@dougdobbs2 ай бұрын
As I approach the door I scan the room before I enter it. Are people looking normal? Or is everyone frozen in place, all looking the same direction, perhaps with expressions of panic or fear on their faces? Do not go in, hit 911. I think of it like walking through a forest. If the birds are twittering and the animals scurrying normally, that's a good sign. When the forest goes REAL quiet all of a sudden, that may be a bad sign. So observe the wildlife. :) Once people look relaxed, I do pretty much what you suggest in terms of scanning the room, evaluating other patrons, looking for bottlenecks or cul de sacs. If it's busy and I can't get the seat I want with my back to the wall near an exit, I'll try to sit near an empty table. Winging an empty chair down an aisle could be a useful distraction or block a charging foe. I also try to sit where I can keep an eye on my car in the parking lot, if at all possible. As when entering, when exiting, eyes up and out on the parking lot, looking for potential threats or problems. I usually try to park as far from the door as possible so there's less chance of someone being in a car parked right next to me. If there's a van parked right next to me, especially if I'm a ways from the building and no other cars around, I may go for a walk and make sure there's no one inside. Especially if it's parked with the big side door next to my driver's door, or, if I have a passenger, next to their door. That will require a -good- bit of recon before I'll approach. I tend to avoid drive-throughs because your vehicle may be boxed in by curbs or obstacles. No bueno.

Remember to talk to your family members in advance - when it is time to move, LISTEN - MOVE, don't ask why just act. Many people are not used to listening, they generally ask why because they aren't used to listening and reacting to instructions. I discuss it with my wife now and then for a refresher (she is much more alert in parking lot situations now than she used to be) but I am still not sure she won't go into FREEZE MODE in an active situation. HE WHO HESITATES in a critical situation is lost as is anyone trying to get a loved one to move.
@Roqjoru18 күн бұрын
In helping your wife make sure she has something light, carry system, that is enjoyable like a H&K VP9. Have fun researching and doing ballistic vids on ammo. Consider joining gun club and participating in IPSC and like competitions for fun and learning. Even "losing is learning". I realized I was worrying about my wife. I had already trained, she worked on the "feel" of her trigger finger and grip for one year. She went to a class and was worried as she had a .357. She met her time to her surprise in the 10 ring. She was really excited... grip is vital.. as she is 5'10" with pretty big wide hand & slender fingers, the VP9 sloved it. She is my partner and we work together. If engaged I need someone to call 911.

Please do another video with your thoughts about awareness and defense while in a drive-thru line. Most people I've observed pull forward way too close to the car ahead. That removes the option to simply turn the wheel and escape. You have to put your car close enough to the windows to pay and be served, meaning there is absolutely no option to escape through the driver's door if that was appropriate.

@@DavidSmith_W6DPS ....it bothers me that my favorite has only one entrance and the kitchen exit option is only accessible directly through the cash register counter. If these incidents start up here I will have to reconsider how I use the place. The gun to the head asking for money scenario is very subjective. A proponent of gun control would say the same thing: just give the perp the money. If someone has a gun to your head, your life is in imminent danger. Lethal force is obviously justified. No guarantees whatsoever you’re walking away from that engagement- even after the perp gets his money. I agree with all of the situational awareness advice. But assuming your life is safe simply because the perp is asking for money is a mistake. People will argue about odds and results in similar scenarios. According to a study that Tom Grieve once mentioned, those that fight back in life-threatening scenarios have a greater chance of survival versus those that choose to obey. Just some food for thought. Hopefully, the majority of us will never experience such a scenario.

A young lady was shot and killed by a man behind her in a Taco Bell drive thru in Ohio a few months ago. He was waiving his arms wildly and yelling before he approached her car and shot her. The drive-through cashier called 911 and the young lady was also talking to her father and telling him she was scared and the dad heard everything including her screams and the shot. The coward returned to his car and took his own life. Would a total heartbreak and what an evil person to do this to her. It just shows you that even in the most every day routine places like drive-through, we have to keep our head on a swivel. Rest in peace, young lady.

When I was a pilot, it was part of the culture for us to study and scrutinize mishaps, crashes and NTSB reports. It was an expected part of the responsibility. When I was a volunteer EMT we did continuous training, both for common scenarios and unlikely scenarios such as chemical explosions and mass shootings. It was an expected part of the responsibility. Owning and carrying a gun is both a protected right and a responsibility. The fact that you think we shouldn't train and prepare for the worst just proves you are not used to thinking like a responsible person, probably because you don't have many critical responsibilities. When I flew, I thought about contingencies. When I was a First Responder, I thought about contingencies. Obviously I didn't perform my duties with a sense of doom or paranoia. When I carry, I think about contingencies. Want to know my primary concern? Innocent bystanders. What I think about most is the shot I absolutely cannot take. You walk around like livestock and expect everything to work out so you don't understand yet. If you had critical responsibilities, you would quickly understand. You think people who disagree with your worldview are stupid animals and that is: A: why we have guns and carry them. B: why the Bill of Rights contains the 2nd Amendment C: an indication of your ignorance and paranoia and not ours
