As a fellow security professional it always makes me a bit sad to see the state of corrections in the US. We could do a hell of a lot better, and reducing volume is a big part. Reducing volume will sadly never happen in the US as the for profit prisons (ie, slave labor) put big money into pushing strict and restrictive laws, to get more bodies behind bars and making their products. A lot of stuff "made in the USA" be it belts or licence plates was made with slave labor in our prisons

You can't use the experience you get in prisons in future job applications, including prisoner firefighters, and the required check box of having been a felon reduces chances of getting a job significantly when out of prison. Not to mention the prisoners get paid peanuts. 12 to 40 cents an HOUR, and they basically have full on jobs. It's honestly ridiculous. Your opinion does count, but it's unfortunately misguided. Always make sure to inform yourself on topics before diving in.

Just shoving people into a concrete box hasn't done shit to improve the crime rate, it just turns people into worse versions of themselves if they ever do get out. And because of the felon mark, many end up back in prison because they're effectively locked out from becoming part of society again for the rest of their life. This is why we're horribly overdue on reforming or just straight up starting over, with how we deal with crime instead of this thinly veiled slave trade we deal with now that doesn't fix shit and only exists to reinforce itself.

In The Netherlands, inmates don't have to wear uniforms. There cells are also like 1 star mini apartment and are more focussed on rehibilitation rather than punishment. Also, please note I have never been inside a real Dutch prison and I'm not planning on commiting a crime in order to be sent into 1.

@lil_diabetes I mean it Kind of comes down to pragmatism. If a society is Pragmatic, they will try to spend as little as possible to get the least criminals on the street. The Norwegian prison System seems to me to have accepted that "justice being served" Is not a universal concept for victims and their relatives, and have therefor adopted a rehabilitation centered approach in order to avoid having to spend money on the same people over and over, basically admitting defeat when it comes to the states ability to "make things right" In a justice sense. If a society however were to be heavily influenced by morality as a universal concept, rather than an individual one, they might feel that justice can indeed be served by the state (or any institution for that matter) and then what you get is longer prison sentences and more punishment based corrections facilities. I personally prefer the former approach. However the latter can be deemed viable, but I feel like once you make incarceration a for profit, you no longer act within either of these philosophies and I have yet to hear of an acceptable third option that has a legitimate goal.

Because the United Kingdom is 'Constitutional Monarchy', the Queen is legally in control of the country and the head of state. This means most governmental departments work 'for' Her/His Majesty in a legal sense, but not a legitimate sense. E.g. HM Passport Service, HM Armed Forces, etc.

I worked as a registered nurse in both a large low to high security prison and a county jail. This conversation brought back so many memories. Love my COs. Even the Lieutenants I butted heads with constantly. Sometimes I miss those days but then I remember the horror stories. The drugs, the mentally ill, the suicide attempts, the assaults. Telling an incarcerated father that his son died. Broke protocol there and gave that inmate a hug. Doesn't matter what he did, everyone needs support in that moment whether they're wearing orange or not.

This reminds me of a story I was told by an ex prison guard during my career in private security. There were four female officers who are friends with each other, and all of them developed the same physical attraction to a rather handsome male prisoner. Now mind you when a person becomes a prisoner they become property of the state. Once you become property of the state you lose autonomy in this case they lose the ability to consent. These four female officers each took turns having sex with a prisoner and getting impregnated by him like it was some weird sorority initiation. Eventually they were found out and all four were charged with rape as the prisoner had no means to consent even if The Prisoner willingly engaged.

State of Missouri has no privately owned prisons and I'm so fucking glad. They are all state owned and it means all the workers with "MODOC" on their jackets get healthcare and PTO. My dad was a CO as well as Cook I, II, and almost III one time, and was a store clerk (officially) before changing jobs. My mom and I worked at the same prison for the health car company DOC contracted across the state. I was a mental health clerk, and my mom is still a therapist there. Despite the prison being a minimum security facility, I've met some fucked up people. At this prison is a program called puppies on parole where prisoners are allowed to help care for and rehabilitate dogs. Well, one guy came in and he was not allowed to be on this program. The reason? He was in prison for skinning and killing stray cats. I've met drug dealers, long time gangsters, career criminals of all shades, and - yes - even sex offenders of all stripes and colors. Believe it or not, a lot of them are not terrible people, they just need help. For some, that help is structure and schedules. For others it's psychiatric help (which we provided to those who were approved for it). For yet others, it's services we can't provide because we mingle them with way more dangerous people. It's unfortunate, but I am proud to say some places aren't the cesspool of corruption and evil we hear about all the time. Yeah, even the place I worked at had some violations of human rights, but they were dealt with soon enough, if not immediately. It's unfortunate, but monkeys and typewriters and you'll find some new-to-you ways to hurt people.

If there is anything being a CO taught me it's that nobody should have that role, especially long term. Many lose sight of right from wrong and end up bitter. It's also a very depressing environment to be in day-in and day-out. It also made me aware that many of the crimes committed are minor i.e marijuana possession and they just got caught. Either that or drug addicts or mentally ill who just get tossed in prison instead of getting the help they need. After a few months, I knew Law Enforcement wasn't for me, even with a now wasted degree.

Thank you for this!! Not everyone who ends up in prison is sociopathic killer. I made mistakes when I was 21, owned up to it, plead guilty, took my time, served it without causing anyone trouble and focusing on my education as well as working out and self reflection. It was an amazing year that really helped me come to peace with a lot of things and now I have been out for 7 years, straight as a ruler and feeling far better as a person for it. Honestly, without that year of isolation from the world I may have ended my existence, it brought me alot of solace. The prison guards I dealt with for the most part I just saw as people, people who had families and wanted to get home, people who were just trying to get by. There was no reason to treat them with malice or disrespect. I hope you found whatever it is that fulfils you my man. Have a great day!

Used to work at a maximum security death row prison and it sucked ass, one of the scariest moments of my life was when I got off work and stopped to get gas this dude in a red dually started to follow home so I just circled around down town for like an hour while this man was on my ass. Eventually I just said fuck it and slept in the prisons parking lot.

One of my family members used to be a technician for Pelican Bay Prison in "The Shoe" They told me a lot about their experiences in Pelican Bay. They said that the biggest mistake of that prison was running this huge computer program designed for pharmaceutical stuff off a little windows XP PC under someone's desk.

I regularly interact with someone who teaches at a prison in the UK, and from what they said, the lockdown hit a lot of prisoners hard on the mental health front. Getting the mental stimulation of the classroom seems to be a major high point in a lot of their lives, which implies certain things about how the prison system treats prisoners.

UK Guards don't carry handcuffs??? I have three sets and I perpetually have at least one set loaned out to a newer hire until they can get their own set. i worked for serco for a month. they run everything from the Hong kong rail network to obamacare call centres. i had zero training too once they told me not to talk to my colleagues and i had to wait two hours to get help over the phone from their help desk. so glad i turned down that job offer to become a prison corrections officer

My dad was a cheif/ranger of the Iranian (e-ron) MP and he and his boys were basically prison guards of a base prison they had there to hold captured enemies so he has seen the riots and bs that Lea saw and one time he was sleeping at the base bunks while others had night shifts and during that time the army was at a bloody conflict with the Iranian mafia and when he and others were sleeping a prisoner manged to somhow reach his hands out of the bars grab the guard steal his keys unlock the door let the others out and get to the armory steal guns shoot the place up and get out and there were alot of people rioting so my dad and his boys grabbed their guns and starting using lethal force to surpress it he could give orders to kill so he choose to do so and only 11 out of a whole prison got out and all of them were recaptured and another time he was in the back of a truck and idk how but a mafia member snuck up behinde him and started choking him and then some others came did a good old sweep the leg and the member was captured
