Very important subject! I’ve been doing this for over 30 years(7 of which in California) I do not understand why our dear Washington state is not allowing it(under certain caveats). Most of my adult life I’ve been riding in Israel 🇮🇱 where we have it even better as bikers are allowed to use the right shoulder(not the left one) any time traffic is moving slower than the speed limit… Yes a motorcyclist’s paradise it is 😃😃 Thanks again 🍻🍻

I'm glad this video is getting some folks to talk about it. There were times on my Palms, Pines & Fishing Lines trip when I was in other states and was frustrated that I couldn't lane-split legally when it made perfect sense to.

He Micheal, good to see you back again and in good health! And hope you get that 10.000 subs soon!. As to the lane-splitting ,for me (and many others in Europe) we will never go there i think. Simply because the highways are less wide then the are in the US. Filtering we can do, and we do. Speed differential is key, but also awareness by the "auto-driver" . They are the biggest danger because when i slow traffic they tend to swap lanes without checking their mirrors.

Thanks! Happy to be back. Yes, auto drivers do the same here - they just go without looking. We can always count on them to do that.

Those studies are interesting! I got no problem if the traffic is slow and tight but I’m happy just cruising with the traffic. There’s enough ‘I just didn’t see him’ out there as it is. Safe riding to you.

Lane splitting is extremely dangerous at any skill level. A rider can have a million miles of experience lane splitting and it only takes one sneak to take you out and while your laying in the road severely injured or dead, the driver will say, "I didn't see him." He's going to get a slap on the wrist, his insurance premium will increase, but the driver that hit you or took you out is going to go on with his life as if nothing happened to him. You will either end up on a respirator, in a wheel chair or 6 feet under. WARNING: Even though lane splitting is legal in California, make every effort not to lane split. Take a look at some of the lane splitting accidents that have been uploaded on You Tube. Lane splitting is a deadly ride.

Thanks for watching and for commenting. I agree, someone will change lanes and cut you off if you are lane-splitting. It happens to me all the time. I believe it is my riding skills and my adherence to the speed differential guidance and other 'best practices" the CHP has recommended that have kept me healthy. What is dangerous or not will differ for different people - it's a subjective term. That's why I stick to pointing to the experts for opinion on that, as I've done in this video. The study I mention was conducted with methodologies similar to those used to determine the safety of drugs and medical protocols. If one is comfortable with the possible dangers of taking drugs or following a doctor's advice, one should be comfortable with similar assessments of other areas of research. As for the KZbin videos of people getting cut off, I intend to address those in a future video. Thanks again.

Lane splitting is prohibited in Germany and also in Europe. Just like driving past stationary cars. Most bikers still do the latter. Lane splitting is dangerous as we don't have a speed limit. I would, however, welcome it if at least "overtaking on the right" was allowed on the Autobahn. kind regards Matthew

I hadn't thought about the fact that you guys have no speed limit on the Autobahn. I think I would agree that I wouldn't want to do it in that case either. Reality here is that often traffic in the leftmost lanes travels at 75-80mph (120-128 kph) and some motorcyclists will still lane-split at those speeds, though it is rare and usually the young sport bike kids.

It's not illegal in all parts of Europe. I'm glad we can split lanes in The Netherlands, I really don't like being a stationary, vulnerable target at the end of a (slow moving) congestion line where cars come in with 100+ km/h and they could rear-end me very easily. I think it's much safer for riders but some take it too far and go to fast.

@@martij30 Thanks for your commment. You bring up a point I plan to discuss in a future episode...protection from being rear ended. It is a big "pro" for lane-splitting.
