 1964 New York World's Fair and features the famous "Unisphere" which is a stainless steel model of Earth.
If you have any ideas of where you'd like to see me go next, let me know in the comments!

No gloves. You pick up trash despite the lack of gloves. This affirms to us all that you are not just a recreationalist; you're a conservationist. Nice to know that there are at least some folks, like yourself, who give a s**t, the quiet heroes making a difference. Yet ANOTHER reason I support you!

Very cool to see all of that infrastructure from the water. I went to college near LaGuardia Airport. They have improved the parks and along the waterways a lot during the early 2000’s I saw the work in progress while crawling in traffic on the Van Wyck Expressway at times. Thanks for helping to keep it clean. I remember the globe from the Stark Expo in the Iron Man movies & the other three disc shaped observation decks of the NY state pavilion from Men in Black where one turned into a back up space ship.

Personally, I think it's interesting and doesn't drag on. I literally edit all my clips, put it together, and the length is the length. I never have a predetermined length in mind. @@TwoFeetOutdoors Surely I will, although I'm already 100% sure that I will love it. Somehow, you and Kelsey have found the magic balance, the perfect way of putting just the right amount of dialogue and information during the editing so our attention won't be distracted from contemplating the landscapes, while we still get enough detail about the route and the location. I believe that this is one of the major reasons why your channel is growing fast, and organically. And, please, accept my apologies for any grammar error. I moved down South from NYC and got so much shade from smart alec people (many had never even been to NYC but had opinions anyway), It was common to hear "I couldn't live in a place like NYC with no nature around". I snubbed them and told them I hunted wild Mushrooms in Old Growth Forest in Manhattan's Inwood Park and Salt Water Fly Fished the Nature Preserve in Breezy Point/Fort Tilden regularly....and took the Subway to both. I would add that Central Park is a renown Birding spot and a noted migratory bird stop over. One of the biggest Largemouth Bass I've ever caught was in Central Park Pond. They didn't know what to say after that. They also don't have Dragon Boat Racing down here ;)

Creek in Brooklyn I’ve cried that many of times going to work years ago. Yeah that water was filthy back then. In this video i have passed many of the areas. Didn’t know there was crabs in there. Matt and Kelsey, I have nothing to say about the video but to offer my warmest compliments. To be honest with you, I had to double check its length because, all of a sudden, it was over :) I was afraid that I had missed or unintentionally skipped some parts of it. Matt, you got me sitting on the edge of my chair during almost the entire duration of the video, especially during the part you were trying to find a way to pass through that barrier (10:38). I was afraid you might fall off the kayak, and the water looked way too polluted and full of unknown debris. And you also got me wondering what we'd find past those bunches of seagrass (40:25). What a wonderful surprise, with friendly people fishing for crabs. In my humble opinion, long videos are the natural way to go. You've found a niche of loyal subscribers that appreciate taking as much time as needed to enjoy, through your eyes, these unusual, precious experiences. Thank you very much, Matt, for bringing such an amazing content to us. Please stay safe and don't do anything that may harm you. Safety first and above everything else. Thank you, Kelsey, for your unique skills with the editing. You are amazing!

You are one of the good ones - good work. That area of Flushing Bay will stink to high heaven after a rainstorm in NYC - you'll smell it while driving close to the water or on the Grand Central. NYC is trying to build more infrastructure to prevent sewer outflows but we're not there yet.

nice trip, it's right outside my neighborhood of Flushing. Flushing Creek is very dirty where you were but thanks to gentrification the developers are looking for ways to clean up. If you want to know how dirty it is, go to the public water front behind Skyview center. Beyond the floating trash net it connects to the two lakes in Flushing Meadow Corona Park, but much of the waterway is covered and connected with culverts, you would have to dive and swim into.
