Hello everyone! Bit of a crisis at Carter Auto Restyling headquarters this week. Another derelict old heap is being dropped off and it's missing several critical bodypanels. In order to keep local law enforcement happy I am forced to recomission junk bodypanels from the Chicken Truck and 1948 GMC.

I have made a few interesting exhibits for the archeologists over the years, but these are my favourite type of repairs, all the satisfaction of repairing and rebuilding without all the fiddling around with finishing for paint, coat of primer and it's all new. Turns out it's even better watching someone else is doing it..

I have to make a comment, but first I want to preface it by saying the comments are meant only in the very most wholesome context. When you were wrestling with those fenders on the floor, I found it to be quite intimate. Again, I mean this in only the most wholesome way. It illustrates that one must get on the level of the panel to be repaired, rather than standing by or looming over the work - you must be one with the panel. That is the true inner meaning I found during those moments when you were literally caring for those fenders. And when you got the chicken to help with the explanations, my heart was flooded with warmth as I eagerly listened to those instructions. This video was a truly deep experience, and I think my philosophies are very much in line with yours. I took my car to a couple of car shows, but I sensed that the owners of the cars with shiny straight panels were made a little uncomfortable by my car, and maybe me standing there in my overalls.

This was a cool episode because as you said there are several ways of repairing these cars and sometimes they get the treatment like the one you showed us with great skill. There is nothing wrong with what you did. Many people have made a living at it and if done with your skill level will last a long time. My wife's car had the same treatment done when she clipped a dumpster with the passenger side rear quarter panel. It looked great for a couple of years until she hit a telephone pole with the same side and some product came off. Guess what, I never fixed it and she has not hit a pole again. So there. You have some mad skills with that trowel and product as well as lead. I am glad I found your channel. Cheers and see you on the next one.

Thank you! The carriage bolt trick is definitely not legit, but I have seen a few old "how to" articles from the 1950s and 60s where it was used to join in patch panels and the seams smeared over with lead. Kind of the old school equivalent of using pop rivets and bondo to install patch panels

You have to keep them guessing. The restomods are going to drive them nuts. When the first Neanderthal skeleton was found and reassembled it was hunched over so we all think cavemen were hunched over. Now we have bunches of skeletons with normal posture. It was later found that the first one was super old and had Osteoporosis but we still represent them that way. I don't know what that means. Thank you for your time.

Carchaeology is a fascinating passtime. Digging through old repairs givers you a sense of the life of the vehicle and seeing how things were done and with what medium back in the day.....and whether they were done by a bodyman or a complete novice (or someone who was both). Scott (CWM) came across something recently on a vehicle he was giving a quick titivate for someone else and you could see the layers of different types of plastic filler and from their colour and form, Scott was able to date the decade of each repair. Fascinating stuff for those of us interested in that sort of thing. I've said it many times before and I will say it again - your WGAF repairs still look better than what comes out of modern panel shops....well, at least down here anyway! Seeing you belt a panel, look at it a bit and then seemingly belt it again at random and have it straighten back out....mate, it's a gift of yours that I admire greatly and thoroughly enjoy watching. Just wish I could do the same myself! Don't worry about Uncle Tony - he's too busy knocking on the door of an ex-pat of my wee country and having a look at this or that vehicle up on a hoist! Some of the basket cases they've come across make me cringe - things that look so pretty up top but have painted cardboard frames, missing metal or work that an apprentice on his first day would not even consider good enough underneath. Some of the vehicles definitely weren't even safe to drive and all the ones I've seen would never pass an inspection in this country with the issues they had. It certainly put me off buying one and importing it without having someone whose expertise I trusted looking it over first. I'm just glad to see there are still some genuine panelbeaters and bodymen out there as well as all the cowboys, mate......and a hack you certainly are not! All the best.
