People are too obsessed with drawing pretty and boring stuff. Go out of your comfort zone. Draw old people with a lot of expression. Draw some guy with a half burned face, anything! Get out of your comfort zone. I get that it's natural for us humans to lean towards drawing pretty and sexy people but there's more out there that exists then just lame 0 expression Pinterest models. Not practicing drawing something like a 47 year old guy that's yelling and other expressive more humanized non edited examples can hold you back in the future.

Totally agree with the fact that these references are boring to DRAW. But... I’ve found that they’re great painting references. They have been useful for me in learning how to mix my colors and paint skin tones. The lighting is always good, the hair and make up colors can freshen up my palette, and there can be some fun design elements to try out. I don’t think I would ever post my studies of these models to Instagram, since I don’t want to go through the effort of giving image credit 😂

You just helped me take my drawings on the next level. Because I was so frustrated and stuck in a rut. When you said it, it became so clear to me: expression. That's what I want. I think it's the eyes, when you're genuinely expressing emotion your eyes get wider or more closed & when someone's making a face without emotion behind it (like for a hot girl Instagram picture) their eyes stay open a 'normal' amount or an amount that doesn't match the expression... (when you're a socially anxious person you tend to key into very minor changes in people's faces to read them)

I found it really helpful to also draw older people too. They can be just as expressive. They can feel really sincere in a very inspiring way. The aging in a face can be really revealing when it comes to how the skin moves. It reveals a lot of shapes you may not ordinarily notice.

The only thing I would add is that it can also help to know what you want to use a reference for. Expressiveness is a very good point but there are also many expressionless pictures on pinterest that might be interesting in other aspects like light & shadow, unique facial features etc. So I would say it's best to be mindful and aware of "why" you would choose a particular reference! :)

10:39 re: models/photographers that don't like artists using their artwork for a reference. Unless it's photorealism, without anything remotely transformative (tracing etc.), boo hoo if they don't like it (so long as it is truly transformative they have no claim.) I've done both for a long while, people can get ridiculous as to how far they think their photo shoots are an original. If you act as if you have a patent on the model, their expression and pose, lighting, and "style," it better be ground-breakingly original.

Man, that app you are using at the start is what I need! I’ve been looking for an app like Pureref but for iPad. Hopefully they release that soon :)

Most of the time I only search for references when I already know what I want to draw, like most of the time that I draw or drew is because I want to express an idea from my head so I just get a reference to solidify the ideia. If i start with the reference is mostly for training or lazyness.

I'll keep these in mind but I think I need to stick with the static and vapid expressions for now (cuz i'm working on my skills rn)

But so don't know if it's a good idea I went for the same approach but you should start learning now. I can draw faces but I can't draw expressions so I have to learn again. You should do it at the same time

@@anonymoususer9197 That does seem like a pretty cool idea, and I might do that, but for now I'd just like to become a little more confident in my abilities and actually figure out what faces look like.

@@genericangst8665 I mean I can't tell you what to do and how and you should figure it out but what I realized is that learning how for example muscles move and how the face stretches helps you understand faces more but you can learn that first. For example I started with colors since that is a field I wanna work in so anatomy wasn't really a focus for me. But if you say you wanna find a style first I get you should experiment before starting with all the anantomy stuff.

This whole time I've never knew you could create sub categories within Pinterest. I'm not even an artist and I don't know why I'm here, but I'm glad I learned this???

You can also look for 3D models, sculptures and things like that, they can have mad detail, and you can learn alot from just drawing, painting or sculpting those.

I love to look of emptyness, lost, and mystery so I find my self drawing plan faces and structure but with a layer of darkness with color or other things. The hair is aways slik almost robotic like. And they eyes are the windows the eye catcher. So you can say am a victim of these basic pictures but only the ones that fit my style.
