Worst thing that ever happened to me was with Strixhaven: two senior students were demonstrating their abilities to impress the freshmen, and one of the players just went, "I bet he's the leader of an undead cult in the school." Nothing dangerous or ominous had even happened yet, and the only thing about the student that had been revealed was that he was very confident. And yet, for all practical purposes, the senior student in question was, in fact, leading a vampire cult.

My response would've been: Oh right, since you are a wizard and therefore strictly bound to formulas/incantations, your incomprehensible blargh-gibberish has nothing to do with what that spell requires you to say. So you either now say the correct verbal component (which lets this spell be identifiable by other wizards) or the spell fails :)

@scribesorcerer49672 жыл бұрын
@@faselfasel2864 That would lessen the ability to actually distract someone because certain sentences wouldn’t work. @faselfasel28642 жыл бұрын
@@scribesorcerer4967 It wouldnt. Vicious mockery is strictly a bard spell and their verbal components would fall under a completely different casting paradigm. Silvery barbs on the other hand can be used by bards, sorcerers and wizards so that would make identifying the spell harder for people not of the same spellcasting class. (At least at my table). For all you players that are like Wizard™, any spell that has any components (except if it would be just Material, but I don't think those exist) will be recognisable as magic, and might even be recognised for which it is by a spellcaster. Casting spells isn't like holding a conversation, it's like "commanding the weave". Imagine those 'echo' like effects you can use with recordings. The solutions to your troubles is subtle spell, even a caster won't recognise that someone casts silence where he is until he tries speaking and the words won't come out. Subtle spell is good, but since dm's often ignore spellcasting interactions on normal people, normal spells are almost ruled like subtle spell.
@JustaSoothingVoice2 жыл бұрын
Im going to add that probably a Bard with a successful performance+stealth check can also cast a spell secretly as they can perform the somatic components as the movements they do to play and instrument, while the verbal components can be substituted for the sounds the instrument makes and instruments can be used as spell focus for them.

I told her she could choose any spells marked as official within the restrictions of the subclass -- so anything not homebrew or Unearthed Arcana. Rather than just handwave Silvery Barbs as a 2nd level spell, I would have found some way for the other characters to legitimately counter it. Then again, I have never minded if my players make playthings of the antagonists I put against them. In fact I tend to reward them for finding novel ways of thwarting my plans. But I also pay attention, and I have the enemies pay attention as well. It becomes an arms race that quickly becomes very dramatic and suspenseful. I think one of my proudest moments as a DM was when my Barbarian player told my Wizard player during a long rest "You probably shouldn't prepare fireball again. You've been using it a lot lately. @@rage_squid9641You're thinking that Wizard's spell-learning lore is the same as every other caster. You can't have endless sweeps of songs that sound exactly the same, y'know?
@Noobie2k7 Жыл бұрын
The way I see Silvery Barbs is that the verbal component is something actively attempting to distract the target, so it'd be quite obvious if you were using it on someone, and just as obvious you were interfering in another persons duel if you then actively try to distract one of the people in it. The thing about spellcasting is that it is always clear you're trying to cast a spell, that's why metamagic's like Subtle Spell or psionic spell effects exist that remove verbal and somatic components. You can't just try to roleplay that you're trying to be sneaky at casting a spell and expect it to fly.

A Prinny On Break No, but the act of casting is still apparent in your voice. The way the word is carried, how the weave shifts around the place to accommodate the casting and how you clearly looked at the fight and manipulated someone you had to look at, who directly a you spoke then without reason missed.
