Wow, this video came just in time! I'm a beginner and last night I was trying to mix ezdrummer for my track. This video showed me how wrong I was doing things. Instead of routing the drum tracks directly to the buss and from there to master fader, I was routing the tracks to the master fader and also to the buss. After watching this video I find the reasons behind the last night's total disappointment:) Thank you Warren and Pete!

Ok, great. Thank you! Can someone explain if it is possible to go back to instrument track and make changes and then go back to audio and still have all plug-in and effects on channels undisturbed? When I go back to instrument and back to audio, then everything is lost, and I need to make all mixing again.

Very nice presentation Pete. I will mention that working within AD2 is a great way to go too if one gets familiar with and explores all the various FX available to sculpt the kit. I feel one is limiting the power of the plugin by not taking advantage of everything that's available within it. all those FX are blended in thru AD's Master (which isn't really a master but a fader for all the FX).

Good video thanks. Didn't notice but did you leave all the compession/eq from AD2 on the individual kit pieces? I noticed you turned them off for the master fader, but not sure you did for each kit piece? Which means if not, on that preset presumably the kit pieces already had processing from AD. Cheers, and thanks for the video.

One thing I don't get is why he said, that he wanted the raw sound of the kit and then only turned off the fx at the master channel - when routing to individual outputs you are bypassing the Addictive Drums master channel anyway. But all the fx on the individual tracks (eq, compression,...) were NOT turned off and so ended up on the Studio one track channel. So they were anythingbut dry.

Awesome video and lots of info just one question, is there a way to get a fader for the cymbals/or crash? Instead of just the hihat? Because when is about mixing the same EQ applied to the hihat affects the cymbals or crash and the sound becomes “flat instead of excitement or energy “ thanks

Thanks for this, you've packed a lot in, appreciate it. Just got Studio One 4 pro during the sale week Nov 2018, and this vid shows a lot more than just drums, it really lays out all sorts about Studio One practicalities, and stuff about recording/panning and so on, I never knew. It does strike me, how little use is made of stereo in most albums/tracks, and the attention to detail for the drums is making a proper job of it. I once did a mildly decent amount of effort for one track, into the drums alone - a guitarist said he hated the track but could he have a copy of my drums please?! Thanks again, this is the real McCoy.

How do you change it back to midi without loosing any of the plugs that you put on when it was audio? In my overheads the ride cymbals level is to high and needs to brought down, but have to go back into the overheads midi to do so. When I change it back and forth the plugins are not there any more. Great video by the way and really helped a lot.

Excellent Video! Give Tanx! I would like to understand what is happen once you choose to check the "remove Instruments" while using the "Transform Instruments Track" feature. If it's removing the Instruments and I gain therefore more CPU power which is nice, but if I would like to go back and make some changes again (in MIDI) , is it still possible to transform the Audio back to MIDI again? Hmmm, when I transform the audio back to an instrument track, make my edits, and then transform back to audio, I lost all my sends and inserts that were set for the various individual drum pieces (using Studio One 5). I suspect I'd lose automation as well, but I'm not using any in my current project so didn't test this. Any thoughts on how to keep the drum routing intact as I move back and forth between audio and midi?

Hey Pete, thanks for the tutorial! Iearned a lot! But why did you leave out the bus while re-routing?
@MixBetterNowTV
@MixBetterNowTV 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Dominic! I'm glad you liked it :-) I left out the "bus" track from AD2 because it essentially serves no purpose. Its just a placeholder. My whole point was I wanted to mult out each individual drum to its own track so I could approach mixing like I do a normal acoustic drum kit. Since I use a drumbuss for that I just set one up in S1 (or whatever DAW youre in) instead. Hope that helps! :-) - Pete

I used Studio1 and Logic for that for some time, but I liked the Pro Tools way more. So, in Pro Tools you can route your drums directly to Audio tracks. In Studio1 and Logic you must have both Aux tracks and Audio tracks (as you can't set an Instrument as Input for Audio track, so for Kick you would have Kick Aux and Kick Audio). So, there is no mess with that in Pro Tools, like it. But anyway thanks for the video!

Great tutorial...cleaned up a lot of my confusion on certain things. But a question regarding the convert to audio/instrument. Can this process be used to convert audio loops to midi? Why do I ask? Because, often times I will find really great audio drum loops, but I want to spice them up, add in a tom hit or a reverse cymbal or whatever. I'm curious if I can convert audio drum loops to midi, edit and then expand out to individual tracks using this process. Thanks. Looking forward to your reply. And yes I hit the like button.

Hello, great tutorial, thank you, it sounds now more realistic ;) but what's about the -16db "security" level you said in another tuto ? You're at 0dB on the Drums tracks. Do I have to decrease dB level fader on every drums kit on addictive drums before to reach that -16dB level ? Thank you

But can I use the software interface alone to mix the drums, keeping the midi track, without turning them into audio tracks?

What is the idea recording level Addictive Drums should be at coming into Studio One? The reason I ask is that I tried it like you showed and just about every one clipped. When recording if it goes above 0 it clips right? Thank you.

As usual, a great video from Pete. I may be making the move to Studio One soon, so this was quite influential as I use AD in pretty much all of my arrangements. Just one thing; I know that you can convert stereo tracks to mono after the midi to audio transfer, but is there no way of determining this before you commit? In PT, I would set up, for instance, 4 mono aux/audio channels and 2 stereo aux/audio channels for the kit and that way you don't get stereo WAV files on all the tracks...

Hi Warren and Pete, Great videos thanks for the info. I may be being really dumb but when I follow this video everything works except when I transform to audio track the master track turns into a audio track rather than staying a midi track. what am I doing wrong? I can't figure it out. thanks in advance.

Nice starter tutorial, Pete. Thank you! Does AD2 also contain: intros, fills, and outros? I wonder why XLN Audio doesn't test/certify ADN 2 as Studio One compatible? That had me a bit worried until I saw this tutorial.

some if not most of the midi pack samples will have intros, verses, chorus, fills, bridge, and all that good stuff, you can select separately.

Thanks for the great video Pete (and to you Warren for presenting it). So glad that it seems possible to break down and convert midi so easily without having to write complex midi maps or even know much about them. Are these "placeholder tracks" that you demonstrated also midi tracks for the individual instruments or are they something other than this (just a "place holder")? If they are something else, is it possible to just as easily get individual midi instrument tracks aside from the main midi track? Finally, would one be able to make and save copies/duplicates of individual midi tracks?

Hey Lazio! The place holder tracks aren't MIDI tracks... They're essentially acting like auxes or busses. The way that you could get individual MIDI tracks (as opposed to the main MIDI track) would be to print the audio and then use the audio to MIDI function. Lastly, yes, you can save copies and duplicate any midi track :-) Hope that helps! - Pete

Working about 100 hours a week right now...lots of storms in Houston the past couple of months. I've hardly had time to breath, have not had time to mix anything in about 6 or 8 weeks...but I have a rain day tomorrow, might be able to work on a mix, I hope. Great video (as always). Happy to see my two favorite mix engineers working together!

Once you "transform to audio track," you lose all ability to use midi to make more drum sounds. How would I get around this? Or do I just wait to "transform to audio track" when I'm 100% done playing all drum parts on my keyboard? (but even then what if I have to manually edit a drum part I ended up not liking?)

I love Addictive Drums 2, but I exclusively use Pro Tools (12.5 at this time) on PC. I have nothing against Studio One, it's just that I have neither the money to purchase another DAW nor the time to learn another one. That being said, is it possible to do something like this in Pro Tools as well? And if so, would it be possible to record a tutorial video of it? The process looks amazing and would save me beaucoup time. Thanks

Jim Glunt Hey Jim! Although here I'm teaching and working in S1, I too use Pro Tools. You can absolutely run each individual drum out to an audio track or aux, but it's not as quick and easy to specifically go from MIDI to audio as well as the time it takes to set it up. I'm in no way saying one is better than the other, it's just different. The way I'd do it in PT would be to rout each kit piece to an Aux where you'd be then able to apply processing. If you want it as audio you'd have to bus it and print it to audio (as far as I'm aware). Hope that helps! 😊 - Pete

Hi Pete - I'm totally new to Addictive Drums 2 so apologies for my dumb question, but why would anyone chose to convert from midi to audio before the very final render? I thought maybe it's so you can treat the elements with your own effects, but won't all that stuff be lost when you jump back to midi to make pattern changes? This is a great tutorial so thank you very much for taking the time to make it. Mat

I have used live drum loops and have edited them and then recorded guitars and bass. Once in a while, I'd have a kick or tom in a fill or a complete fill that just isn't working as is, so I edit it out and create or import a different fill or just make the beat continue without a fill or with a cymbal crash. If you go from midi to audio, the same situation can appear so you'd need to go back to midi to make the necessary changes. When you'd return the corrected drums to the audio world, the tracks would still be as they were before with all previously made changes. I have had Addicted Drums on my PC for years and never used them. I am about to start. I am not impressed with any cymbals that I have heard from any of these types of programs and I notice that they are very low in the mix here, but I like the results in this video that came from removing all of the program effects and converting dry drums to be treated in the DAW. The only time that I have been impressed with the cymbals is when I've seen these programs used with E drums because the attack on the cymbals better matches the overall drum performance.

Hello Warren and Pete! I am an happy AD2 user, and this video is soooo useful! Just a question for Pete: I didn't clearly understand from the video...when you mix drums, do you also EQ, compress also the singles kitpieces, or only the drum bus channel, as shown?
