Only a couple of issues with this method. Micro usb will get extremely hot when usb tethering and prolonged use can burn out your port. Also not all phones can have both wireless hotspot and USB tethering active at the same time. Use this method at your own risk. Phone that the USB port burns out on is a paper weight.

I did this for my ps3 back in the day.. I live in the sticks and there was no broadband, but rigged my phone to pc.. pc to ps3 and boom a whopping 2mpg problem was during the day it was so so speeds, but at night I got good speeds... Much better these days now that I have FIOS .. Still in the sticks though in the same place... Couldn't believe Verizon came to my area as no other cable company did..

without messing with router software: connect the phone hotspot using a cable to your pc. bridge the connection to an ethernet cable and connect it to whatever you want.

Idk in the U.S but where I live your phone controls that, no the ISP, I have a prepaid plan so if I use all my MB that's it but the company I use have a "unlimited data from 10 pm to 6 am" thing and I use that to download games, though the day the multiplayer games doesn't consume that much if you don't use Texture Streaming of course.

Could you potentially use a smartwatch instead of a phone? Most smartwatches don’t have a port besides the charging port, but this charging port can be used to transfer data. You will need to find a guide on how to install OpenWRT for your specific router as it varies between brands and models. Installing a third party firmware is inherently risky. It really isn't difficult to do, but ideally you should know some networking terminology or be willing to learn.

The non-pro supports 5ghz also, not sure why you thought it didn't. There are also plenty of routers which support USB based tethering without running 3rd party firmware, such as most all Mikrotik routers.

Would this work with a mifi 8800L mobile router also? I have tried just hooking up the mifi to a router through the USB option before, I got it to work but it wouldn't charge the mifi in the process. Also I couldn't set up dmz or port forward in the router. Im at my wits end with this. I'm trying to get around a type 3 nat and just can't figure it out. There is no easy way to "boost" your AT&T Internet. First, what speeds are you paying for and what are you getting? Run a speed test on a computer that is wired to your gateway. You have to keep in mind that the speeds you can get from AT&T are affected based on how far you are from the central office in your area. In some cases, if your phone line wiring is not great, it can affect your signal, but this probably not too common. We're dealing with a lot of variables and unknowns here so there is no "magic" fix that I can give you.
