Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is nothing at all. That’s how I like to look at intermittent fasting.
Embracing planned periods without eating has numerous well-researched benefits for our health and longevity. And it’s not just about weight (though that is one benefit); it’s also about cellular clean-up, which reduces the risk of chronic disease and increases our healthspan in the process.
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Jason Fung about using intermittent fasting as a tool for optimal health and why dietary advice based on the energy-balance model has only made the obesity epidemic worse.
Dr. Jason Fung is a physician, author, and researcher. His groundbreaking science-based books about diabetes and obesity, The Diabetes Code, The Obesity Code, and The Complete Guide to Fasting have sold over one million copies and challenged the conventional wisdom that diabetics should be treated with insulin. Dr. Fung is also the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes naturally with fasting. His work on fasting has been cited by CNN, Time, The Atlantic, Forbes, The Toronto Star, and many other media outlets. His latest book is The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery.
In this episode, we dive into:
What role fasting plays when it comes to optimal health and longevity (0:46)
Why autophagy is so important for health and longevity (1:59)
The most important thing for turning on and off autophagy (5:42)
Why we age and common things that contribute to it (8:52)
How calorie restriction increases longevity (18:47)
Calorie restriction vs. fasting (22:25)
The calorie debate (26:20)
Understanding calorie deficit, weight loss, and the energy-balance model (34:17)
The problem with the “calories in, calories out” model of weight management (42:15)
How Dr. Fung incorporates fasting into his life (48:03)
Three key things to focus on for successful behavior change (51:23)

This man knows what he is talking about. Intermittent fasting is incredible. I don't eat until 6-8hrs after I wake up every day; the only thing I consume during this window is black coffee. I am ruthless with limiting carbohydrate intake during meals and mainly only eat meat and vegetables. I look and feel good every day.

Great interview! Hi Dr. Fung!! I've learned more from Dr. Fung's books and videos than from any of my face to face doctors. He's easy to understand, honest and believable because he backs it up with science and studies. I'm 58. I've lost 115lbs. so far since November 😲! I'm off my blood pressure meds, my osteoarthritis pain is so much better I'm able to be active again and swimming and my asthma is...gone! I eat one meal a day and do intermittent fasting. I feel so well! Thank you for taking the time for us❤️

@Jessica Johnson. Do you know where I could find information on what to eat after a 24 hour fast? I started fasting for a month now. I do a lot of 16/8 , and 20/4 fast. I’m not sure of what to eat. For example I would drink coffee w/ coffee mate after a 20 hour fast. Not sure if that’s safe. What should I eat and drink after 24 hour fast. By the way congratulations in your journey.

I ate healthy for two 2 years but lost nothing Started carnivore, lost 2 kg that I gained the previous week by not eating as usual. Then after that, I started having high insulin issues and fatty liver. Listened to dr Berg who said I need crusifirous veggies. Added that then the pain got better but lost nothing and high blood issues. I was so done and almost lost hope. Then dr Jason Fung said fasting for fatty liver. I went on a thirty day water fast and broke it today on 17 days. I feel a lot better and plan to follow dr Eckberg. I am also going to get my blood work done with my daughter who is a doctor and seem to have started following doctors like dr Peter Attia and others. I also want to get me a keto monitor (haven't done much tests as my last test was a year ago with Gyne who still seem to be in the dark about all the new things and wouldn't put me on estrogen as I still have my ovaries. I believe all these symptoms are because of menopause 😢

Great interview. Thanks to both of you. When I learned about intermittent fasting 4 years ago I luckily stumbled over Dr. Fung's videos. Lost 40 lbs in 3 years without doing exercise and 20 lbs this year while doing moderate exercise 2 times a week. I had lost 10 - 20 lbs many times in my life but every time I gained it back and sometimes even more. Intermittent fasting was the game changer. It makes it so easy to not gain weight again after losing it. Thanks Dr. Fung

I have learnt so much from Dr Fung, he is easy to understand and explains everything in great detail backed up by clinical studies. I’ve always been told that I’m failing by different fitness coaches due to not loosing weight and that I must be doing something wrong or not following the diet plan when actually my body was just responding to the lower calories. I’ve come from a background of AN, I was admitted to hospital whereby I gain heaps of fat and weight which made me depressed and revert back to AN but I can honestly say I’ve got into fasting and it’s a sense of freedom. I fast daily and follow a 16/8. I absolutely love listening to Dr Fung he is so knowledgable and I’m truely Thankful to him for sharing his knowledge.

I've done IF for more than a year now and had lost 14 lbs by October. Even though I still fasted about 17 hours as usual between Halloween and New Years, I ate a lot of holiday junk food and gained 7.5 lbs back which has been very discouraging, but I'm not giving up and am just trying to be more careful with what I eat. I've had a really easy time with the fasting until about 2 weeks ago when I decided I shouldn't eat snacks in the afternoon, but it's been really stressful so I'm going to start having my snack again. It didn't keep me from losing the 14 lbs I lost last year so I hope it doesn't now. I usually go anywhere from 17 to 20 hours a day fasting depending upon whether I'm doing something that keeps my mind engaged so I'm not paying attention to the clock.

Just tell the people to eat less often and not less volume...end of ....I don't eat added sugars and starch and its job done ... Often times it's just thirst not hunger and it passes in a few minutes ...I just eat one great healthy meal in a day ...and if I do get hungry I have sugar free Jello ( jelly in UK ) and a drop of double cream with a few raw chopped nuts .....gives you the mental feeling of eating with the mouth movement and the satiety ... but no insulin spike for you to store the body fat... Feeling great on every way ... should have done it years ago!! You're so right .. calories don't mean a thing to me it's where they are from ....and if it's carb based ...like sugar and starch ...if you're going to count any ....count those... Great vid... thanks Keith

I am reading the Weigh Down Diet (which is not a diet) by Gwen Shamblin and planning on buying Fast, Feast, Repeat soon. I also pre-ordered Fasting Like A Girl by Dr Mindy Pelz. Fasting is NOT a diet. It's a lifestyle change. Fasting is learning to eat less. In America we overdose on food, eating too much and too often. Remember information is the key. From there gleam what works for you and throw out the rest. This is a marathon and a lifestyle change or you will be right back here trying to do a quick fix. Don't beat yourself up for slip ups. Just reset and start again. Detoxing and learning how to live differently isn't easy but well worth it.

Speaking of NASA, vacuums, and questioning consensus thought, how can we have gas pressure without a container? How can gas exist adjacent to a vacuum without the gas increasing in entropy and expanding into the vacuum per the 2nd law of thermodynamics? It would be like opening a can of soda without the gas escaping the can. The sky couldn't possibly be a vacuum.

That's the genius of fasting... You learn what is best for you. I drink my coffee with favored cream but no sugar cause sugar is too sweet for me. I vary my fasting schedule and don't keep up with the windows by only eating when I am hungry. So if I get hungry but can't stop to eat I just extend my fast. If on the other hand I only have 10 minutes to eat then I eat in 10 minutes. Sometimes people get hung up on whether it's a clean or dirty fast but I look at it like this there are all types of fast: clean/dirty, dry/ water, veggie only/meat only, IF, OMAD, ADF and so many eating/fasting windows and no one is the same. Take your time, do your research and find out works best for you and your body. It's all trial and error. Fasting is NOT a diet. It's a lifestyle change. Fasting is learning to eat less. In America we overdose on food, eating too much and too often. Remember information (applied knowledge of what works for you) is the key. From there gleam what helps you reach your goals and throw out the rest. This is a marathon and a lifestyle change or you will be right back here trying to do a quick fix. Fasting is healthy, but I’ve never heard of fasting for the specific purpose of health when it comes to religion. There are certain holidays that people fast and ongoing fasting is considered a time of getting closer to and/or hearing more clearly from God. Focusing on God instead of food. And it’s not just food people fast, although that is the primary way. People fast various things from tv and movies, to computer use etc.

Religious fasting had little to do with a health benefit. Now we are learning that the health benefit came as a by product of the religious fast. People fast as a form of self denial to appease the gods. When you go into food self denial you are literally punishing yourself by denying a pleasurable activity , showing your God that you are sorry for your sins. The gods will then give in to your temper tantrum of not eating and appease you with their blessings , of whatever you are requesting of them. Today the science of fasting is bringing all the health benefits to us that we don't need to fast to appease the gods but for our own health and longevity. With this new knowledge of fasting and autophagy , when we fast we become our own god , no disrespect to the true God - Jehovah. And exercise do work all the time to reduce weight. What you need to do is not replace the amount of calories you have expended during the exercise. The body will need to drawn down on this exercise expended calories from its Glycogen stores until it is used up ( say in 4 weeks time ) and then the drawn down on its Fat stores until it is all used up until you achieve your ideal target weight ( depending on your fat stores , it could take a few months to a few years ). When you do exercise and a 500 calories restricted daily DIET plan the weight reduction process will speed up twice as fast. Now we know that your body has to be TRAINED to burn fat. This should take about 2 to 4 weeks of huunger management . And there is now available endless tips how to overcome the 2 to 4 weeks KETO flu. I did it with eating alot of cabbage and tons of cucumber during my fast in the OMAD routine and drank about 4 cups total of teas and coffee to stave off the hunger , until the hunger dissipates naturally. When my blood pressure dropped dramatically by up to 35 points due to the keto flu in period (4 weeks), I did not know about the KETO flu. But when I learnt of it increased my salt intake by salting my 1 lime juice and my 15 ml ACV ( to sweeten it ) in my I cup of each of my additional liquid intake during my fast. Some days I had up to 3 extra salted limes or ACV , depending on the need for my salt to keep my pressure close to 100 ,to not have me scared of it being too low I did all my regular work and 1/2 hour walking exercise easily. After getting into ketosis ,did not need to take salt and the lime and ACV but still drink about 4 cups coffee teas , chocolate during my fasting time , not to stave off hunger but to get my water supply in. After 4th week ,when my pressure stabilized I started doing 1 hour brisk walking and the pounds just disappeared. I would like to disagree with Dr Fung and say that Diet works , Exercise works . And DIET and EXERCISE work even better and faster , at least for me. It can work with the right understanding of the mechanics behind it as so CLEARLY shown in all these Diabetes , Keto ,Weight loss videos. I can attest to it. It's proven both scientifically (thanks to the research and videos from all of our wonderful health and wellness counsellors like Dr Fung and Dhru) and to the mathematics behind the calorie in calorie out balancing equation. Calorie in = calorie expended through metabolism + calorie stored in glycogen and body fat. Calorie in goes into 3 pathways -- metabolism , glycogen , body/ organ fat. So when you start out on the calorie restriction diet all you have to do is to fight the hunger that is calling to top up this deficit of calorie ( calories from sugar ) and give the body time to switch from glucose burning to body fat burning . If you consume more calories than your target calorie restriction , whether from sugar or fat , you will just replenish what you lose and not lose the necessary weight you are aiming for. And it only takes 2 to 4 weeks to get into ketosis. A small sacrifice to pay for a lifetime's benefit. For those serious about weight loss I would say go for both a calorie restriction diet and exercise at one go. It just works. No if and but.

@@olololo9224 You do not need to avoid carbs but to use carbs as the needs arise Carbs are essential and you get enough from your low carb veges like cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. Also from resistant rice ( put the cooked rice in the fridge before you use it ) and your occasional bread and root crops. What the 'researchers" are saying is we need some essential carbs and the body can make this from the protein we eat and if you don't eat enough protein the body then break down our muscles to turn it into glucose/carbs. So to be on the safe side you can eat carbs sparingly The aim is to avoid carbs when you need to reduce your weight. Once you get to your target weight you can reintroduce carbs and fats ( cheese , butter etc) in your diet. But you need to monitor your weight because you can easily put on the pounds you have lost. I give myself a 3 pounds allowance for increase in weight ,after this I cut my carbs and fats until I regain my target weight. I enjoy everything - ice cream , 80% dark chocolate, cake ,bread , pastries and root crops but I am aware of my WEIGHT gain. It is a lovely experience to maintain my target weight.

I think that being overweight can be the result of different things and it depends on why you’re overweight, as well as how close you are to your body’s stubborn set point. If you’re overweight because of insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, or some other hormonal issue, which is likely the case if you’re someone who’s spent a lifetime struggling with weight, the weight may initially fall off pretty quickly, but it takes a lot to move it any further once your body reaches a certain set point in my experience. It may take some intermittent extended fasts, meaning fasting for 36 hours or more, to get your body to continue burning fat if its reached a stubborn set point that it’s not inclined to move beyond.
