One of the most surprising catches of my life was when i tossed a piece of nightcrawler to catch some bait and a 36 inch brown trout grabbed it. I was only using 4 pound test, no net, took me 30 minutes to get it in. Unfortunately, i caught its gills and it blead out, but made for a good meal that night.

This is why I tend to use 12lb at the lowest, regardless of what I'm fishing for. Tiring out fish is bad for the fish, many studies show this. Even if they survive, exhausting them fucks up their immune system for many days/weeks afterwards, making them prone to diseases and death. Everyone should make it a priority to land the fish as quick as possible, not let it fight and wear itself out, unhook it and release as quick as possible.

@rdizzy1 I fish mostly smaller bodies of water, streams and resivours. So 12 pound test doesn't work in these places. If I was in Texas I use minimum of 15 pound for sure, but in these parts a 5 pound fish is huge. So 4 or 6 pound test is much better. Fly fishing even smaller at times. Most fish up in the mountains average about 1 to 2 pounds. But if ya catch 10 a day, it's still fun

@@clarklindquist8137 The fish do not give a sht what test you use, believe me. No matter what other people say. The fish are not seeing the line and ignoring the bait unless you are using 50lb mono or something. I have trout fished with 20lb line many times. No need to use drag.

Now, I’m nowhere in your league, Nick, but I just caught my pb catfish! I’d reel in, but it kept pulling line. I tightened drag 3 times in our fight! Finally landed him 😊 I don’t have a scale, but this fat fish was 32” long. Felt SO good to land him! I even quoted you upon the release “See you later, buddy!”

Another Great Video! Keep up the good work! That triple digit catfish will come eventually! In Australia, our mystical 100 pound catfish is a 1 meter (3.3ft) Murry Cod. Rare to catch any bigger than 80cm (2.6ft). Mystical fish though.
