⁠I think the designation MEU changed from MAU when Al Gray became Commandant. He made a lot changes to the Marine Corps. His attitude was to increase warrior skills and raise the standard for combat arms in the Corps. He was quite a guy, he drove around in a jeep and was always in cammies.

My Dad was fortunate not to go down with the ship in WW2. The troops were being transported to the South Pacific islands when they struck a mine. They all except for two swam to shore from the deck. The ship listed into the deep waters and sunk within hours. Today tourists scuba dive to the depths to get a glimpse of the Coolidge. Only expert divers can dive to its depth of about 150 feet near the shore. Maranatha ''Lord Come Quickly'' God bless all souls on deck and below. Please save them from all of harm's way. I respectfully disagree because one lucky missile can wipe out 2,000 Marines and a lot of birds. My opinion is that each carrier strike group should have several smaller amphibios ships with 400 to 700 Marines, and less birds on each.

@@voidwalker9223 A "lucky missile" is not fired alone. An enemy would fire many missiles at a ship and hope one of them is lucky enough to get through our defenses. Therefore, the more ships we have -- the more targets the enemy has to fire at. And this decreases the chances of getting lucky. But if the enemy does get lucky with a strike on one of our vessels, then it is not as big of a loss.
