I have recently found your videos while starting duolingo. And while duolingo helps soo much with vocabulary i find your videos so helpful with explaining cultural nuances. Thank u!

try not to use duolingo after a while. its very bad because it doesn’t give good context. Use it for basic vocab but go to tv shows, italki, and better apps! best of luck

Came back here for a refresher. I'm currently studying Japanese, and they have the term "んだ/んです" (n da/n des), which works extremely similar to "es que" and directly translates as well 😁

Hey Ryan! I didn't know that, but it fits my perception of Japanese politeness/culture - bet it's an interesting language to learn! Japan's actually at the top of our bucket list... I should probably try to learn a few phrases myself before we go :)

This is so helpful to get the feel of what this means in conversation. I’m finally learning to relax and just say things like how they are said by native speakers and not worry so much about translation. Also translations aren’t always very helpful as there are many ways to say the same thing in English.

Hey Erin! Sounds like you're on the right track; not translating in your head is always a sign of massive improvement 😊 Totally agree that translations aren't always helpful!

This phrase doesn't seem too difficult. But I actually have a question about the English translation at 7:54. "By miles" is an expression in American English, but is it common in the UK since they don't use miles?🤔
@spanishunraveled

Hey! We do in fact use miles in the UK; I'd say 'by miles' is a common expression 😊

I like that the ''es que'' does not require the dreaded subjunctive after! Every time I see ''que'' , I second-guess myself and think 'should I use subjunctive.... lol... Now, question regarding the ''disculpa + verb''... could you give one example so that it can be a bit clearer? Would ''Disculpa, no terminé mi trabajo'' be correct? What about this other example: Disculpa que no terminé mi trabajo? This last one sounds wrong. And this other example: Discupla, pero no tenía tiempo para terminar mi trabajo. I have a bit of a hard time adding a verb after ´´disculpa´´ without first adding a ´´pero´´ or ´´que´´....
@spanishunraveled
@spanishunraveled 8 ай бұрын
Hey :) You could say something like "Disculpa, tuve un accidente y no pude llegar" or "Disculpa, no me he sentido bien estos días". "Disculpa que no terminé mi trabajo" would also be correct 🙌

I always say that if you want to see terror in the eyes of a new student of Spanish, just mention the subjuncive mood! 😀 Having 'studied' Spanish for some time, here's my tuppence worth - It is tue that 'que' usually triggers the subjunctive, but only when it introduces (I think) a subordinate/secondary clause with a change in the subject, Eg ' Prefiero que/(tú) no me hables así ' - not as part of a phrase, eg '(Es que) necessito irme ahora mismo'. I'd appreciate anyone's confirmation/correction on this.
