A great scene from Used Cars where President Carter's speech is interrupted by a commercial.

Back in 1979 when my parents first got cable, this was one of the first movies that I watched on HBO and it just happened to air on a Friday night, so that meant I got to stay up late since I didn't have to go to school the next day. Back then, HBO didn't air R rated movies before 10 pm. Since I was still too young back then to discover women, you know what, and you know what, as in the scene where they jam a football game, I consider this scene to be the funniest scenes of the whole film.

It's the most vulgar movie Spielberg has ever done. I don't think he wanted another one on his resume.
@robbiestewart895 жыл бұрын
They didn't do a sequel because the movie failed poorly at the box office when it got released in July of 1980. When it later aired on HBO, it also failed to pick up a cult following due to HBO's then policy of not airing rated R movies until after 10 pm at night, plus HBO wasn't a 24/7 operation back then the way it is now. Now, "Eddie And The Cruisers" which was rated PG was a different story. It was a box office failure when first released in 1983, but became a huge cult success after HBO aired it. Demand for the soundtrack became such that CBS, Inc (then distributor for Scotti Brothers Records) had to print more copies to meet the demand, which resulted in the sequal movie "Eddie Lives" a few years later and John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band (then a regional band from the north east) becoming household names. They would go on to release three albums under their own name for Scotti Brothers Records also.

I'm thrilled that no sequel was made. It would never have lived up to the original.

To this day, I've never seen a film incorporate so many gags. They hardly missed a single opportunity to slip in an extra joke within the entire masterpiece of situation comedy. From the outset, with the odometer rolling back followed by the hundred dollar bill bait with the fishing pole to reel in the sucker from across the street to the Grandpa Munster judge scene in which he yells at the counselor while slinging his gavel down on a mini guillatine on his desk saying, "counselor, one more outburst like that outta you and I'll have your balls in a sling"... Everything said was with a purpose, everything worked seamlessly into the overall plot.

It was hilarious listening to them telling stuff that they did on set making the move. I actually saw the movie in the theater back in the day and laughed myself silly. Unusual for me to watch a comedy and even more so to enjoy it that much. The DVD brought back the memories. The dog Toby was a hoot.

Next year it’all be 40 years since Used Cars arrived on the silver screen. This fractured flicker is for anybody who has ever purchased a pre-owned set of wheels and wound up with a lemon (I’ve been there myself). Used Cars is breathtakingly hilarious but the language can be too strong for tender ears. That being said, this is my all-time favorite scene. Robert Zeneckis lost no opportunity to zing President Jiminy Carter. I love it!

I found the filming location on Google Maps not too long ago. Roy's car dealership building is still there. However, there's an apartment complex where the New Deal Used Cars set was. Interestingly, there's an old motel that can be seen in the background of some of the shots in the movie. It's still there.

This country had great disdain in 1980 for President Carter following his perceived weakness on an unresolved Iran Hostage Crisis, not to mention recession and an embarrassing episode caused by brother Billy Carter over the summer. Pretty much reflects the national sympathy by this time.
