Even some video games are not immune to this issue. Anyone who's played games like Dragons Dogma knows that anytime you tried to walk ANYWHERE in the open world, you were either condemning yourself to a boring 30+ minutes of walking anywhere, or would inevitably assaulted by creatures. The outside world is a scary place, man

In my campaign we ended up having to journey across the country; and our game is pretty realistic with most magic being outlawed, so we were traveling by horse and cart. Our DM did an excellent job of making a variety of towns along the way (including one we chose to condemn to an infinite time loop because we refused to pay the price an evil force demanded) but also a lot of atmosphere while we were traveling that incited roleplaying and turning to each other for our collective strengths. It was amazing! As a newer DM, I struggle deeply to make traveling of that caliber and not have my players end up like this lol

2:42 that reminds of the time when my Orc Grungar and Living Armor buddy (party member, who was a cleric, LA for short) walked around the forrest which was protected by the God of the hunt, i asked LA to cook some deer. He found 1, casted a spell (forgor name) which can teleport a creature in a random spot and back. The first time it got teleported it got to the god of strenght's gates, got back and charged at us, and LA immediatly teleported it to another spot and got teleported to one of God of War's palaces, hit the gym and the Deer came back standing 60 meters tall. Me being a dumb orc gave it an apple, managed to succed on charisma check, the Deer leaned in for a bite and stepped back, we left IMMEDIATLY. We created a monster, a God Of DEER...which will probably destroy the forrest, aswell as the god of the hunt

I'm running a pirate campaign and we do a lot of time skips to sail from place to place. They have a cook NPC on board and they use their share of the treasure to buy food materials. The players are incentivized to find enough treasure regularly to split among themselves and their NPCs to allows them to keep the boat up and running. It's a resource management minigame that plays out in the background, gotta make sure it doesn't overlap the plot too much, unless they start running low. Then the madness and scurvy become a problem and the sirens see them as easy prey.

True wizard strats: Need food? Cast fireball on a pond, the conclusive blast will kill/stun the fish and you can pick them up. Need shelter? Find a clearing, if no clearing can be found, cast fireball. You have a clearing. Need supplies to build a shelter? Fireball the base of a big tree. Need fire? Collect the sticks from the tree you blasted, and then... you guessed it. Cast produce flame.
