Wow. That's a very significant difference! I have a similar issue with my OP-Z and my modular *IF* the computer (USB MIDI) and audio interface are connected simultaneously. On their own, just audio out into the audio interface, everything is normal. One huge benefit of old school 5-pin DIN MIDI: It has isolation built in, so I've been using that as an option when possible. I'll give this gadget a try though, as it would be far more convenient to use USB MIDI.

The funny thing is that it costs pennies to put isolation circuits in USB ports/cables but a lot of companies don’t do it and you end up with this interference.🙄

@@DarrenLockMusic So I managed to find an IFI Defender+ on B&H, and unfortunately it doesn't kill the noise completely. It does lessen it, but not to the degree where listening is comfortable. I am looking into other solutions pertaining to my PC itself as to ground it on a component level, but other than that there isn't a whole lot I can do. Hopefully once I figure that out maybe the Defender+ will have a more significant effect.

It could be interference on your electricity supply. You might want to try your setup somewhere else and see if that has any effect on the interference.

I have a similar problem when I play videogames on my pc. It makes a deep hum through my audio interface. Somehow I found that lowering my pc internal volume(at around 10) and increasing my audio interface volume(turning the volume knob at 3 o'clock) gets rid of that hum. It might work for somebody else.

I have a very similar problem, however I am using a focusrite scarlett 8i6 which draws its power directly from the electricity socket in the wall. Theoretically there shouldn't be any usb interference since it's sending only basic data back and forth. On the other hand when I'm using the interface with a laptop instead of a desktop I get less noise while the rest of the setup is the same. I think I might be missing something.
@DarrenLockMusic
@DarrenLockMusic 4 жыл бұрын
The funny thing is that the circuit that prevents USB hum or interference costs pennies and is easy to add to any audio interface, but for some reason some items are missing it and don't play friendly with certain configurations.
@soulslip
@soulslip 2 жыл бұрын
But you are creating the loop by having two different power sources connected via usb which then creates the loop showing in the mains. Laptops have known issues as well and it is not uncommon for a laptop to have less noise although a lot of power bricks from laptops will cause massive loops hum while plugged in. It is unfortunately with the usb itself, differential circuits (more than one powered unit cross connected) and the cpu itself which are poorly shielded from frequency interference.... i would say using an isolation transformer, using a common or single power strip, as well as a multi-unbalanced to balanced conversion box would be the best way to go.
@victorb9503
@victorb9503 2 жыл бұрын
@@soulslip I figured it out way later when I bought an amp and cabinet. My desktop pc emits a very powerful electro magnetic field which adds a lot of noise. If I play my guitar through the amp and stay close to the pc it adds the same static even though it is not in the loop. The laptop does that too but very little in comparison.

thanks for this great tip my setup: 1. Scarlett 2i2 Digital Audio Interface plugged into USB-A (Dell XPS 15 laptop) 2. NUX NPK-10 Digital Piano send/receive MIDI over USB-B to USB-A (Dell XPS 15 laptop) 3. NUX NPK-10 Digital Piano line out L + line out R over 2x TS mono unbalanced cables to two inputs of Scarlett 2i2 Digital Audio Interface my issues: 1. ground loop hum / hiss when pre amp gains are over 50% and the monitoring headphones are over 50% level (that is truly annoying) I can reduce the gains and/or monitoring headphones level so that I can no longer hear the hum, but is that a solution? when I amplify the relatively low signal in Digital Audio Workstation, the hum is amplified and noticeable anyway. 2. when I plug in the USB-B (piano) to USB-A (laptop) to record MIDI, that MIDI transmission generates ridiculous noise, which follows the played notes rhythm, which means as MIDI is sending / receiving, the horrible square waveform noises are overlapping the audio signal, AND recorded as audio as well. when I record just Audio, without the MIDI notes, the recording quality is "acceptable" IF NOT the hum described above in (1) however I WANT to record BOTH Audio and MIDI tracks, so that I can modify the MIDI notes if needed, quantise them etc. then I can send corrected MIDI back to the piano and ask it to play back Audio for me, so I can record it again. QUESTIONS: 1. will this USB isolator fix the MIDI interference to the Audio recording? 2. will the USB isolator fix the ground loop hum both in the monitoring and recording? 3. do I need TWO USB Isolators, both for my Scarlett Digital Audio Interface connection USB-C to USB-A, and for the Digital Piano USB MIDI cable?

Honestly, I have no idea. But if a certain piece of equipment introduces interference then you either need to replace it or try one of these filters. However, the filters might not work if the interference is actually caused by a poor electrical supply or something else you haven’t considered. This is why it is a good idea to try your setup in a different location to try and replicate the problem or try your gear on a different computer.

If the USB interface makes a noise without the microphone or with another instrument, then it could be a ground loop issue. However, if it is just your microphone it could be that the hum is caused by your electrical loop and you might need more shielding on it.

Thanks, quick questions. I have the exact same problem with all of my usb-driven instruments (I am using a Nord Piano and a Korg Minilogue, in combination with a Arturia Midi Controller). When I plug any of them into my desktop (regardless of cable and slot, both the PC itself and the powered USB-hub), I have a rather similar sound to what you just showed. Would this isolator do the job if I use it AFTER the hub (so between hub and PC) or should I use it before the hub (so between instrument and hub)? I have been dealing with this issue for a couple years and was at my end of it, nearly ready to part off my pc and start over with new components in the hopes of correcting this loud horrible hiss and whine. I obviously have known of this product and could not bring myself to drop the expense of such a tiny simplistic device. Then the Covids hit and shut down the likelihood of obtaining practically anything to complete an all new pc build so I bit the bullett (the Rye kind spelling correct lol) and dropped $50 for a Hail Marry attempt and I'll be , it works wonderfully. As of this writing it's been only five minutes since but had to let folks know, a real world person bought it and wow - total silence no noise at all, crystal clear voice through the mic and all other audio is perfect. Now the best part of all, No setup files to download, No playing around trying different usb ports, I used the one that my DAC plugs into not sure if it mattered but seemed logical. Just plug and play noiseless audio joy, trying to be less hard headed!!!!! If wondering I bought on Amazon with the dang additional $50 power supply and don't even care that I payed way too much, totally worth it friends.

@@DarrenLockMusic yes thanks. I've been at this problem all day for the last few days and it seems to be either noise from the preamp. Apparently they make some amount of noise which you can hear with high gain. Or it's a usb ground loop issue. I tried plugging my interface into my laptop. If I remove the laptops power cord there's ground loop noise. If I also remove the phantom power from the interface there's no ground loop noise. You just got a new subscriber mate! I've been using an Xtuga E22 interface and for some reason whenever i try to use VSTs on my DAW. I get a sharp whining hum that doesn't go away. Amp plugins only amplify the hum to the extent that it is almost unbearable to even record. Tried disconnecting everything leaving just the interface connected to my pc by a usb cable and I can still hear the noise. Would this be a looping issue? I got all my usb ports plugged in with a number of devices including a usb hub. Got some led strips as well. What would be the main cause of this?
@DarrenLockMusic
@DarrenLockMusic 3 жыл бұрын
I would immediately think it could be interference from the LED lights.

There's a number of solutions, depending on the cause... Example - in certain laptops (Dell latitude series are pretty bad)... If you've running it on batteries, not a worry. Sounds fine. If you're using it on an external power supply, with no battery in - again no issues. However, the moment you run the power supply AND the battery is also in... As the charging management circuits go working away... Awful!

seriously, though- I have a few usb powered instruments that pull too much current for a gadget like this, & so I have to deal with the earth loops by altering the audio cabling (i.e. lifting the ground there) instead of in the power supply.

My studio monitors are connected to a DAC that uses 2USB's, one 5V to USB to power the DAC to my PC, and one USB to get the info (data, however you wanna call it), so it makes noises........ I bought the "iFi iPower Low Noise DC Power Supply 5V" to power the DAC , instead of that shitty cable , which should solve the power thingy, and now I ordered this Hifime USB for the data, hope it's gonna be solved. Thanks for the video btw :D

I have an issue where my audio sounds great then every 15 mins it goes distorted for about 8 seconds then goes back to being fine,I've got my laptop running through my usb mixer,Im not willing to spend £30 with out no guarantee it does work,
@DarrenLockMusic
@DarrenLockMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that doesn’t sound like a grounding issue as the noise would be continual. You might want to replace the mixer or the laptop soon...

This is great but why don't you better show what you're doing? You took the time to make a video, yet show just your face basically. Just seems pointless to not show exactly what you're doing. You could of just wrote a review on the isolator and there'd be little difference.

@@DarrenLockMusic I was just saying that the main advantage of video in general is the ability to SEE exactly what is happening. Why not take advantage and show more? It provides more information without even saying anything. Technically speaking, you could have made a video without saying a single word that would in a sense be more descriptive. Ya know, a picture is worth 1000 words? A video's worth a million? Well, 1.8million to some folks. I'm not meaning to pick on you or anything. It seems to be more common than you'd think. People providing a video while just talking when they could be showing as more by simply turning a camera.
