I have a warming oven on my LSG Offset and I use the charcoal basket and use the warmer oven like a barrel cooker. Burns for 10 plus hours with little to no tending. Makes the best ribs IMO which I hang in the oven. Additionally I don't use the divider plates I just pour a 1/2 chimney of lit coals on a half basket full of unlit coals and wood chunks. Fire burns outward from the center and it works great.

I’m loving your game plan here. I really wish I would’ve added the warming oven. It’s a real nice addition and adds another addition of versatility to an already amazing smoker. Smoke on!!

Ed did you have the tuning plates in when you used this basket?? Thanks for the video.
@robertdewitt6252 жыл бұрын
I use the same method to light my coals with the can. The only difference is I cut the both ends out of a metal coffee can. After filling the basket around the can with unlit coals I fill the inside with lit coals and pull the can out with pliers or channel locks. You can do this outside the firebox if there isn't enough room inside to get the can out. Keep da smoke roll'n.👍

@robert dewitt Thanks for watching and yessir. I do the same way you do it on my Drum and WSM except I use a hallowed out paint bucket and use the handle to remove it. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment and YESSIR!! Smoke on💨💨💨

Totally agree. The versatility of this pit was a HUGE deciding factor in choosing LSG. Not to mention the excellent build quality. That basket will help you get some Z’s for sure. But hey, thanks for checking out the content and dropping a comment. I definitely thank you and appreciate you Boss. Peace and blessings

Great info, thanks for the video. I was waiting to see the food. 🤣 I have a LSG 30" Vertical, but I have not fired it up yet. I want to get that basket or fire management system first.

Hey PapaBear!! Thanks for watching kind Sir! Run out and get a piece of expanded metal about 1 1/2’ long and 2’ wide. Bend 8” on the left and right sides \_/ and you pretty much have the fire mgmt basket at a fraction of the price. The meat I cooked will be uploaded by tomorrow. Happy smoking

That’s a good method my brother….I’ve got the LSG 30” vertical offset, and it definitely requires baby sitting, but produces the best BBQ I’ve ever cooked.

Great video & great info!!! I kinda do the same, but a little different... Remove the baffles completely, take an old large metal coffee can (about the size of your paint can) and cut the bottom & top out of it. Place can in middle of basket, fill basket with charcoal and some wood chunks around the coffee can. Dump desired lite charcoals into can and remove can with a large pliers.

Well done Ed. This is exactly how I use my basket. The “S” configuration just does not work. I set that thing completely on fire so many times I was about to scrap it! I figured out this method about a year ago, and it has been a game changer on overnight cooks. Thank you for making a video explaining the process. Oh… I thought I was subbed to your channel… but I wasn’t… but I am now! Cheers… 🍻🍻🍻!

Ive been using my grates in my fire box and doing 8+ hours cooks with lump. But I can't get my smoke chamber up to temp.
@gratesbbq2 жыл бұрын
@khristopher boutrque thanks for checking us out. Try choking off you stack little by little to see if that helps to get the chamber hotter, This will stop heat from escaping so fast and since your not burning splits you don’t have to worry about dirty smoke as much. Also make sure your intake on your firebox is just slightly cracked. Hope it works out. Thanks for watching and help us out by subbing if you haven’t already. Peace and blessings!!
@khristopherbourque42212 жыл бұрын
@@gratesbbq yea man I'm going to try it for sure, as I leave both stacks open when I burn splits. That makes since because my fire box wil rock 250-305 for a solid 8+hrs depending on how much air flow I allow in.
@evilTexanBBQ2 жыл бұрын
Good info. I've got an LSG IVS that runs like how you're using yours. You will benefit from wood chunks mixed in with the charcoal. Also shut that thing all the way down. I can't tell if you did that from the video or not but using charcoal you are looking for super low oxygen and super low draw so make sure the stack and damper are barely cracked. Using wood you're trying to do the opposite, high oxygen and high draw. Good run there, just giving tips that might help. Thing I've found is that nothing is really set it and forget it. You have to tend to the meat anyway so throwing a log on isn't too bad but if you're doing large cuts like a brisket or butt you can leave it be for 5-6 hours while you get some sleep. How much lump did you go through in that 6.5 hours? Happy Easter Ed. Looking forward to seeing more on the LSG. 😎

Why would I buy a top of the line offset and just burn coal??
@gratesbbq2 жыл бұрын
@Irv Wander Thank you for watching. I don’t think many people would buy a top of the line offset JUST to burn coal. The purpose of this video was to show the versatility of this pit and that you have additional options on how you can run an offset. A lot of people don’t like offsets because they feel like they have to be up all night adding splits to cook a Brisket etc. I just wanted to show that doesn’t have to be the case. Hope that explanation helps. Thanks for watching and peace and blessings to you.
@fooballyou2 жыл бұрын
I'd be afraid to cook a brisket without wood. Charcoal is fine for just grilling, but smoking? Nah.....give me wood or it won't taste right. You did have heat for a good long time without tending to it, just the wrong smoke or no smoke imo.
@gratesbbq2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Bro, Royal Oak is just Oak charcoal so the flavor is pretty much the same as well… Oak, aside from the hickory strips that I added. This was just a chuck roast I used to test the basket. If I were doing brisket I’d definitely run with splits to start but once it’s time to wrap I wouldn’t mind finishing it off with the basket of lump or B&B charcoal simply because at that point your just using the fuel to finish the cook and not add flavor. Definitely see your point though and I thank you for watching and commenting. God bless you and peace.
