I learnt to respect Lautaro's +10 combat strength against civs in a golden/heroic age by going for a religious victory as Mali, getting an exodus golden age, marching my apostles over to Mapuche territory and being horrified at how badly they were outmatched in theological combat. It turns out an exodus golden age is not always the best time to spread your religion, not when you're up against Lautaro.

The update that buffed Lautaro was the same update that fixed a bug in the game that prevented that natural wonder from spawning on randomly generated maps.

Some civs seem like they benefit more on higher difficulties, than lower ones, and I'd put the Mapuche in that category. Deity AI is more likely to get golden ages and produce more units that can be killed for the loyalty bursts. It's kind of fitting considering the history of Lautaro.

Low food starts are such a pain. I always want to play Highland map but hate the stagnation I always end up with due to lack of farms. This is super helpful!

"Low food start" with 2 sheep, 2 wheat and 2 food luxuries within working distance of the cap? You should see some of the starts I get if you think this is bad! Always interesting to see Mapuche though. It's one civ I really can't get to work so it's fun to see a master of the game take it on.

You were clear that you would kill units. Therefore, it's entirely in the spirit of the challenge to kill that settlers and steal his city that way. You're just skipping the free city stage like Eleanor of the Old Gods.

Hey, I’m late, but anyway… I would’ve moved south-east in the beginning to be closed to the wheat. Then rush the wheel and feudalism to solve those food issues. Tedious and long, but an easy way out of a restart with those juicy plains hills

Question: If you are flipping cities does that mean you won't get the normal amount of grievances? Like I know you get some for owning someone's else city etc

You gain grievances when you occupy. If you peace out with some of their cities now on your side, you also get a grievance penalty, but if it asks you if you want to LIBERATE the city and you decide to keep it, then no grievances will come from occupation, but maybe allying with an enemy or being too close due to the city you captured. Best Use: Kill a Civ down to one city that will loyalty flip, peace out and take all cities sans the city they have left, capture last city after free state appears. No grievances from keeping occupied cities, no permanent Civ Killer -5 DP, BUT… No +5 era score for killing a Civ.

There’s a small “O” symbol that will let you know if a city is occupied in the name tag over the city center. Cities are no longer occupied in peace, but the AI will remember you took their cities

To return to this question - NO - capturing a city that's flipped to being free does not give you grievences. The fun thing about this run was the fact that I barely generated any grievences at all!

Just going to say, taking a settler is technically not taking a city. Your only taking innocent refugees under your wing, obvious exiles from Gran Colombia. You could see they were being chased out by warriors from Germany and Colombia.

Hmmm - food for me because at least with low production you can frow a city out and Pingala it to get science and culture. Low food just keeps your city stuck small for ages and you don't ever get to building anything useful
