I am glad you included a lockpick. That's a must for an EDC. I never knew about the one you showed in the video. Nice to know. I would remove one of those Band Aids and replace it with butterfly or zipper stitches. Stiches without anesthetic, most people will not be able to do it. I would replace the lighter with a small Bic wrapped in wick, but that's more of a personal preference. The fluid would last much longer in a small Bic. The Olight is an excellent choice. The pain killers is also smart, as well as the whistle. I never thought about adding a whistle before. Something extra I would consider is a couple of quarters and monetary bill and/or a spare ATM card or credit card. I would view that as being more important than the utility card, due to you having the Leatherman. You may find yourself in a simple situation where you lost your wallet and need cash or food/drink from a vending machine. I always carry a couple rolls of quarters in my glove compartment. It has come in handy on a few occasions. So I think having something like that in an EDC couldn't hurt. I like your approach btw. You're keeping it more realistic than others. Really nice EDC kit.

I have a similar sized peanut lighter that I've been experimenting with since I filled it in January 2017. It just passed its 5.5 YEARS light test in November 2022. Next check is scheduled for May 2023. I would never have believed it would last that long when I started. All that to say, yours has a LONG way to go before it needs a refill. Nice kit and thanks.

I have never understood why the wallet tools all seem to have bottle openers, but I have never seen one with an opening for a gas shutoff wrench. That is a must-have and easily implemented in a card tool with interior space.

The stupid designers think it's 1945, where all bottles have caps on them. 🙄 I know, it's silly, but sadly that's just how it goes. I think they mainly got it from thinking about Victorinox Swiss army knives that almost always had bottle openers on them. Such a waste of tool slot, since bottles can be opened other ways. And many smaller multitools designed in the US are probably made by hipsters drinking local IPA beers with caps on them, so they just assume everyone else does the same, when most of us are not stupid hipsters. 🤣

Good stuff and the urban scenarios make sense. I tend to EDC a very similar kit...but instead of being in a tin, it's distributed between my pockets, and zipped inside a money belt, which I've made into my own version of the expensive ''Wazoo cache belt''. So storm matches, plasters, alcohol wipes and other bits like safety pins, duct tape etc. are in the belt. 5th pocket on jeans contains LM Squirt, torch (flashlight) and small lighter. I supplement that with a SAK and peanut petrol lighter on an sbiner with my keys, hanging off a beltloop. This way the items that I use on a regular basis are readily available without having to take out and open a tin, and it doesn't take up space or cause bulges in clothing.

Thanks for commenting and sharing. It makes perfect sense but must take a minute to get ready in the morning 😅 Do you carry an EDC folder?
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 2 жыл бұрын
@@urbanknifeguy It doesn't really take more than a couple of seconds, the belt is on the jeans I'm going to wear. The other gear for my rotation is in a drawer in my nightstand but usually next day's carry is on top of it. Sometimes I carry a folder instead of an SAK (as the multitool - LM Squirt or better Nextool Mini) has the other tools I may need, but being in the UK it can't be locking. Today it's the Manly Wasp in S90V, a great knife for the price (just over 60 dollars when I bought it) albeit a tad rough around the edges but it has very strong backsprings and is a workhorse. Also steel liners inside the G10 scales for so it's robust as hell. Other days I might carry a Bokerplus Atlas instead. But at least half the time it's an SAK. Carrying a folder plus SAK plus multitool is a bit over the top as I live in London, most people think any kind of knife is illegal to carry. Can't scare the sheeple and I don't know how a policeman might react to me carrying so many blades even though they're all legal carry.
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 2 жыл бұрын
@@urbanknifeguy Actually I've been looking at getting another folder for my rotation, like a Spyderco/Byrd, or the French made TB outdoors Unboxer but none of them have liners inside the handles and I'm a bit wary, probably no need to but that's just me.
@urbanknifeguy

@@simonh6371 yes you guys have it tought with both the sub-3" blades and non-locking. I'm sure you are familiar with all the slip-joints available to you guys. I think it depends on who is making them and the thickness of the scales.

Love your work sir! Bear in mind, a modern antiseptic cream is typically very weak in its antiseptic properties. A couple of aspirin as well as some other pain relief (ibuprofen or paracetamol) can be a life saver for a stressed person with chest pain. Get them to chew up & swallow the aspirin: its blood thinning properties may buy them some time if it’s a cardiac event. A fine sliver off the side of a “ranger band” can be used as a fire starter ( it stinks BAD but if you really need to start one, it gives you options. Kind regards from Oz

This is a great EDC. *It's the most sensible urban EDC I've ever seen.* I also have my Bug in the tin. I wrap a wide ranger band around the circumference to aid in closure/waterproofing (if that happens to be the siltation I'm in). I also crimp the closing part very slightly for a better closure. I've had my Leatherman Squirt PS4 for 13 years and its's still going strong. You can use a small piece of sugar-free gum to fill a cavity if a filling pops out.

Don't take the negative comments too seriously. I do recommend the polite advice (CJ Johnson down there for example, his comment which you both discussed in a friendly manner) though, that you take the time to condense a bit more. Your production value, mic and camera, is great, you've got a good channel going here. But the average folk's time is finite, and you're here selling a concept to them so unfortunately some videos are harder to "sell" when they're longer. *shakes her head* Frankly I think you're trying to teach people as well as market yourself and your channel, that's why you're so thorough. The description text up there is detailed, I've yet to go to your channel and look at your guide (again, time lol) but it sounds like you're trying to help folk be BETTER prepared. To me, this kit's contents would be hard to ... define to others, who didn't already know and grasp what you were going for here. Everything in there is helpful, but it's (to me, I'm not an authority) a bit more like a "civilization" tin than an "urban" tin, but it would be a great thing to have in any environment as a supplementary "get home" tin. Heck it's got a lot of great stuff for wilderness preparedness in it already. But to me this would make a perfect pocket helper if I were say coming home from my many doctors appointments and couldn't reach my vehicle or someone else needed some tiny little bit of help. Modern folk seem oblivious to the need for string, cutting devices, and torch/flashlights. As a personal suggestion (just my own taste), you could get away without needing the matches in place of some higher grade kevlar cordage, I understand the eyedrops but I'd replace that with superglue (and forget I'd done that and glue my face shut)... And that flashlight, I don't hate it but be extremely careful with these miniflashlights. They're not all made equal, some have a great little LED wafer and brightness but are so poorly made that they will fail to work easily (always right when you need them). I've got a couple of really good mentions if I can dig them up later for you should you want, I'll look up your page and see your document. Didn't recognize that little one. Anyway here I was talking about time and wrote a book, my apologies and thanks if you spent some reading me. I watched your entire video and subscribed :D Like you said in your description, this is a supplementary kit to COMPLIMENT your heavier EDC Urban kit that would be very good to have in a nasty surprise situation. Even to have extra little gear to help someone else out with a bandaid or tape or light (heh I often forget men don't really carry purses, mothers the history of the world have been building "micro survival kits" before it was cool!) Thanks for your thorough video and effort, don't give up or get discouraged. Just learn to manage your videos the way I obviously manage my posts :D :P Best wishes my friend

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment Wren! No worries! I've been in the content game (online and offline) for a long time. I've also got another slightly larger YT channel on a completely different subject matter. So, I'm used to comments of all kinds. I read and consider all comments. I do believe everyone has a right to an opinion and I will defend that right. However, the receiver has equally to consider the opinion and determine its value, specific to the receiver's own value system, content vision and sometimes idiosyncratic preference. I personally enjoy long-form content which is why I produce longer content. Having said that, this is by far my longest video. And that was due to the nature of the subject. Most, if not all, of my other vids are of reasonable length I think (hope). As a content creator, I know and fully accept that the content cannot satisfy everyone because we are all different. So the goal is to find a matching audience and satisfy as much of them as possible. And, it is always a process of evolution and improvement to find the eventual sweet spot of quality and quantity. Ultimately, with good intention, quality work, strong work ethic and the uncontrollable luck factor, hopefully one finds that audience. But back to the tin. Was your idea for superglue for first aid to seal wounds? For the flashlight, Olight makes professional flashlights and this mini one is unlike the dollar store ones. It is mighty for what it is. Thanks for your thoughts and sharing! J C

I see 3 major scenarios: - Escape the city (go home) - Stay put (e.g. if you live in the city, or if you are in your office) - You are trapped ( elevator, collapsed building, metro/underground ) Going of this I have many thoughts and opinions. I might be wrong :D WATER Re-think the water situation, in many cities tap water needs power. Shops won't sell if there is no power and people will panic buy/take/steal/loot. So, water might not be as easily available. Honestly, I don't think water-purification will solve that. So, no changes to the kit but something to keep in mind. REDUNDANCY (Food for thoughts) Many items seem redundant and bordering on useless (realistically, what are you going to use a wrench for?). Anyone carrying an Urban Survival Tin, will carry a knife, multitool/SAK and almost certainly some first-item gear already. I see very little use for fire (don't use fire in an enclosed space), so you could cut down there massively. LIKE: - glow-stick - eye drops, might not be part of your FAK (though it would be better served if there were something to protect your eyes to go along with) - mirror (from the Wallet Ninja, maybe you could stick it to the lid of the tin) - the flex-pass. Though it seems useless where I live there is logic to that - whistle CONSIDER CHANGING - Flashlight. Get a flashlight that has a lantern function. And one that can be used while being charged (especially if you carry a power bank on a regular base) CONSIDER ADDING - glass breaker (people might be trapped in cars) - glucose pill (e.g. Dextro Energy) - (caffeine) chewing gum to help you stay alert - compass. You might be underground (subway) have poor visibility (e.g. dust or darkness + power outage (try spotting that landmark when it is not illuminated))
@etherealicer
@etherealicer 2 жыл бұрын
@Flashlight if you are someone who carries a baseball cap, maybe get a flashlight that can be clipped to the cap, could be handy (or actually hand-s-free).

@urbanknifeguy 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions! All great and well thought out. A compass does makes sense for night movement and if you are stuck underground in a subway system. Fire - still think it has its place to set a controlled fire as a distraction. I must test if this flashlight can be used when charging. It is tough to find flashlights of this size with lots of functionality. Most don't have the clip since they are keychain lights. I have the Olight Baton which has the cap clip. But it is too large for the tin. I have some more options in my larger urban micro-pouch which incorporates quite a few of your ideas. Will share that soon. Thanks so much! The rest are all good suggestions and I will consider how they can be switched in.

@@urbanknifeguy The newer Nitecore can be used while being charged. RovyVonn and Nitecore both have tiny flashlights with side-lights (not exactly a lantern, but better than the glow-stick). Looking at my situation, I already carry a flashlight on my keychain. So, for me (and for others probably too) it could make sense to carry a tiny powerbank (e.g. a credid-card-sized one). This could both charge your flashlight or your phone (which might be useful too). Fire is never really wrong, there are many uses for it. However, I think you went a bit overboard :D, probably don't need the matches and the petroleum jelly. I do like the lighter setup, that is really neat.

@@urbanknifeguy The story was told to me by my grandfather before he passed. He was a Ranger but honestly, it could have come from anywhere. The concept makes a lot of sense anyway. I would like to see a survival kit done up in a stainless steel bento box. They usually have a removable gasket seal (in case of the need to boil). The handles aren't long but one of those camp handle or mini vise grips could stand in. Haven't seen that variation yet and I watch A LOT of these kinds of videos.

Nice! Will look into that. I have a retro lunch box emergency kit which would be closest that will be released very soon! I've seen a couple of good stainless bento boxes that will work well as you pointed out.

You are the only one who has gone into more depth for first aid with the antiseptic cream and eyedrops. Most of the other youtubers add a bandaid and painkillers and call it good! I buy tiny 5g sachets of triple antibiotic cream which is different from antiseptic cream. I also have a few hollow cotton swabs with liquid iodine for wound cleaning and water purification. I have some blood clotting powder in sachets and antihistamine liquid filled tablets for allergic reactions. If the patient is unconscious, you can save their life by rubbing the antihistamine liquid on their gums. Nice kit, except for the wallet ninja - which IMHO is useless and redundant with your multitool

Fantastic items and uses! Too bad the Leatherman PS4 Squirt is discontinued, it was the best tool for altoid tins builds! You can still find it but prices are a bit too high now! I made myself one of those tin kits but it doesn't contain anything first aid or sewing: I have a capsule with different normal and stormproof matches and a striker, Two of those chemlights I love them mostly found in fishing shops, A Ruike S11 small knife, A small niteize locking carabineer if I need to hook the light somewhere, A nitecore tiki GITD keychain light, A nitecore NTK05 it's a folding scalpel holder with a spare blade, A micro Clipper lighter It's something like: 2 ways to make fire, 2 ways to make light, 2 ways to cut stuff! I'll definitely have to add a sewing needle with some thread, a straw with antiseptic cream, some bandaids and maybe some meds for headaches or stomach! Thanks for your videos and ideas!

Hey. I like the color of the leather. Did you choose the regular brown or the vintage brown? Looks like there are a couple options. Thanks. It’s a hard decision on whether or not to get the clips or the belt loops or make it like yours. Like the clean look and probably wouldn’t have on my belt but it’s be nice to have in the woods or something. I wouldn’t wear it in town so I’ll probably get it without.
