Using other hot foils in the Gemini FoilPress

I experimented using different brands of Hot Stamp foil: ToDo hot foil, Spellbinder glimmer hot foil, (Anna Griffin) Couture Creations Go Press & Foil against the Crafter's companion paper foil in a stamp & foil die and a cut & foil butterfly die.
(*update* I was able to get the other butterflies lined up and re- foiled them at medium heat for 45 seconds with the other brands. Check the Fairy video.)

I purchased a pack of 9 - 3" rolls of hot foil from Ebay seller for like $20. I struggled to get the foil to completely adhere - and after watching this video, I think I will try hotter temp for a shorter time. I also didn't know about the double metal shims for cutting the hot foil cut stamps. I have the Gemini foil press - and after about 15 minute of use, I noticed the plate was warping. However, after letting it sit for a while, it straightened itself out - so maybe it was just too hot. I was leaving it plugged in between tries. Anyway, thank you for your tutorial - I learned a lot and will now go back and try that foil again. It is a great buy, from a US seller so it arrives quickly. Anything that offers a savings is a win in this art room :)

Hi I have had to work this out much like yourself. I have noticed that if I take it out and test if it is transferred whilst it is still warm it does lift but if you put it aside and wait until it is very cool it will have shrunk minimally which means it is attached. I hope this helps and if it helps. But definitely leaving it to cool after it has gone through the gemini is what is needed most. Happy foiling x

Maybe that's why they want you to put the metal shim down first and then the stamp and cut die. The metal shim probably helps to transfer the heat. Just a thought. I love this system. It is definitely at the top of my wish list.

I am at 31 minutes into yours and this does seem to be the case!! I asked yana smacula....of course, her demo is with Spellbinders and she did not want to deviate...which I fully understand but when it comes to my pennies I want them to stretch as far as they can! Go to HSN, pull up the Presentation video on the CC Foil Press page where Sara shows how to use it during the launch. She used the Happy Birthday die, a regular die that I have which was for sale on the program, cut a die cut which she foiled with the fancy silver foil. I have the Couture Creations machine and I was amazed that she could do this.

I don't even use it because I could never get the glitter paper to go through without bunching up and the carrier sheet being ruined. Hi!! Unfortunately I already bought the Glimmer Hot foil System. I’m trying to do some projects on cotton paper and the results are horrible. I get foil all over the paper. Have you ever had that problems with the Gemini? I watched a few tutorials for the Glimmer and but they were all sponsored.

Lower your pressure with less shims and cut down your foil to size around your die. Also try not to over heat. It takes practice with all hot foiling systems.

Nancy Stamps Thank you for replying so fast! The Glimmer only have one set of heat and time. I tried putting the die and only leaving it for 10 seconds, 15 seconds, and the results were horrendous. My paper is about 350gsm, but I also tried it with linen paper, metallic finish, cheap paper. 😭It was a hot mess! If I had know, I would’ve bought the Gemini.

Yes, you can foil and cut or cut and foil. I had better result if I foiled first and then cut, sometimes a couple of passes or longer heat made them come out better.

Couture creations, ToDo, & Spellbinders Glimmer foil is what you can search for. Scrapbooking made simplest has some and so does Simon Says stamp. Make sure your search for "hot foil".

I was able to get the non-branded hot foil to work. 45 sec on medium heat using a Spellbinders stamp press die. The one remaining issue I have is that no matter how I try, I can't keep the die aligned with the cardstock. I am trying to center a mask die on a 4x4 card. Once I put the foil on the die and then lay down the card, I can't see if it is aligned. Would anyone happen to have a trick for keeping them aligned? I watch so many videos and half the time the die is crooked on the platform - but also, they are not using a finished card - just cardstock. Any advice is most appreciated. Thank you!!

yes, you need to buy the adapter plate though because the opening to the regular gemini has 3 sensors and the FoilPress onloy triggers two, so the adapter will trigger all 3 to turn the full size gemini on.

If you watch the HSN demo, Sara actually foiled a die cut (ordinary die/ CC Happy Birthday). I know you can foil the Cut/Foil Stamps. She foiled the pre-cut die cut and it covered entirely. I didn't know you could do that....

Are you sure it wasn't a foil stamp die? Only the outline will foil on a regular die. The foil stamp dies are made specifically for foiling, not cutting. I have the new foil stamp dies ordered. I'll demonstrate and you can tell me if it's the same one.

Nancy you aren’t supposed to keep the foil press plugged in - you are to pull it away from the base between using - according to the designer Leeann Chivers of Crafter’s Companion it shortens the life of the machine - she has a video on Facebook Crafter’s Companion

What a disappointment on the glimmer foil from Spellbinders. Just when I thought how can they possibly be so different and you showed me differently. I do not have any of the pressing machines yet but so far I like this one. How does it compare price wise to the Go Press and Foil machine? Maybe the Glimmer foil will work with the old school techniques with double sided adhesive. I played with the G-P-F foil and the Minc foil and they both worked excellent this way Maybe you can do this to use the negatives from your butterfly. Die cut a butterfly from any double sided adhesive, peel off one side, line up the negative, run through die cut machine to adhere it well to the adhesive. When you peel of the cover sheet there will be exposed adhesive which you can either double foil or adding glitter. Peel off the back adhesive and stick where ever. Not my original idea. I saw it on Scrapbooking Made Simple. I believe it was video #142

I got the othersfoil to work with heat setting on medium for 45 seconds and I was able to get the waste foil to stick using a sandwich of foil, paper, 2 shims, magnetic shim and top plate. Check out my Gemini Foil Press playlist for all the fun videos. :)

Legolas (love the name) if you have spellbinders, try the spellbinders glimmer machine. Yes, all wafer thin dies will work and yes all hot foil machine foils will work. I have done a couple of videos, so take a look and then decide. Also Yana Smakula did a few nice videos with the Spellbinders glimmer machine.

I was following the directions for Crafters companion foil. But the manual is only for crafters companion foil. I am using other brands of foil. They aren't the same as crafters companion foil. They took a higher heat and longer time to adhere. ToDo foil, Couture Creations foil and Spellbinders foil.
