As a native Beijing-ese, I'd say your Beijing accent might be a bit off sometimes, especially the -in and -ing endings. We don't have that noticeable nasal sound in Chinese. Don't mean to be offensive. Hope you don't mind 😊. Enjoy your videos as always. Thanks a bunch!

Nice vid Chris. I'm from Manchester, England (not Manchester by the Sea ;) ) and there are some UK accents that even native English speakers have trouble understanding....for example, thick Geordie (i.e. Newcastle-upon-Tyne) accents, thick Irish accents, or thick Glasgow ones.

His British accent is really intelligible, he's clearly studied RP really well. That being said, without significant exposure to British people, if RP is how you learn English then you might struggle in the UK a bit. There's been quite a significant shift in accent away from RP over the last couple of decades as regional accents are being given more prominence in state and private broadcasting, and migrant communities have started significantly impacting both local accents and idiolects. People who once might have spoken in an RP accent (that is, either ditching their local accent or not having been raised with it for whatever, usually financial, reason) are morphing into a new norm which is much more liberal with glottal stops both in the middle and the end of words. The whole "bo'le o' wa'er" meme thing. I've certainly observed it in myself at least, as a kid I spoke pretty much RP, but I'd say I pronounce consonants about half as much now as I did back then.

Depending on where he studied in the UK, in some regions the /th/ sound is pronounced closer to a /t/ sound - e.g. Northern Ireland, and my relatives in Wales also pronounce it like this

He has a English twang, but he misses words out and he has a Chinese accent but that takes nothing away from his English, it’s similar to a Chinese boy I went to school with, he came in junior school, but he still had of this same way of speaking as this boy. If you close you’re eyes you know he’s not British. There are 40 different dialects in Britain it’s crazy I struggle to understand other English speakers 1 and half hours drive away sometimes 😂

Chris mate you have great content as usual. My only slight issue with this, is a common one that UK people confuse and that is the term “British Accent”.There isn’t a specific “British Accent”. When you say British accent you’re referring to the RP (Received Pronunciation) accent like a news reader or the queen. I’m pretty sure you are not referring to an accent like the 2 Scottish people in the video.

Very true! In Chinese most people say 英音 as well to refer to the “British sound,” but like you mentioned, they tend to mean RP, which then I also always need to further differentiate from the super posh queen’s English. I’ll make a note of that for future vids! Thanks!

@@LaomaChris There really isn't a 'standard British accent' Look up Glasgow(Glaswegian), Liverpool(Scouse), Birmingham(Brummie) accents! Here you can pretty much travel 50 miles in any direction and the accent noticably changes. Peace.

Chris is FAKING it again. The "r" in "personality" is a vowel sound of r, in this case "er" n the "e" which is actually IPA number 12, the cursy E written backward, which can be made without "r-coloring" or with "r-coloring". The non r-coloring r has the tip of the tongue keep touching the back of the lower front teeth while the middle of the tongue is arching half way to the hard palate. The resulting vowel sound has quality like the consonant r but it is NOT a r-sound. IPA number 12 always (except for the word "colonel" as in a military officer)has a r next to it n that's where the confusion comes it. In the UK, IPA number 12 is always without r-coloring. The r-coloring of "er' has the tip of the tongue tensed up n curved over,( not touching the back of the bottom front teeth) n the body of the tongue retracts backward. This way, this r-coloring IPA number 12 sounds very tense n really like the consonant r which has an entirely way to produce. Chris himself, barely r-color this "er"--without audible tensing up. Anyway, not many people r-color the "er" anymore in present day USA.
