When I was young and dumb I was fiberglassing the bottom of boat as it sat. Just like a hole in one a pea sized blob of resin made it between my hat and safety glasses. Left eye. Highly suggest you not try that. 2 days later looked like Mike Tyson took a running start and bare knuckle punched 👊 in the eye. Almost lost it.

Looking good! Really happy for your future self that you're designing the tank to be extractable without cutting it into pieces. One of the biggest lessons we've learned (sounds like you know it too) in the course of owning a couple boats, and being around a ton of boats, is that everything will break eventually, and if you build it into the boat permanently without possibility of being serviced, you'll be cussing up a storm some day in the future.

Those quarter berths are kind of claustrophobic. You could open up a big opening into the new walls you just installed. For privacy I would make a sliding foam panel with a few sliding tracks to close off the area if the people using the area wish to do so, The cost and time would be minimal. You would also be able to pass items into those areas like cockpit cushions.

One idea regarding the floor hight inside the dog house is to have two heights, ie a step. The space under the step Could be a place to store small items för guests. Like a glove compartment. Then Matt can strand tall in the lower part.

A small 200mm step in the 'wall' so you have foot rest when seated at a table in bad weather etc, no kids dangling leg feel, and minimal encroachment into cabins.

Great idea having the tank low down and accessible if needed..with the baffle plates on a tank I made I added a few holes using a swaging tool along the top about 1/2 inch to 1 inch down so that when filling up with diesel from the fishing boat docks that have high flow pumps I didn't have a problem with blow back/fuel lock. My breather pipe was fine on normal car size pump but the delivery on some of the more industrial size was a bit much.

Matt, I am 6ft and my current yacht only has 6ft headroom under the companionway hatch! 5ft 11 in the saloon it is a pain in the neck if you see what I mean? you are going to live on this beauty , just saying. I also spent 5 years building my house from scratch. planning your systems like water, drains ,heating, wiring doors windows etc etc is stimulating and I commend you for sharing this project with us all and having people comment on it all.🦆🦆

I’m so glad you’re going with an aluminium fuel tank Matt. Tally Ho had a disaster with their initial, plastic tank. I was just reading about regen props for charging and they were saying that regeneration with standard props on boats are inefficient compared to dedicated regen legs, BUT this inefficiency is negated with variable pitch props on high end hybrid diesel/electric motors. It will be fascinating to see and hear your installation of all that.

Awesome episode as always, thank you! One pointer re the fuel pipes is to make them of of different ”depth”, so that e.g. a pipe feeding a heater is shallower than the one feeding the generator. But you have probably already thought of that. 😂

Just a wild idea to ameliorate the height of the companionway floor vs. Bench height: Perhaps the benches would be more comfortable to sit on with the addition of flush fitting, bottom hinged footrests. That would get around the dangling legs problem that high seating brings, allowing you to brace yourselves with your feet as is the case with more conventionally proportioned seating. Because they could be latched up and flush when not in use, they’d not present any obstruction or loss of width to the companionway. Anyhow, it was just an idle thought. Really enjoyed the video and what you’re doing, the soundtrack was great. I’d love to get your playlist, it’d go well with the vibe in my workshop. Cheers, R. 😎👍🍻

this is starting to look really good! Have you considered maybe adding some small vents to the walls you installed, to have some air circulating into the quarter berths. You could use small round vents, which would not look too intrusive. Great work so far, really amazing!

I can't keep the picture of everything in my mind. But it would be cool to have two tanks, one on each side so you can maintain trim. But I know there are tons of constraints in design. Boat layout is always a compromise of competing goals.

For the Pilot house floor, perhaps you could have raised sections along the sides, acting as steps, the full height floor sitting in between. As this floor may need to removable to allow full engine room access, the sections could integrated into the floor rather than the walls. It seems the inspector is sitting on her paws at present, oberserving developments but evaluations paused, and opinions reserved.

If you have an opportunity to include an extra inlet and outlet for fuel polishing- do it. Great to be able to polish your fuel when you inevitably get water and or dirty fuel in a remote location. We picked up bad fuel in the Australs and had no way to polish in situ. We now have built in fuel polishing.

Hi Mat, have you thought about spreading the weight over the length and both sides of the boat? It seams to be lot of weight in the back. Maybe you could use some flexible tube tanks for the fuel in other front parts of the boat?

Great update! I like that scanning app a lot too. IMHO hybrid is the way to go as it gives you a margin of safety out in the open ocean if you become becalmed or you just need to motor a long way for whatever reason, like an emergency of some kind. All electric is fine for day trippers and marina queens... 🤣 I'm sure that the 'inspector' will approve this as well....😁

The fuel tank looks great, with the sump for fuel pick up. I would suggest that you add a 1/4 inch line for stripping the tank of water, the suction pick up should be lower than the fuel suctions. All fuel has some water in it and tanks will condensate internally. Having a stripping line allows you to pull the water out of the tank.

Awesome work with the Lidar. It's really cool to see you getting into it. A tip for the fuel tank is to chamfer the corners of the tank. Instead of a single 90deg fold, make two 45 bends. This significantly reduces the bending stresses at the change in direction. Ideally its a sphere, cylinder with domed ends is next best. Boxes are the "worst". Imagine blowing up the tank with air into a balloon and all the flat sides bulge out. They don't bulge at the corners and the result is a stress concentration. Square tanks will often crack along the welds at these edges.

This and have the fuel intake hose installed in a way that allows fuel to be sucked in most normal boat inclination. With a tank that big, you can have like 10 gallons inside and due to boat tilt you may not have fuel at the spot where the fuel line is.

I love your creativity. this is the best build video on You Tube. I feel sitting with legs dangling is uncomfortable. Maybe some fold down foot rests while sitting and fold them up while walking about the boat. It looks like even with one side folded down you would still be able to walk through the isle without too much trouble. you could build them out of foam and leave a gap at the wall side pivot so when you fold them up the sand falls to the floor. A quick sweep or vacuum and the place is clean.

Good to the see the LIDAR/photogrammetry being used, I have been developing this software for the last, too long (18 years). Nice to see it go from a very expensive technology ($200k scanner) to the mobile phone. Good job you had not painted the interior when you scanned it probably would have gotten very upset everything white. When you do the CAD modelling it is a good idea to model the access opening including the swing of the hatches. This ensure you can get through the opening without taking doors off etc. Keep up the good work.

I worked with a survey of the engine room of HMS Belfast (historic battleship moored on the Thames). Not a straight pipe on the house, things all over the place, ship surveys are hard work everything crammed in.

You may want to check with US Coast Guard regulations for tankage on boats for higher. I think you may want to add a few more baffles. I forget the specs but they are a great source and they have well researched the issues. It’s a lot of fuel to slush around and if you’re going with aluminum use 5086 Marine grade or 316 stainless steel they both do well with diesel again a beautiful job you’re doing believe you’re doing a wonderful job though

I think head space would be nice as you walk thru from the cockpit to the salon. If the height of the benches is too tall, how about some fold down steps/footrests. They would be normally in the up position (spring loaded?) out of the way and you would toe the step down and step up onto the bench. When you lift your foot off of the step it would fold up and out of the way. If you're sitting on the bench facing inwards you could use the folded down step as a footrest. Lot of options. Do a 6" step up then you can leave the floor low. Otherwise everyone will be like Edith Ann!! (Google it or ask your folks!) Ideas on the tanks... Include baffles in both directions. Lower frothing that way. Also design a low sump area were dirt can settle in with a drain valve. We make those racos last do mich long.

Quick comment on bunks. If the lip that retains the mattress is high enough to be flush with the top of the mattress, it can be a shin killer when you crawl in. The mattress sinks down under the weight of your knee, and your shin impacts the lip.

Do tanks have to be made of steel or can they made from fibreglass? I'm not entirely sure of the of the structural integrity of these things but it seems that all tanks are made of steel that eventually corrode and have to be replaced. Or, can a tank be structured into the boat using a non corrosive material that will last forever? Anyhow, Duracell taking on different shapes now very quickly each week;)) Very exciting stuff!! Thank God you are doing a hybrid system. I would have gone ad nauseam if you said totally electric. Range is just still a problem and HP for those systems for the most part. The step up rails or fold up rails for the setees others describe seem like an ideal solution. Hmm fiberglass projects seem to be running out 🤪

Leave the interior passageway deck where it is and consider small “steps” attached to the exterior of the quarterdeck walls which will allow the diminutive folks ability to boost themselves up if need be …. They could be made smooth and tapered fire and aft so as not to be “knee knockers”

I vote for lowering the bench height so it is comfortable to get on to and lower the quarter berth ceiling by 6 to 8 inches.. There is more time spent in the dog house on benches than sleeping in the quarter berth. The quarter berth will spend most of its life as storage anyway.

Build an ergonomic curb on either side, shape it so it works well with the narrowed isle/hallway. It doesn't have to be much either, even just a robust lip, rather than a "curb" might work.
