Train with me in Singapore this August: bit.ly/FightTIP...
Here's a great isolation drill to improve the speed of your jab and straight punches. This point of this exercise is to develop the muscle from the shoulder down, so that you can "snap" your punches faster! This way, when you do spring off the ground using your leg muscle, and rotate your hips, the punch itself be super quick!

dont use full force when trying to puch, you want your hand somewhat relaxed and before the impact activate your full hand mucles. i dont know much about this, i am not a pro, i have 0 experience in this subject, but that seems to make punches faster.

I actually broke my arm from repeatedly overextending my arm with the jab and cross, so you really have to watch out with this. My tip is to rotate your hand at the end, because the corckscrew motion will take the impact away from the elbow and you won't feel any pain.

Great video Shane! Two things: 1. When you show punches, it would be great that you also had the camera angle from behind you, so that people can see how you work your shoulders and how the elbows are kept inside your frame. 2. Nice tip with curls, but I think the best trick to avoid pain from hyperextension is rotating your fist so that your pinky is higher than your index on impact. This rotation helps the joint in solidifying and thus puts less strain on your elbow.

To anyone who suffered some pain in their elbow while doing a fast jab, try to rotate your knuckle when you're throwing the jab Left hand knuckle should be rotated clockwise Right hand knuckle - anticlockwise while throwing a jab Then retract your jab back. Without knuckle rotation, elbow experiences a sudden jerk which can cause extreme pain

The Russians developed a system in the 70s that’s still used in many amateur clubs. It’s based on neural/muscle memory. They used wall pads with punch counters. It’s a 10 second routine where the boxer throws short arm punches with no power. It trains your brain and muscles to recognize an increased speed of muscle contractions in both directions. Some of the lighter weight boxers are able to make contact on the pads over 100 times in 10 seconds. Some pros are now using rubber bands in the opposite direction from traditional method. They stretch the band when pulling back, and have the band assist when throwing the punch. Again, this is a neural/muscle memory exercise,

I'm no expert, but I know for developing speed and power lower reps and higher sets are more effective. As that's how power lifters and football players train. Training explosively for high reps tends to develop poor habits as you begin to fatigue, especially if you are truly using maximal effort each time you punch. But I suppose this is martial arts and performance under fatigue is a virtue that is crucial. Just saying that it's maybe not the most optimal way to develop speed and quickness. I will still try it though

People confuse full extension with over or hyper extension of the elbow. You should never over extend the elbow. Even locking it out with force can cause damage. But you also shouldn't keep it too bent. The way I learned it was "not straight, not bent". Looks exactly like how you throw your punches.

I am a fourth degree black in karate, when to step jab or cross, you never want to fully lock the arm when doing the technique. If you hit someone with a fully locked arm you will mostly likely break your arm. You should always have a very slight bend in the elbow when performing the technique. Again, not a big bend, but a very slight bend.

A QUICK THOUGHT as an avid anatomy / workout nerd --- the shoulder/elbow pain most people experience is indeed from "hyperextension" but i'd like to clarify why - It is very common an error to "throw" punches(language forsakes us) instead of actually "controlling" them Many exert lots energy and force without THINKING about where that energy is going. Without solid control over your muscles(which you build by training with mindfulness and focus) you can very easily use that energy to negatively impact your body, in the jabbing scenario, many people release the bulk of their energy before they've completed the jab, thus slinging your elbow or shoulder to and fro without any means to effectively retract.. I've done this myself for many years because I thought of throwing a punch as I did throwing a baseball.. You must build foundational control!! Your whole body is one unit, always consider how the movement and energy manipulation of any given limb affects the rest of that unit. Thanks for reading if you did.

Thanks for upload bro. This is a good foundation technique in TMA and works wonders. Using isometric holds like straight arm planks (SAP): one arm SAP; handstand, one arm handstand for up to 5 minutes is good, then progress from SAP using tight clenched fist to single arm handstand (against a wall) really develops your punching kinetic chain and all muscle tendon bone and ligament units involved, it also increase bone and mitochondrial density. Happy training . Peace.

I had a trainer that turned me on to Teddy Atlas' method of imagining yourself dipping your hand (fist of course) in and pulling it out of boiling hot water very quickly to be very effective for me in improving the snap in my jab speed. Of course, like everything, it took practice for me to get the feel to maximize my range. I'm not a pro or a trainer, it just seemed to help me and I thought I'd share. I really appreciate your vids, Shane. You're a credit to the community.

Not sure if some one will read this, but my Sifu (master) has actually taught us that the arm never has to be 100% extended but 90% as per other people's experience, some ended with a broken arm when throwing powerful blows extending the arm by 100%. I also believe that curls are great to develop all those muscles, but also doing curls will help you develop the strengh on your arm to stop at 85-90% and avoid breaking your arm when hitting

Punching the air full force is the best way to hyperextend yourself, it only takes a single punch or jab to pull it out of it's socket. Believe me, I did it full force decades ago and ended up in the ER! That's one of the reasons they make punching bags. They not only protect your hands, but also help protect your joints (elbows, knees, shoulders). You're even better off hitting a wall (with heavy gloves) than jabbing thin air. The only exception would be shadow boxing in front of a mirror.

After trying out this drill. This drill can improve your hand speed in 2 weeks. My jab and straight are faster now. Heck I tried this using left and right hook instead and now both my hooks are faster too. Even my uppercuts too.

yeah i really respect your fighting tips i have trained in wing chun for 3 years, i was wondering if you extend your arm all the way it makes it eaiser for us to break it. by the way it doesent matter how strong you are you will still devolp tennis elbow from hyper extention just keep that thought in mind because i have gone against a mma guy for light sparring and he extended his arm all the way and i showed him how i could break it. anyway amazing vdeo and i really support your cause for bullying and so on i have been bullied really bad myself i am 14 by the way. anyway its just a thought not an insult as i said before i really respect you guys your art is great and it really works. thanks.
