In 1984, Ethiopia was in the midst of a drought that killed as many as a million people. These artists as well as the Band Aid and Live Aid performers were raising money for famine relief.

The Brits had Do They Know it's Christmas Time. in 84. In 85, The Americans said after The Grammy Awards, hold my beer.

Stevie Wonder made the “offer” that he and Ray Charles would be driving everyone home if the group didn’t get the vocals done in one take. Well, it didn’t get done in one take, but Stevie and Ray kindly decided to be lenient on the offer. They did get all the vocals done by 8 AM the next morning, so it was less than 12 hours after everyone got in position to start. While it wasn’t one take, less than a day is very impressive for something this ambitious.

This was inspired by Bob Geldof who put together Live Aid and the single Do they Know its Christmas.

This was just amazing. It was choreographed wonderfully. There were some snags but it turned out beautiful. All these amazing performers coming together in one place. Doubt this could ever be done again.

If I remember correctly (though I was still a kid when this came out), this was primarily in response to famine conditions in ... Ethiopia I think? And the other affected areas in the region? Not 100% sure without googling it, though.

hope you will listen to each of these incredible artists.

Thank you!! Someone who finally acknowledges the great Tina Turner. Still hard to believe at times that she's no longer with us. The brow raise when Springsteen stepped to the mic...mmhmmm. Ok sir. I see you. 😜

Tina Turner’s fame and career were still so actively on the rise when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, I was kind of mindblown when my parents told very young me that she was already pretty famous for quite a while before I was born. By the time I came about, she had already made almost 30 (studio and live) albums, and almost 80 singles, and her solo career was just getting going. I didn’t know a world without Tina Turner living in it until just this past year.

Credits are in Wikipedia. All-stars 🌟 Bob Geldof asked David Foster to form a supergroup in Canada 🇨🇦. He organized one while Bruce Allen (manager of him, Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance, BTO, Loverboy, Prism, Payola$) handled the business side. Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, Geddy Lee of Rush, the late Gordon Lightfoot, RIP, Joni Mitchell, Anne Murray, Mike Reno of Loverboy, Neil Young are some of the singers. The supergroup was named Northern Lights. Suggested video 📹: Northern Lights perform Tears Are Not Enough.

It is crazy to me that Harry Belafonte and the Great Smokey Robinson were only in the chorus!
