HELLO... I purchased a can of tomato powder, used it once, & didn't re-seal it well enough, it hardened up like a rock. This is unlike me because I seal everything thoroughly, always, I simply did not realize the powder was so prone to hardening. Any suggestions, other than a hammer & chisel? Maybe, just dump it in a large bowl, let it soak up warm water, use what I need then freeze what remains?
@foodprepguide2 ай бұрын
Can you can break it into chunks and run it through a high-powered blender? If you can't, then your freezer idea is a good one. :)
@HonoringGeneralG.S.PattonJr2 ай бұрын
@@foodprepguide Yes, the blender idea is a good one, Thanks. I’ve got a high-powered Blendtec blender so I’ll try it. It’s crazy that tomato powder does that. I just saw a guy on YT open a #10 can of tomato powder and it was solid as a brick, an unopened can with a good shelf date… Crazy! It sucks because you can’t measure it properly, unless you have a scale, guessing that might work.

How encouraging to hear you've been enjoying our videos! ❤️ Here's the recipe for ketchup: In a saucepan over medium heat, add: ¾ cup tomato powder 2 cups water 2/3 cup white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar) ½ cup honey 2 teaspoons salt ½ teaspoon onion powder ½ teaspoon garlic powder Whisk until smooth. Stir frequently until the ketchup starts simmering, then reduce the heat to low and cook until it’s as thick as you like it (an average of 10-20 minutes).

Do you freeze dry tomatoes with their skins and seeds? Then do you grind the dry tomatoes into powder? Is it necessary to remove the skins and seeds before freeze drying? Cheers.

Whether dehydrating or freeze drying, I've never removed the skins and seeds. I do, however, add 12 hours of extra time to the freeze dryer.

Tomato powder is expensive . I’m wondering about comparing to canning the sauces. I found 3 lbs 10 oz for $33.92 with 137 - 1Tbs. Servings . I’m not sure about the price value . I can’t think it out to compare with the #10 can , canning 1/2 pint jars. Can you help me understand if I get a good price vs a #10 can into jars
@foodprepguide5 ай бұрын
You can dehydrate your own tomato powder for far cheaper. Now through August is the time of year when you can get tomatoes the cheapest - then just slice, dehydrate, and powder. 🙂 As for store-bought cost comparison of powder vs #10 cans, if you already have the jars and lids, it’d probably be cheaper to can. But, if you’re tight on space or really need your jars for other preservation projects, the powder provides space-saving benefits, too, and can be turned into multiple things. Pros and cons, for sure!

Oh i dont have a dehydrator or freeze dryer

You can dehydrate tomatoes in your oven - slice them, lay then on a baking sheet in a single layer, and "bake" at 200°F (or the lowest your own will go) for approximately 3-4 hours. Then, to make tomato powder, you'll run those dried tomatoes through a blender or food processor. :)

It doesn't have anything added to it. It's just tomatoes that have been dehydrated, then powdered. But people do add seasonings & such to it sometimes and use it like tomato bouillon.
