I had this happen on a 4Runner transmission pan drain plug. I drilled out the stripped threads, ground the inside surface flat, smooth and level and welded a nut on the inside. Now my drain plug is a bolt with a copper crush washer. It took some time but it is far and away better than the original and it has never leaked. You may also be able to simply tap it for the next size up if you can figure out a sealing arrangement. Whether or not you can switch to a crush washer would depend on if you have a nice flat surface around the drain hole.

There have been several reveals out on the interwebs where some stores place 'On Sale' tags on the rack and underneath the tag the Original Price was lower than the Sale price. :D Yea, they just didn't charge you as much. A certain grocery chain likes to put the 'Your price' tags on most of their products, so they don't mark up the price quite as high as they would like and you get the feeling that you are saving....

In the UK we have one large supermarket chain that shows two prices; One is your price but the other is the reduced price for 'Club Card Members', which is a way to get as many customers as possible to register for their valuable Database, which shows them exactly who spent what, where and when, how much they spent and how they paid for it. Even then you need to be careful of 'Twin Pack' offers which turn out to be more than buying two singles.

I second the timesert repair method. They are the best available. Minimal removal of material as the inner and outer threads are "timed" the peaks are matched. The original thread diameter is retained. The repair sleavs lock in place and they do not back out. I started using timesert inserts more than 40 years ago starting with air cooled VW spark plug threads, than later with striped block head studs. Timesert are OEM for thread repair for most USA car companies.

Back in the 70s/80's, I had an Austin Mini Cooper S. When I would order a part, the wait time was quoted as "three weeks to a month or longer" for anything that was not in stock. In fact I ended up working there pumping gas and driving ordered cars to the dealership. I was schooled in how to inspect the car before driving away, check all fluids before departure, yes, the guys at the factory would occasionally not put oil in the engine, coolant in the rad, brake fluid in the master cylinder and sometime no oil in the differential (listen for noise). So this sabotage was the unionized workers method of getting back at the company, to ruin the company's reputation which was and turned out to be an incredibly stupid thing to do as the company no longer exists and all those dedicated union members ended up without a job for several years.

It happened to me 2 yrs ago. 5 weeks waiting for a repairer to fix a fault. I need my car for work, so i could not work and got no pay for the 5 weeks. (My usual shop was closed over the Christmas holiday, so I took it to the only place that was open. Took it back after the 5 weeks and my usual shop fixed it in less than 1 hour. Faulty ignition coil. $200 to fix and lost $6,000 in pay.)

I feel you on the "save" thing. If you buy something that is worth $2, and they sell it to you for $2,, but typically have it marked up to $4, and it's "on sale" today, NO, you did not "save" 2 bucks, you merely just didn't lose $2 by overpaying. You didn't save squat.

I've never seen, a more conscientious mechanic! It would've been so easy, to just charge them for the new oil, after all, they own a Jaguar, LOL! But instead, you saved them quite a bit of money, as well as did a little to help the environment, by now disposing of perfectly good oil. The dead dinosaurs thank you...😉😉

a lot of that grocery store stuff is saving them money. They want to be able to track who buys what when so they know bobby comes in on tuesday and gets 1 candy bar each week. They don't need to have 10 candy bars each week but can order 1 on monday to have it tuesday . Saves them tons of money and they over charge the people who don't take part. so your " savings " is actually the normal price.

I wonder how many components have been stripped out by the use of hand tools and proper torque? I'm sure there's some but what's the ratio of Hand Tools to Power Tools? My point being, and I could be off base here, butb what's wrong with using hand tools and proper torque where it's supposed to be used? I know it takes some extra time but there's an awful lot of of legitimate engineering that goes into every single fastener and component and how they work together. Also, I have been a victim of said enginerds myself so I'm also not a huge fan of the insane, nerly diabolical BS they pull.
@timjohnun4297
@timjohnun4297 Жыл бұрын
Time is money. If you can halve the labour time (And you can, with power tools) you can theoretically halve the labour cost. On non critical fasteners the torque isn't critical and any experienced mechanic can tell if they are tight enough or not, even if they use the power tool to nip the fasteners and then do the final torque by hand. I have worked as a mechanic for 30 plus years and could count on one hand how many fasteners I have stripped from over tightening. Put it this way: if you work for an employer who pays by the hour, you will always be under the pump to get the job done as fast as possible. And with no comeback.

@@timjohnun4297 I follow that. I'm 44 and have been turning wrenches since I was single digits. I'm not a certified mechanic but have spent enough time around vehicles to consider myself a novice. With that said, as in the case of this video on particular and operations like it, are the oil pan bolts and drain plug torque sensitive at all?

Weld a new plug receptacle in. I used my Suzuki Geo metro as a tow truck despite it's blowing head gasket. I rescued a dihatsu cupra (minature Volkswagen beetle) from the middle Lane of a 3 lane one way gyratory system. Complete stranger, I noticed their light were very dim then they just stopped. Cute little car, I had the tow roap that had not been used in ten years, do why not, I felt like doing g a good deed with the limited miles I have left in the motor.

That's why I always install a Fumoto drain valve on the first oil change of all my vehicles, going back about thirty years. No chance of damaging oil pan drain threads if you don't remove and reinstall a drain plug on every change. It's also nice not having a big gush of oil making a mess as it does when you pull a regular drain plug.

I have Fumoto valves installed on my 3 vehicles and agree they make oil changes easier and less messy. My concern is that they drain so slowly I wonder if the bottom of the oil pan is getting a good flush.
