+Balto He was wondering if Canada will mess with you, not America. They have strict gun laws.
@alexgorecki72829 жыл бұрын
+Steve Jones yes and no, yes as in Canada they have strict gun laws, and only certain type of guns you are allowed to have, if you have a illegal gun in Canada, and the police decide to investigate your house as some people complained or something stupid you would be charged, prisoned, or both. The No part if you have a legal gun and you have license for both Canada and America, you won't be charged, and if you have a legal gun in Canadian standards than yes, you are allowed to keep it.
@Freepepsi428 жыл бұрын
+Steve Jones I think it would depend on your own citizenship. If you are a Canadian, you are subject to Canadian laws and regulations even if part of your home is technically in another country. The same way if your house is on a town line (Happens where i'm at in Toronto) you either live on one side or the other.
@jgroenveld12688 жыл бұрын
+Steve Jones I'm using what the Europeans do when they have a situation like you stated. The front door of the house often dictates the jurisdiction of the entire house. You often see this with houses on the Belgium and Dutch border. Even though for example most of the house is on the Belgium side, if the front door is on the Dutch side, the Dutch laws apply. There have been situations where owners shift their doors to the side they want to be on - in some cases to take advantage of taxes, etc.

No. Americans are addicted to using fingerprints for EVERYTHING (banking, going to Disney, getting mortgages, going to work, etc, etc). In Canada, the only time you get fingerprinted is when you're arrested. I actually asked around and I have only ever found two co-workers who have used their fingerprints for anything else, and both worked at terrible minimum wage jobs that required fingerprints. I've also worked at terrible minimum wage jobs, but never had that happen, so, like most Canadians, my experience is fingerprints == jail.

This discussion is silly beause there is NO US CANADIAN BORDER!! As a former upstate New Yorker who lives in Southern California I know the difference between "going to Canada", and crossing a real border.into Mexico. Harassing people in a small town is pointless. We need an open border system like the "Schengen System" which encompasses most of western Europe. For a terrorist enter Canada is entering the US, and vice versa. The real border control needs to done at US and Canadian airports.

Also regardless of what decision they would make, the people of the city would be angry.
@Kartkid0248 жыл бұрын
***** That is in a sense the way it use to be and both Countries split the taxes and what not. With the situation now one country would have to say they want to completely give up their half and the other would gain everything. Neither country is willing to give away. Canada is going to look at the US and say that it is their problem since they want to raise all the security and that they should give it away. Where the USA is going to say is the reason the security was raised is because Canada has failed to do their part and keep out illegal citizens and terrorist from using Canada as a gateway into the US so they should have to give up the town. As far as doing it like the JSA in Korea, I don't think it would work. Yes people are free to pass through the boarder in that are as they wish, but it is still very restricted. They have a curfew and they typically aren't allowed to interact with those from the North. Also you would have to very highly restrict access from those that are up there to visit. Both sides would have to clear customs if they ever wanted to leave the town too. Also I think it would cause a problem with taxes and citizenship.

Children of a common mother have a border with so much security? If there is a European Union of over 25 nations all with cultures and histories which span millennia vs centuries can have open borders it is sad to see Canada and the US have this. Seriously even without the EU as a incentive to open the border, just the gain of money that it costs to patrol the 49h parallel and for it to be put into much better use like healthcare or the ailing education system, is incentive enough.

its sad but necessary! we are feeling the same tensions building in Europe! but terrorism is no respector of tradition or peaceful cohabitation, and small, unpoliced crossings are just the place to infiltrate! i hope the communities survive this necessary imposition...its now up to the communities to make it work!

@mustange55011 жыл бұрын
While yes we don't have to worry about people in Canada committing acts of violence on the U.S side or visa versa, that does not mean a terrorist could not use this small peaceful town as means to gain access. Please have an open mind here I am not preaching fear or being paranoid, but it just takes that one man with a major explosive to do the U.S people or Canadian people harm, and what better way to get into the U.S or Canada.. a Small quiet town where nobody suspects anything, to me seems pointless to have boarder patrol anywhere if this place has been open the way has for so many ears....

@mustange55010 жыл бұрын
I am not talking about kicking people out. Just like when I visit my friends in Canada I go through a boarder crossing this should be no different that's all I am saying.

Bewr Wadf First going in a conversation with an attitude like yours you never going to get people to agree with you. Second yes my life has been affected by a terrorist . But its not really about that its other things as well, I won't waste my time explain them to you, judging by how you speak, you either seek attention, or simply have limited conversational skills., so I won't waste my time here. I am not sure it is even wise for me to ask this to you as I don't think your response back to me to the question or to this reply will be intelligent enough for me to care, but I will ask any ways. What exactly are you saying here? do you think we should have open national boarders, don't just think about Canada think about the entire world here.
@carlosandregoes10 жыл бұрын
All of the terrorists that ever got to the US crossed the borders legally. If you wanna take your argument serious you'd have people checking IDs between NY and NJ. That'd mean a police state and the end of America as we know it. Closed borders prevent peaceful cooperation between peoples. We have a lot to lose by closing them, just like we have a lot to lose by not trading with other people.

Dissolve one of the towns. I'm American, dissolve the US town, give Canada the library. Who cares? As if it's crucial in US/Canada relationships. The town has like 700 people, all old, no industry....relocate them, demolish their old homes, give Canada the library, go on with life. The two communities have different languages. What's the fucking point? Why waste money securing a useless, dying town? So Jacque and John can share book recommendations face to face?? Huge loss losing such a rich cultural exchange alright. The world isn't a whimsical, quaint little utopia. Borders exist for a reason. Safety, even the likely excessive pursuit of it, is worth demolishing a useless town of 700. A tax dollar waste to secure/accommodate such a negligible town.

In the U.S. there are two different types of passports, the "passport book" and the "passport card." The passport book is your typical U.S. passport with pages for visas. The passport card looks like a driver's license. If you travel by land or boat to/from Canada one may use the passport card. If you travel by air to/from Canada you must use the passport book. But a U.S. citizen must have a passport of some kind to enter the U.S. or Canada. The passport card is cheaper than the passport book.

Are you from mainland EU (Schengen)? I'm an EU citizen but from the islands (Britain). We don't allow uncontrolled border crossings except the UK-ROI border as we share the Common Law system with Ireland which means no policeman can stop you and demand ID (which we don't carry) so our security must be our border. It's the same in USA and Canada but mainland EU uses Civil Law allowing police to stop you and demand ID when they wish so security is enforceable not just at borders but on any street.
@ooglefluffg8578 жыл бұрын
Why don't they just have border control on the roads leaving the town with free movement allowed within? Just like the library but for the whole town. The vast majority of the border is unguarded anyway so I don't understand why this is a problem. You could drive for an hour in either direction and all there would be to stop you would be a gap in the trees. A road or wist-high fence at most.
@beckysavage82206 жыл бұрын
I am an American that lived in St.Clair and Lorretvile Quebec Canada. I have crossed at that border . It would be an act of prejudice to enforce the borders only for Mexico . The rules enforced may be inconvenient but as with any laws must be observed by all.
It should be that you only have to show your citizenship to be able to cross from Canada to the US....

Everyone who points to Europe and says we should open our borders, let me ask you this, how many European countries disagree on a fundamental issue like gun control? Americans believe they have the right to bear arms and these weapons often wind up in the hands of criminals. Canada doesn't share a border with Switzerland, they share a border with one of the most violent countries in the world.

Good question I too would like to know that. Years ago you did not even need a passport to get into Canada. All you had to do was show an id or drivers license and was a few second process.
