I have been researching colour theory and it has transformed my approach to abstract art.
It’s also improved my confidence and ability to make decisions with more predictable results.
This is a full process video.
You will need red, yellow, blue, black and white acrylic paint. Sturdy paper (like cartridge, watercolour or canvas) and paintbrushes.
I have sped up 2.5 times due to time taken to create the painting.
I’m over the moon and hope to keep learning and sharing with you.
I hope you enjoy.

It is such fun to study colour and colour theory. The impressionists were fabulous and I like to study their work and pick out colours that I want to translate into my work. I love that they used complementary colours to mix their greys and blacks and to give their shadows a shimmer. Monet's Haystack series is fabulous to study for his way of representing darks. Ack, sorry, I could waffle on about colour all day. Enjoy your colour explorations and I look forward to seeing where you go with it! :)

Waffle on kari!!!!!!!! Please!!!!!!! The info in your comment is so helpful to me, you’ve no idea!! It’s really hard as a self taught knowing which information paths to follow. I’m definitely going to look at monet haystack series as I want to learn it all!!!! I’m currently trying to get the saturation effects for depth kinda reinforced. I do see it now when I’m painting but want it to become more subconscious. 😁

Aw apple, thank you. I’m enjoying this phase I’m in just now. The ideas are flowing and I’m learning. I need new knowledge to take to the gel plate as my enthusiasm was waning….always a sign it’s time to make the effort to progress!!!! I hope you’re well and enjoying your art.

Really Kirsten 🥳 That was a big party for my eyes! So much development, so many turns. As if you were weaving colors and growing through the process. I could follow you discovering the qualities of each color by putting them in new places. For me your artwork is now an invitation to go wandering through your landscape without getting lost, which I appreciate very much 🤗. To read that you are over the moon is a big pleasure for me too. Well done my dear . Xo Britta

Hi dear Britta, this is so good to hear from you!!! I think the colour saturations are helping with the foreground background (as we discussed previously) a bit. I’ve been looking that up too. It’s probably what led me to the colour saturation theory actually 🤔 I’ve been a bit crazy with my painting of late but I appreciate having ideas and knowledge to work with…nothing worse than no ideas!!!! Which is why I’ve stepped back from the gel plate a bit. I don’t want to repeat stuff I’ve done before…I want to try new things or a more knowledgeable version of what I’ve done before. I think this time painting is helping!!! 😁🥰❤️🥳❤️

@@quirkyqueens Oh, I appreciate your enthusiasm Kirsten 🥰and that´s perfectly okay with me. I can always watch earlier Gel Plate tutorials that you made, when I have questions. (I actually did last night 🤣) I LOVE your love for experiments. You just HAVE to go on where art leads you 🤩 - and of course I love to keep company along your way . Love you, Britta 😘

How interesting to see and hear. Loved your recent painting on IG; and seeing how you go about it is so enjoyable and interesting. I love how this changed as it progressed. Lots of interest in the design, but also places in the painting for the eye to rest too; which is brilliant. Love the idea of copying a master work with just black and white. Thanks!

It’s actually quite hard Kathy. I watched a few draftsmen podcasts. They were talking about it. You’ve probably watched them, if not I do recommend them. Saturns son was one I did, so little light in that one!!!! I painted paper black first as I found adding the white made me look more thoughtfully at it.

Hi Christine, sorry for the late reply. Ah yes… the “they”!!!! The big mysterious invisible ruling corporation that we try to obey but their instructions are somewhat vague 🤨🤔🤣 I’ve found myself checking black and white photos of my painting progress far too much!!! One day I’m hoping to see value without checking…maybe 🤞🏻😂
