Gait belts are safe and easy to use once you know how... for some reason they are very intimidating. Glad the video was helpful! My website has some information on transfers and mobility as well - things you might need to know.

I don't use a gait belt often; as a night RN, I really don't get to a lot of PT with my patient to see their level of mobility, but I find this to be a great source of information. Nice job!

Just realized that I have put on the gait belt the wrong way. I remembered only to "chew with teeth" and "swallow" like the normal belt but not the inside out. No wonder it always lose after assisting my husband. Thank you, best information about the gait belt instruction that I have viewed.

This is very helpful. I've just begun needing to guide my husband (Alzheimer's) to sit on the edge of the bed or his chair. Twice he sat down too early and fell on the floor. Then I did have a time getting him up. A nice lady gave me her husband's gait belt after he passed on, and I couldn't even get it buckled! When I got it on (backwards) I had it way too loose. Thank you so much.

I always use one hand (but that can depend on the situation). If transferring a patient I use both hands on either side of them on the gait belt. If walking a patient, I put one hand flat on their low back with all my fingers UNDER the gait belt and my thumb OVER it... this gives me input as to balance and allows me grab the belt in an instant if something should go wrong.

what's really strange is the pin running through your buckle isn't doing anything other than being the buckle hinge pin. i have the same buckle only the belt loop is sewn over that pin. cool instructions. i've been caring for an elderly for quite a while and even the medical nurses and bathers and physical therapist don't want to give up any good info. no explanations unless you ask.

Hello, I am a new CNA and after watching this video, I was told to put the gait belt around the person, just under the breastbone. I didn't realize there was more than one way to put the belt around someone. Is there a technique that is best or it just depends on the person you're transferring? Thanks for the video.
@marciaoliver60989 жыл бұрын
Hello Heather - congrats on your new CNA obtainment! As I talked about in the video - there is no one "right" way - it does depend. Some patients have very large midriffs and it's impossible to fit a gait belt at the waist. Even if you hook two together, it will likely slide right up the body and catch under the arms - leaving you and the patient in danger should you then need the belt for that instant that you always dread! So, I generally (95%) of the time put it low - It's easier on me and the patient. It's overall a better placement for women then below the breast bone. Putting it at the waist also allows for you to manage the patient more at their center of gravity and thus prevent falls more often. Having the gait belt up high means that a near fall now becomes "top heavy" and you've got a lot more quick work to do to prevent the unwanted "patient meets floor" outcome, not to mention that tugging hard on a gait belt up high on a woman could turn out to be more painful than a fall would! Hope that helps! Godspeed!
