Unfortunately, USAF Security Forces-(proud to have done this job, might I add)-the good people seen here providing security, don’t have much in the way of awesome, fantastic military hardware. We simply make the best out of our up-armored HMMWVs and training. This exact movement was and will continue to be exercised and practiced regularly for as long as nuclear weapons and assets exist. In the summer of 2001 we saw a very similar convoy heading south on I35. Similar looking truck, but surrounded by white vans with lots of antennas. Each van was occupied by 6 - 8 very serious looking young men. One of the vans would stop at every overpass ahead of the truck and scan the overpass with binoculars. There was a helicopter overhead. The trailer looked really solid. It obviously did not have flimsy aluminum sides. The convoy turned west on I40, probably headed to the Pantex nuclear facility. I imagine that the security level increased a lot a few months later.

While riding a destroyer for my first-class midshipman cruise in the late '70s we were the duty "show-off" ship during some civvie festival, and we got to tie up at a dock downtown to give tours to the locals. At one point I was standing watch as USAO (Useless Standing Around Officer :-) when the prototypical Little Old Lady In Tennis Shoes came stomping up, leveled a steely horn-rimmed glare at me, and said, "Young man - I want you tell me RIGHT THIS INSTANT if there are nuclear weapons on board this ship!". She said that loud enough that you could hear it all across the fantail, and probably all the way to the forecastle. Over her shoulder I saw the officer of the deck break away from talking to another group of visitors and head my way, hoping to eliminate the possibility of me saying something stupid. (Who, me? :-) I looked her right back in the eye and said, "Ma'am, the official word on that is 'I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of nuclear weapons onboard USS William V. Pratt'. But the God's honest truth, ma'am" - and here I saw a look of terror come into the OOD's eyes, as he saw his foreshortened-and-all-too-brief career flash before them - " is that I am FAR too junior to have any idea whatsoever about that". "Humph!", said little-old-lady-in-tennis-shoes, and she proceeded to stomp off in search of someone else to annoy. :-)

I enjoyed that. I was on the uss Alaska, A trident missile boat. That was the first question everyone asked us. We would “ I can’t confirm or deny the existence of nuclear weapons on board”. We would raise the question “ what do you think? “. “ we are a missile boat. “. The other question that was fun was” would y’all really launch nuclear weapons?” . I would say” tell your Russian friends, Yes”. Some folks would even ask” how do y’all breathe?”. “We are trained to hold our breathes”. Like breathing on a submarine is different than on land. I have been asked “ do you glow at night?”. “Only with my wife”. Hey, Russians and Chinese folk monitoring KZbin, for real, don’t ever launch nukes at the USA. We can shoot them down. ( thanks Reagan and generous taxpayers). Then all of you will experience a true hell on earth. Every trident crew out there will launch. You can not stop a trident launch. Don’t believe the Hollywood movies about our missile boats. That’s all pure fiction. Rickover was a paranoid intelligent genius capitol SOB of an man with an unlimited budget. Fifty years ago we were 200 years ahead of y’all. Be smart give up your nukes. The USA will never use Nukes on a non nuclear armed country again. Your early generation nukes only make you a target. Just give them up. God bless.

I was a tow truck operator that worked near navel bases. I had to rescue a broken down transport truck that was hauling nuclear reactor parts. The truck had a similar escort and had guns aimed in my general direction the whole time. The big difference was the trailer had proper radiation HAZMAT placards. That trailer is only placared for explosives. So it may be part for a ICBM or nuclear warhead there is no way it's the actual warhead. Even if an attacking force defeated the security, I doubt they could just drive away with the warhead or trigger it to blow. There's security measures in place to prevent it being stolen. Also, like another comment here said, a reaction force is on standby to rain hell down on any attacker should they defeat the security.

When I was stationed at March AFB in the 70's the nuclear weapons were stored on the other side of the freeway from the main part of the base. They would change them out occasionally and this huge flatbed truck would haul it over the overpass with lines of guards on either side of the bridge with m16s at the ready. Must have been quite a sight for people unused to being around a bomb that can take out a whole city. But my barracks was the closest to the flight line and those B52's would be out there revving their engines on and off all night every night, ready to go to Russia at a moment's notice. I never really thought about how many nuclear weapons might be over in the weapons depot, but I would guess it was a couple dozen at least. Back then we had so many, but was before the SALT Treaties and I think we had in the 32,000 range. So maybe we had a lot more than a couple dozen, there could have been many times that. It is hard to store than many bombs. Sleeping within a mile of a bomb that was primed and ready to go, seems kind of crazy now, but never really thought about it then.

From ‘62 to ‘63 in South Korea I was the gunner in the lead truck on nuclear convoys that would take us through areas where attempted hijackings had occurred. A year before a woman shoved an empty baby carriage in front of a convoy in attempted ambush. They ran over the carriage and shot her. Nothing is allowed to stop a nuclear convoy! If someone blocks the road, you knock him off the road.

My dad, a trucker, got behind one of these convoys a time ago. Dad had to slow down so he could keep some distance from said convoy. Some other truckers, not knowing why my dad was driving speed limit, started to pass him. One truck was oblivious to the convoy and was soon stopped immediately by two suv cop cars with guns drawn. Guy was shocked and kept hands raised as a Apache looking attack helicopter, that was escorting, came out of nowhere swooping by. It was funny as hell to watch. They did not f*** around
