My Rothenberger swaging tool sits in the back of the van. I press 99% of my fitting now. Besides I always anealed my copper pipe. It softens the pipe and helps harden it. Preventing it from splitting.

Hey Matt, What size were you swaging? I don't use expander tools such as the hydraulic or the this one for 3/8" or smaller. The opening size between the die teeth end up cracking the pipemon 3/8". This doesn't happen every time but sometimes it will have a crack that you can't see it with 3/8". Sometimes it will swage the 3/8" ok but I find that using the hammer or turn style swager with the swage block works best for 3/8" every time. For the other sizes 1/2" to 7/8", it works pretty darn good. I will tell you that depending on the manufacturer and the batch, the copper tubing may be able to be bent but just is not annealed enough and can crack when trying to expand. Annealing is the heat temp process that allows the tube to be soft. This doesn't happen very often but when it does, you may want to let your distributor know if it is new. I had a 50 ft box of line set that was new and I was trying to bend it through the building. It started kinking in spots. I got pretty frustrated and was thinking, this does not normally kink like this. I ripped it out, went back to the shop and got another 50' box and had no problem running it into place with no kinks. I called the distributor and they contacted the manufacturer. Come to find out that they recalled that batch of line set from all distributors and they could tell by manufacturer number on the box. They sent two boxes to replace the one that was bad and I din't have to give them the old one because they knew the problem due to the batch number I read off of the box. Anyway all that just to say that some tubes are annealed enough to bend some but not a lot. If you buy ACR copper, it should be fine for swaging. In some situations like that, we need to just add the coupling and move on as a lesser annealed tube will still be fine for holding in the refrigerant long term but just won't bend or swage as nice. In a pinch a tube could be annealed with heat from a torch in order to swage prior to brazing but the whole problem is oxidation in the tubing is created and that is no good but if you are trying to make a small swaged piece, it is possible to clean the inside of the tube prior to putting it onto the system such as 5/8"-7/8". 1/2 I was told heating it up next time would help I normally don’t have a problem except with 3/8 sometimes I do like the Hilmor Bender and swage I have the yellow jacket kit where you can flare and swage as well a little more time-consuming which I’m OK with as long as it comes out correct I appreciate your experience and help once again Thanks

It is easy to ream a pipe when it is not fixed in place, however, what do you do when your faced with a line set that is fixed in place and you have to cut pipe. Reaming the section of pipe that faces downward is easy to ream, however, what about the pipe facing upward. Deburing the bottom half of the pipe would cause burrs to fall down inside. Can anyone advise how to best handle this scenario.

I blow nitro at a higher pressure and it works for me. Just ream it evenly to keep the shavings in one piece. Hope this helps brother.

Use a long screw and screw that into a piece of cloth then run the cloth inside the tube then debur, then just pull the cloth out with the burs.

That is because of the gap created at the tool head to avoid the copper from cracking there and to give a more round finished product, thanks!

Some of these will split 5/16 and 3/8 on one shot attempts . I back off the nut then walk up in a couple shots . no more splits .
