I have not read Stoic philosophy, but have read several human development theorists, and discovered the empiricism of some theories, which I prefer as paradigms(Freud, Kohlberg, Bronfenbrenner, others). I enjoyed your conversation with Ryan Holiday on his life's virtues of courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom leading to greatness. I believe his "greatness" may be equivalent to what Kohlberg discovered as the highest level of human development and functioning (stage six). Ryan is able to face the racism of the past, but does he have the courage to face the presence of racism in American culture and institutions today? Does he believe America, the nation, can move forward in these virtues without coming to terms with the role of racism in both history, and more importantly, current American culture?

Yes!! Love Stoic philosophy and Ryan Holiday is an amazing story teller to package it in such a way that makes it insanely useful in our current world. My favorite virtue is wisdom. Just because I think it is one of the most underrated and neglected. Wisdom is so difficult and requires a lifetime of reaching to just touch the fringes. Excellent conversation!

At 52.00 minutes, or thereabout, Tom and Ryan discuss the issue of when to know whether you're being reckless vs. brave...when hesitating can be a genuine consideration for the high stakes risk you're thinking about making or whether the hesitation is based on fear and survival-based intuition. At that point, I remembered something Tom said in one of his Q&A rant-type videos where he says, that a moment of fear or hesitation is evidence of stakes. That we should go in the direction of where the stakes are high simply because stakes are evidence of meaning and what matters to you. I can't exactly remember the phrasing he used but ultimately it highlighted this:- the fact that this decision is bothering you so much, or like Ryan described 'if it wasn't as high stakes you wouldn't have this much hesitation', means that there is something to actually doing this thing, otherwise you'd just basically just choose the thing that ensures your basic survival.

People today are no less hypocrites than Thomas Jefferson. He grew up and lived during a time when slavery was legal. We did not. What moral right do we have to look down on people of those past generations for their failings, while patting ourselves on the back in the midst of our own hypocricies? Killing children because they are inconvenient and hidden from sight, is arguably worse than slavery. There is just no getting around that.
@rfreeze9 ай бұрын
1) Saying people today are hypocrites and therefore cannot critique is like saying we cannot judge Hitler because people today commit crimes. Makes zero sense. 2) We have a moral right to look down on enslavers...because we know it was morally wrong. And so did Tomas Jefferson. 3) Killing children and hiding them is not NEARLY as pervasive, historically speaking, as American slavery - which lasted or almost 300 years and involved millions! And, by the way, children were killed at the hands of enslavers during that period - only they didn't bother to hide it! 4) To your point....there's just no getting around that.

Here’s a man with true courage. You can see our racial past for what it iwas and is without guilt as long as we are all putting a stop to injustices; shoving it under the rug and tell descendants they’re crazy. That means, equal pay for equal qualifications and work. But it has to start at the individual level. Institutions or groups of people won’t do it. They will hide and blame the victim. The ask for change will get stalled for decades if we don’t take individual responsibilities. People like this writer gives me hope in American’s humanity.
