In this video, I talk about what retinoids are, how they work, the side effects of retinoids, how best to use retinoids, and my retinoid product recommendations. Whether it's retinoids, retinols, retinals - it seems like everywhere you look, these ingredients are being discussed in the world of skincare. I think it's time you got a full explanation of the topic!

Hi Doc, thanks for the video! Now I got a bit confuded, what is stronger Adaptalene 0,1% or tretinoin 1 mg/kg? I am using since 3 months tretinoin 0,5 mg/g and would like to update to a stronger retinoid. Here in the Netherlands we have no right of going to a dermatologist for aestetic reasons. Only for real patologies. Therefore unfortunally I keep looking for information online.

@@hellohello7142Tretinoin is stronger than Adapalene. Getting higher dose than tretinoin is not always necessary, putting moisturizer after instead of before might help skin absorb the tretinoin better. You might want to consider adding Vit C during the day, Hyaluronic acid/snail mucin & peptides…

My dad is a dermatologist. He explain it simply retinoid "burns" your outer skin until it peels of so the new, younger skin cells can grow and replace your old outer skin. So it's natural to feel discomfort at early stage of the medication. And it's gonna be worth all the pain. No pain no gain, baby

Quite interesting, I was using retinoids in pills for quite a long time (prescribed) and they (obviously) were working in a different way. They were kinda sucking wet/fat out of my skin/pores therefore removing oiliness of skin. I am curious why retinols should work in a different way? I though they’re the same thing, but gentler.

@@abd12459 try first using a gentle cleanser and then let your skin dry for more than 20mins cuz before this duration ,applying tretinoin can irritat your skin Apply tretinoin, you need just a bit And then sleeps or do whatever you want and then wash your face gently and let you face dry for 20mins and then apply your moisture cuz before this duration it's gonna affect the tretinoin efficiency.

I’ve worked in Dermatology for 25 years and this is hands down the best explanation for 1. Why you should use it- the benefits 2. The side effects 3. The method 4. The products. The only thing I would add-never apply a retinol or Retin A product on your face when your skin is moist from cleansing. Wait at least 10 minutes. This will reduce irritation considerably.

The first dermatologist that put me on Tretinoin had it high and to often. I stopped using it fairly quickly. Then switched to another highly recommended Dermatologist near me who listened to why I did not want it and took the time to explain like you do in your video. This dermatologist started me on a lower dosage only twice a week and slowly brought the amount per week up. I just turned 60 y/o this year and easily pass for my early 40's. I personally didn't notice any difference until one day around 6 months I suddenly realized I had great facial skin. I do my face, neck, entire chest, and both hands.

I'm a Sunday Riley 'Luna' and A+ retinol user too and I love it. I love the Luna oil the best as it's gentle start and then you add the A+ as your skin gets used to it. I also recommend Good genes which is Glycolic acid in the morning (or Lactic Acid in the States I think). Another great retinol oil to try is Medik 8. They have different strengths so start low and build as your skin adjusts. I'm heading a few years towards 50 so since turned 40 have been obsessed with trying 'lux' skin care samples etc (I'm on a budget 😊). Most of the luxury skin care stuff is marketing and just BS talk. However, it's about the whole ritual self care routine then sometimes it's nice to have a particular treat. But don't expect miracles. Genes, what you eat, drinking alcohol, Sun and lifestyle are a massive part of how your skin looks as you age. Apologies for the waffle. Retinol has been the game changer for me as it has for many people. And yes, Sunday Riley is such a lovely brand ❤️

I just found your channel. Wow, was it a breath of fresh air. I just watched a video of a couple people (a scientist and dermatologist) making the argument of the cons (especially thinning of the skin) of using retina A. I have been a tretinoin user for at least 20 years. My skin looks better now than it did in my 40's. No freckling, no wrinkle lines and I am 66. I do use other ingredients but were long started after the tretinoin. I'm sure I am using products in the morning that are not necessary, but the skincare world makes you feel as though it is. If there is no proof the other products really help, I'd love to know if you have other videos to refer to. I use VC, Matrixyl 3000, COQ10, HA, a couple others, but not all at the same time and all in the morning. And of course, sunscreen every day! Thanks for easing my mind with this video. I would recommend Retinoid or tretinoin to everyone if tolerated. It has been the Big Gun for me.

I started using Tretinoin a couple of months back because none of the more expensive skin care seem to work as described on the packaging. I did go through the ugly peeling phase, with extreme dryness on my skin (my natural skin type: Oily acne prone). I had watched Dr Dray mention the timeline for Retinoic Acids to work Or start showing desirable results (roughly 6weeks plus minus depending on usage). And yes after 6 weeks, my skin stopped peeling and it became really radiant and smooth. My previously 'started to form" fine lines had disappeared (im 26). I swear this is the only additional product you need in your skin care, on top of cleanser and moisturiser. I recommend trying if you can get your hands on Retinoic Acids.

I have been using prescription Tretinoin .05% for at least a decade now. I never experienced excessive reddness or irritation with the product. What works for me is, in the morning, I wash my face with regular soap and rub off the peeling skin. Then I just use Lubriderm and Walgreen's zinc 50 spf sunscreen (Cheap, don't need fancy ones). My skin is totally flawless. I had horrible acne in my teens and was taking Tetracycline and Keflex to keep it clear. Now even strangers will compliment me on my skin...it's amazing.

I'm using tret, which is a stronger version of retinoid. You can get this without a prescription in Catalonia, Spain but not in the other parts of Spain. I tried it for a first time 7-8 months ago, it was a disaster! I was peeling, feeling red, dry, like I had a allergy....all the bad things and I gave up eventually. Two months later I started it again, but this time I was prepared about the side effects and I started it with a clear schedule - the first month I applied it every third night, the second month - every other night, on the third month every night. I'm now in the second month and haven't experienced such bad side effects, it's bearable 😊 Still, I haven't seen any improvements of the skin, some days I feel like even my skin looks worse, but I'm patient enough to wait and see in a couple of months or even half a year before judging.

So here’s a question, retinoids which are supposed slough off the top layers of skin, and supposed to prevent the top layer of skin from being keratinized thereby remaining plump longer than it usually would, this combination effect can leave your skin rather exposed to UV radiation more than a skin that has keratin/melanin, and all this in combination causes cell proliferation, thereby preventing cells from living to long, thereby preventing cancer , all this happens in short term, but wouldn’t the same effects make your skin more susceptible to thinning, and aging? Because we are born with a set number of cell divisions per cell, as we know telomeres have set length. Wouldn’t sloughing off cells to look younger in short term, cause a thinner skin when you’re older, thereby increasing your chances of getting skin cancer more than what it would have? Also what are epigenetic effects of retinoids? If it can affect development of a fetus, can it also effect sperm/egg development? May be not in your life time, what about my kids, kids? Or do we discount those effects/side effects as too late in life for needing attention?? And I only ask this, because humans are starting to live much longer than any of our previous generations, does keeping the top layer of skin not important? Your thoughts? Thank you..
