Erik, with all your experience, I’d like to hear your opinion about vehicles in general. Many others probably would as well… 1. Which vehicle(s) would you recommend people avoid buying? 2. Which vehicles do you rarely see costly repairs required? 3. Which vehicle(s) would you consider the “Most and Least” reliable? 4. Which vehicle(s) do you find it “Easiest and Hardest” to work on or find parts for? Thank you for your great videos, keep them coming! Darin

With an off road vehicle, the inlet hose to the vent valve should be under the hood along with the valve. Ford's done it for years which eliminated that problem EXCEPT on some of the Expeditions that had the vent valve in the back just above the rear diff. Some of those vehicles wouldn't refuel until you removed the purge hose under the hood. Replace the vent valve, vent valve filter and add the updated hose from the vent valve filter inlet to under the hood held in place at one of the master cylinder's tube's. Problem solved. Good diag/repair Mr. O. There was a limited time recall to replace the fuel level sensor. My 06 didn't show the problem, but a coworker's 07 Frontier had the problem. He got the replacement sensor and labor for free. NICE!

from what I've learned watching you guys over the past 6 months is that most used sellers and secondaries automatically assume that a vehicle over a few years old has automatically *fried its computer*. I made that mistake as well back in November. the damage turned out to be a blown fusible link in the post wire of the alternator; I didn't know they were still USING fusible links. the vehicle turned out to have a major enough hole in non-strategic areas to be classed as junk by the PA rust rules.

@@terryharvey4811 Kia did it on the Fuel Filter for the Sedona/Carnival in 2012, but failed to tell anyone that you would need to purchase a new Water In Fuel Sensor as the old one had a slightly different thread pattern to the original. As Eric O said it's CYA for Nissan. Instead of the mechanic just replacing the evap canister only to find out the vent valve quits 1 week later and the customer has to come back again. IIRC the only updated parts are the hoses to the filler neck and the filler neck.

I am sure that the canister was plugged and at fault but something I was taught and have experienced myself is that an inoperative or inaccurate fuel level sensor can cause evap vent faults. The pcm uses fuel level input to determine the amount of time it should take to get to a certain amount of vacuum and also determine the rate of vacuum decay. So I always trouble shoot fuel level faults if present. Very cool videos and I love all the personality that comes with them. Thanks for doing them.

On your previous video, I mentioned that I had a Nissan, which was a 1988 or 89 Pathfinder (I'm old). Someone tried to siphon gas out of my tank so got a locking gas cap. A few days later, they siphoned more gas. The undid the hose clamps on the gas hose from the filler neck to the gas tank which was easily accessible in the rear wheel well. Great engineering.

I took the Xterra to a Nissan Dealer when i t was under warranty and produced the same tech bulletin you were referring to and the one about the sending until and asked to have the work done under warranty. The dealer did the sending unit no questions asked, but said they will not do the valve. The reason given is that I drive on dusty roads and the tech bul excluded that. Imagine that living in the desert driving a 4x4 and I did something so horrible as driving on a dusty road. Which all of the advertising literature for the Xterra was all about.

Sending units are really common on the older nissans, As for the bulitin the reason for the laundry list of parts is because they are prone to filling up with dirt/dust so the new hoses etc have filters and a different collector unit to minimize the dirt infiltration. When you said short/open i was expecting the evap valve to be badly corroded they expand so much they just short out in a spectacular fashion and is an easy find . vehicle not running clear the code and it will come back instantly. I cut one of those canisters open once just for giggles it was plugged solid.

Eric, Nissan had a recall on one of those relays back in the day. The relay would fail internally and cause a no start condition. Truck would run fine, shut it off and when you tried to start it again, DEAD. I'm betting that happened and they didn't take the time to to check if the recall had been done and just started yanking relays to see which one was bad. That relay was the only time my 05 ever left me stranded. All over a $2 relay.

Always fun working behind someone isn't it. I got a similar problem I've been playing with for a bit on my 07 galant. Last time I just wiggled everything because I didn't have a lot of time. Lasted long enough to get the sticker, lol. Now I just gotta find the time to fix it more permamnently, lol. Never know what'll go next. Thanks for sharing.

Be glad it doesn’t need a starter like my Titan does. It’s underneath the intake manifold. I can’t find a mechanic in my area willing to change it so soon I’ll be cussing up a storm while changing it.

I had a manual caviler where the canister valve that got stuck closed and kept making the car stall at idle conditions, I was under the car having my buddy play with the key as I was smacking the crap out of the valve, it opened finally and I unplugged it and left it like that for about a month until I replaced it, I hate climbing under cars in winter lol

My guess, is since its a nismo 4x4 it was offroaded. Hard, probably some deep water crossings got all the dirt in the evap.

Yes. Nissan Does have s "CYA" Approach for all of the Emissions Junk. Because, Here in Most of the Asian Countries, They are not used at all. I have a Nissan Frontier here in Bataan Philippines. There is no canister on it.

Hey Eric, I have the same gen. Nissan, a 2007 Exterra, pretty much the same truck as the Frontier. Its a N.Y. upstate car. Had Nissans in the past,70s and 80s Z cars & Maxima's. Loved Them!!! So when I got this 07, 2nd gen. with 48k mi. I thought I was doing good. Yea . good for about 20k then every system started to fail. 1st the radiator trans cooler leaked internally and wrecked the tranny, Nissan replaced it under warranty. Ok , but that was only the beginning. Hear is the SHORT LIST. Cats & Cats back, rear leaf springs. Front and rear shocks. Lower control arms & bolts. front hubs. and brake dust shields. Throttle body and all the rubber intake boots. Intake manifold gaskets. coils packs x4. Tpms senders...... Rottin brake lines, FUN! All under 100k. Do I need to go on. Oh.yea Lets not forget the infamous Nissan EEEEvap system. Nissan figured let's place it behind the rear wheel and vent it,,, in just the right spot to suck in all the road dirt and salt. Been down that road too. Yes I still have this truck. Why sell it now. It looks great . runs great , rides great. CHEEPER TO KEEPER. Good thing I am a mechanic, or is it? Regards George

@@lordjaashin Thanks! No, my particular case didn't call for hospitalization. Just lots of powerful antibiotics, drink lots of water and A LOT of bed time, which it's starting to feel more like a bother instead of helping. My back is killing me from being in bed for so many hours a day. It kills every remote desire you have of moving around. Every joint on your body it's in pain.

That canister could end up putting a huge vacuum in the tank and collapsing the tank. The evap solenoid could also be reject from overfill of tank from topping. The topping of tank will flood out the solenoid rendering it useless. But then, if customer will keep topping tank after this problem is fixed, the same problem will appear. Hey , quit topping the tank. The gas station sensor shuts off to keep tank from overfill.

I can tell you as a nissan master tech that at one point it probably had a loose battery terminal which caused a voltage spike and wiped out the bcm and ecm. Ive changed more than my fair share of them at the dealership. But great video

Had the same code, with 20000 on my frontier and my canister was full of water, pulled it out, drained the water, let it dry, and reinstalled it. There was no more issue after that. I found that the vent valve boot wasn't secured (from the factory) letting water in and also causing my fueling to be really tricky. If it would go full pressure on fueling from the pump nozzle, I would hear the Nissan whistle and blowback on me, so I would have to fuel at a slow speed..
