I’m not sure if you are still commenting on this video. It’s almost 6 years old. But here goes... I big chopped in May of 2018 and wasn’t happy with my growth. So in June I had box braids installed which was awful. Too tight/the braids were too big & the hair was too heavy. I had pain for weeks. I know, I know, I should have taken them out!! September I found out about crochet braids and haven’t looked back. I had them installed in September and October and decided to learn how to do them myself. My first attempt was actually not bad at all. My question for you is.. what are your thoughts on crochet braids? Are they healthy for the hair seeing that a metal hook is being used? What about the hair being installed on the actual hair? I’d love any input because it occurred to me that this protective style may not be so protective after all! Thanks so much! I love your videos!!

I Thank You SOOOOO much this information you gave in this video and the real protein treatment, how braids should feel ,and what to look out for has saved my hair. My hair was breaking off so much after I had gotten my hair braided fro an African shop...Not saying all African shops is like this one but braids was to tight and seems like they were ripping out my hair while braiding this happen at the beginning of the year around Feb. since then I had to cut my hair short 2x ,but it was still breaking off. I was deep conditioning it wearing loose styles no heat everything still won't stop breaking off. BUT when I came across this video in late July I order the real protein treatment and WOW... I tell no lies it has changed my hair and growth it is now Oct and I have fallen back in love with my hair... adding the real protein treatment to my deep conditioners is amazing for my hair. I haven't had breakage, lots of hair growth, and my hair is thinker. I kept combing my hair because not to see hair in my comb for me is unusually. My hair is so healthy I am so amazed because I tried so many things and I didn't think this would work....BUT it does I thank you again for sharing this info it saved my hair

I want to get my hair braided again, it has been years 5 or 6 years since because of what you said you tell them not to braid tight but they eventually start braiding tight again, I think the braiders should know what braiding tightly does to your scalp and hair, 6 weeks schooling or something

Dear Greenbeauty, I use braids also as a protective style. Yesterday I went for the first time after quarantine to get my hair braided. It seems like everything you said in video was opposite to what was done with my hair. I blow out my hair 2 days before so so it will be easier for combing. -She comb my hair with a small comb. - after done she used a scissors to neatly cut the hair. - then she boiled water and I believe that most of my hair got in hot water. -thank God my hair is not done tight. I know I was not assertive enough to talk about my hair safety before. I know if I notice damage or anything I will have to adress it next time or practice braiding my own hair better. I believe hot water can damage the hair follicles. Please let me know!! Thank you for all advice about type 4 hair they are very good information.

You need to speak up or kiss your hair goodbye. It is YOUR hair and in the end, you will have to deal with the consequences not them. I learned to braid my own hair from KZbin videos and I am so glad. A ‘stylist’ who doesn’t give a damn about my hair’s health will never touch my hair again. Speak up OR learn to braid your hair yourself OR deal with the consequences of not speaking up. Trust me you’ll be mad at yourself for not looking out for yourself.

Wonderful video. I am a 65 years old female that took time back in the SIXTY's to braid my natural hair in braids as small as I could get them. I took a walk down the streets of New York City and did not make it ONE block before people were either laughing or asking where I was from. Some said here comes Buckwheat. Then Bo Derek got on TV with these braids and Black people who called this style a Buckwheat style bought fake hair from a Asian store (chuckling) in order to look like "Bo Derek". I gave my associates the same advice about even braiding their natural hair too tight. I'm not seeing many videos about the care of braids that are not fake hair. I recently braided my hair for the first time in almost 44 years and I plan to keep them in for a very long time with proper care. If you get time, please post a video on the care of natural hair with no weave. Trust me, my kids and nieces dragged me into the 21st Century of technology kicking and screaming. I didn't want to even use a computer let alone know how to post a video. Bless You for taking time to inform women and men of how to care for weaved hair.

Wow that's really informative. I Uninstall my braids to let my hair n scalp breath. I can't take when someone make my hair so tide cuz I get a headache of that. As I had to use the braids to grow my hair and shop the relaxed hair I have decided to leave my hair that way so it can grow without the braids, not to mention that I had to wash my hair with it and use oil in my scalp for the reason that I have itchy scalp.

Just got my twists last week......GROWL....didn't tell them to twist loosely and I did not do a protein treatment, however I did do a DC. So I'm crossing my fingers that my hair will be okay. I'm nervous.... Looking forward to the other videos for instruction though.

Also weight of braid hair extensions also contribute to traction alopecia. However I'm starting to see more braid shops use lighter extension hair.

The animation makes the video fun to watch! How often can you do the Protein treatment. For ex: I'm getting braids and plan on keeping them in for a month. I will let my hair breath for a week and then get my hair braided again. Can I do a protein treatment before each set of braids? That would be once a month. Thanks for all the information!

Yes, that is a great plan for keeping your hair protected and strong so breakage is minimal. Just make sure you provide your hair/braids with tons of moisture while they are in. B/c the fabric of the added hair sucks up a lot of moisture from your hair.
