This testimony is a psychiatrist dream on surpressed reality in childhood. It is also very interesting because it is very honest. I thank Irene and the Shoah Foundatinon. Köszönöm Irén!

The Holocaust disrupted every Jewish life in Europe. If you were still alive in 1945 for whatever reason, then you are a survivor of the Holocaust. Irene's story is a testament to survival. Mistakes were made by her parents, but they did whatever they could so that their child would survive. You can tell by Irene's emotions that those childhood years spent in hiding and in denying her true identity had a lasting effect on her life. She is a compassionate and very intelligent woman.

She says her father was meek and not courageous but it sounds like he was, he took a chance, now I think thats pretty brave. I couldn’t imagine having to be around my mother’s lover, I mean we do what we have to do but that would have caused a lot of anger in me ecspecially as a child. She’s clearly a lovely lady and I’m greatful she shared her story. The devastation is so real, i pray she has been able to find peace.

Like many others, this honest testimony is full of dilemmas - impossible situations and impossible choices. Maybe that feeling of anger would be wiped out or reduced - suppressed - by the prevalent feeling of very real fear for their lives, of being discovered. Impossible or hard to say how we would respond in such extreme situations.

I can't imagine the effect of having to hide with her mother and her mother's lover while her father was in a work camp and then to live in the same rooms with her mother, mother's lover and her father. That does so much more to child thans just going into hiding.

I feel so very sad that this woman did not get help for all her fears. She may have been seeking it while she looked for a religion that suited her. I think if she had found a good therapist who worked with Holocaust Survivors she would have maybe had a better understanding and be able to release some of the fears.
