Try switching to Valvoline Restore and Protect. It’s made to clean piston rings and any type of varnish/carbon build up below the piston. Your best bet for any carbon cleaning above the piston would probably be a walnut blast.

2014 Subaru Outback owner. 98k miles. I can confirm It burns about a quart and a half between oil changes. If you own one, you’ve got to keep up with the oil levels. That being said, I’m probably going to keep driving until it dies because it’s cheaper to add oil than to buy a new car nowadays. Dealer stock is low, and they gouge for what they do have in stock.

Same here, 2008 Accord, uses oil like crazy but other than that it’s a great car, I just keep a close eye on the oil and add frequently. It’s odd because back in the day you could tell if a car was using oil by the blue smoke from the exhaust, not anymore, no sign of it using oil unless you check the dipstick, it certainly is an annoying problem for an otherwise great vehicle.

I had a 2012 Volvo S60 t6 awd with the 3.0 liter 6 cylinder and had this issue for the entire length of time that I owned the car. This engine is a carry over to other models other than XC70 in this video, but also the S60, S80, XC90, and XC60 with the 3.0 liter 6 cylinder. I would strong recommend avoiding them unless you have a lot of money to put into these cars! I traded it in and cut my losses!

Some Lexus LS460 are known to burn up to 4 qts of oil between oil changes. Since the oil pan holds 9.7 qts (instead of typical 5 qts), the loss of 1- 4 qts of oil isn't really noticed.

I had to put in 1ltr of oil in my 2007 Audi A4 Avant 2.0 Special Edition petrol. It was a known issue I believe. But I loved the speed and handling. Stuck to the road like glue. Toyotas - no problem at all.

I had a 2017 Hyundai Sonata that was a great car for a while. I did regular oil changes with full synthetic recommended oil and filter changes and once it hit 50,000 miles the oil started disappearing. At 65,000 it went to a quart every 500 miles. I sold it at 99,000 miles.

If you were the original owner, Hyundai has a 10 year - 100K mile warranty on the powertrain. You can request an oil usage test, and if you use a quart every 500 miles then they are obligated to fix it. If a dealer gives you any flack about that, you should open a case with Hyundai Motor America, and seek legal advice if that does not work. Having been on several Hyundai forums, it appears to me that Hyundai does honor its warranty, if you maintained the car as required in the owner's manual. I own a 2009 Hyundai Genesis with the 3.8L V6, and my engine does not use ANY noticeable amount of oil in-between oil changes (according to the dipstick reading), but I only have 77K miles on it.

Spiros K, I bought a 1990 Volvo 240dl in Sept of 2000. Drove that car for 21 years and loved it. It didn't burn oil, conquered the winter months here in the northern midwest and got driven everywhere. Late in 2021 I finally had to just retire it for good, rust was just taking over the lower body & undercarriage. It had well over 300,000 miles on it and I'd have bought another one as a replacement if I could have found one within a reasonable distance from me .... but there were none around.

I love Volvos, the main point that he is missing is stating 3.0 turbo charged anything turbo or supercharged will burn oil because of the pressure. i had two xc90 with 3.2 engine no problem i have xc70 with 3.2 naturally aspirated engine no issues. so buy regular engine and you can do 400.000 km no problem

It is insane that some cars depreciate faster than they accelerate. Anything thats expensive will do that , and the movement the warranty is over (usually 4 years) you are the one that starts bleeding . BMW and Audi will be sort of problem free during the warranty period, but they even put a few quarts of oil in your trunk! If you don't care about "Image" avoid any GDI engine, and most Eurotrash.

My Equinox had the blowing oil problem. Chevrolet fixed the problem and replaced all the pistons. I had six months left on the warranty. 162,000 miles and running like a top. Other than tires, an AC issue and the piston replacement I have had no repairs. It’s a 2013.

There’s a fundamental misunderstanding about how high performance engines are engineered. In high performance, particularly turbocharged and supercharged applications, piston ring gaps are much larger to accommodate expansion due to higher cylinder pressure and temperature. This allows combustion gasses to “blow by” the pistons and pressurize the crank case. These modern engines have a complex crank case ventilation and oil separating system to handle this. If your engine is burning oil, likely the positive crankcase ventilation system needs to be serviced or replaced. Also driving habits definitely influence the issue. Running the engine hard before it’s had a chance to warm up and close the ring gaps will introduce significantly more pressure in the crank case. What am I basing this on? Owning several Volkswagen and Audi products ranging from 1.8Ts to 4.0Ts, turbo and supercharged, up to 250k miles on some. I’ve never had an oil consumption issue. As a byproduct I’ve never had an intake carbon issue on an FSI engine. Maintain your stuff and warm your engine up before you smash your foot in it.

As someone with a 2014 Subaru Legacy, I can say it is one of the ONLY cars I've ever own that does NOT consume oil like it's going out of style. My BMW was the worst with it, a qt. every 1000 EASILY if not more.

Too thin oil is a huge contributor to this. The oil returns are too small also so they tried to offset this with thinner oil. Another contributing factor is the thinner oil atomizing and basically evaporating. They also boosted the oil pumps speed to offset the oil viscosity to create a higher oil pressure. Finally the recommended oil change intervals are further apart which causes the oil to thicken and sludge in the engine. The cause of all this I point to EPA standards and poor engineering. Adding turbos and superchargers to this increases the likelihood for problems and not only relating to oil consumption.

Subaru -- sub par reliability never thought I would hear these words !!!!! Also petrol Audis in the mid 2000's did have an oil consumption issue which was due to the narrowness of the oil scraper rings having a tendency to become blocked with carbon thereby ceasing their function of oil control. You missed the 2015,16,17 Volve S&V 60's with 2.0l T5 Turbo engines. Actually I think all the Volvo engines had oil consumption issuses. The oil rings are the issue getting clogged up. For all that have an issue with oil consumption with an otherwise good running engine try a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil next time you have to add a quart. You may not see an immediate reduction but you should some over the long term. My Volvo went from having to put a quart in every 400mi miles to over 1400mi. I'm hoping the number will continue increase.

To be fair, my comment isn't about calling out my much enjoyed brand, Chrysler/dodge. That said, my wifes and my '04 Durango (5.7l V8) burns a qt every ~1k miles or so, but runs like a beast at 172k miles and rolling, and my '05 Sebring (2.4l i4) burns a qt every 1,500-2,000 miles with 151k miles on the odometer, but still a fun little sedan. As these cars get older and see wear and tear, and some fun times, I don't expect them to be burn-free, but if it's fresh off the assembly line and less than 100k miles, it shouldn't go through more than a qt in 5k miles, just my opinion. :)

2015.5 Volvo S60. Even though a service bulletin was issued, Volvo expects the owner to pay for new pistons and rings to be installed. Volvo used this SAME piston and ring design as in the previous years six cylinder engines in this video, so they knew. The car made it to 98,000 miles and was burning a quart every 400 miles. Yes, four hundred miles. First and last Volvo we will ever own.

Changed the timing belt and all the fluids and it's a great little car. If you have a used ride and it ONLY uses one quart between changes, count yourself lucky. Aluminum blocks, aluminum heads, aluminum or alloy pistons, government regulations forcing quality sacrifice for fuel economy....you should expect even a new ride to use a little oil. A quart every 1k miles is ridiculous though on new or late model rides.

Building to last isn`t that difficult, building economically and only as necessary is difficult. They used to built engines and parts which could do +500.000km and then at one point they all pulled their old models from the scrapyard, disassembled everything and looked at it. Everything which was still in good condition but on a car which went to a scrapyard anyway was downgraded. Add the pressure of competition and the ever more increasing pressure from your customer for a fuel efficient and inexpensive car, BUT with all the features and gimmicks a car has to have these days. After warranty of 5-7 years its none of the manufacturers business, it`s only a used car out in the wild. They would gladly sell you a new one and everything older then 10 years is considered ancient anyway by most people these days. So they also don`t really care.

This is mainly the cause of manufacturers trying to lower the internal friction inside an engine, so they fit piston rings with less spring pressure. These softer rings are the cause of all modern engines having consumption issues because they don't make a decent seal between the rings and the cylinder wall. In the search for better fuel mileage we are going backwards with sound engineering standards. 30 and 40 years ago cars would use negligible oil and were much more reliable. I have a 2011 BMW X5 twin turbo xdrive35i, it doesn't appear to use much oil, but I always seem to smell burnt oil. In fact when it sits for a while and I start it up you can see the oil burned smoke coming through the vents. Anybody have any ideas? I just drove it 2,000 miles to and from Texas it did not appear to use much oil but once the car is heated up and driving I don't smell that burn oil smell, maybe only very occasionally. It's when it sits for a while and you started up then you can smell that horrible burned oil smell.

If you aren't checking your oil even on a brand new ride ONCE A WEEK you're asking for problems. Surely you have enough time to pop the hood and check the stick. It's not just the cars on this video. Chevy has a new 3 cylinder turbo engine. How long will it take to use up a 3 cylinder that runs at high rpm and heat ranges. GM is discontinuing the V6 3.6L engine which is a shame. Ford has already discontinued their V6 option in rides other than trucks. I have a 2015 Chevy Equinox, like the one on this video. BUT it has the 3.6L V6. NO oil burning, better power. It was a problem in the first couple years but by 2014 was likely the best domestic V6 on the market.

It's possible to choose carefully and do fine - at least I have so far, with a US Model 2014 Audi A5 2.0T (now 67,000 miles, engine code CPMB) and a 2017 Subaru Forester XT 2.0T (now 72,000 miles, FA20A engine). Both my cars consume virtually zero oil between 5,000 mile changes still today. Also, give Audi some credit for the electronic dipstick - it is a lot easier to push a button or two to see your oil level anytime you want, than pull and wipe a dipstick. I have done enough of my own science experimentation to have proved that the electronic dipstick can accurately register an oil loss of as little as one-quarter of one quart (8 fl. oz.). And I believe if you hit the oil's "minimum" mark the car will alert you automatically, you don't have to seek a check. As for Subaru, dipstick-checking technique has to be careful - you cannot get an accurate reading without first extracting the stick, wiping it off, and reinserting it. Level ground is essential. The video also glosses over a very major change in Subaru engines which happened in the early 2010s decade for various models - the change from 'EJ" engines to "FA" and "FB" engines. (you can see the engine type on the car's door-jamb data plate). The EJ engine is the main source of the head-gasket talk, while the Fs are the main source of the oil consumption talk. So either type can present an issue, but be very sure that your mechanic knows which is which.

@@frankd9015 I'd say the important thing is to be consistent - no matter when you check the oil, if you see it staying the same, you know you don't have much consumption and you're fine. And as long as you let the oil drain for more than a few minutes, and you wipe the dipstick off carefully, all my cars have always been quite consistent between hot and cold, parked or recently running. Also - make sure you use level ground, or at least always the same location pointing the same direction.

Volvo: Synthetic oil frequently should be changed every 7,500 - 10,000 miles. So 1 qt between 3750 miles and 5000 miles. OMG, the horror! and 25% of customers reported that. Are you a mechanic/Technician? And a hint, oil leaks like from the valve cover isn't oil burning.

In those yrs had replace starter water pump radiator alternator twice frond end work just over 100k, bought her camry like one i have now. 400k 1 alt 1 radiator, 1 02 sensor, everything else original like.mine at 350k

About VAG and BMW engines thats no news at all....Subaru pre 2010 2.0 turbo engine with some proper maintenance can last for more than 200k miles...unfortunately I had to sacrifice my hard earned cash to acquire the knowledge and experience.....T6 Volvo engines are utterly rubish
