Thank you! I had always wondered about that ruling and it was beautifully and logically explained. I am so thankful to hear that the extreme view is over nitpicking the concept as if the more strict you are the holier-than-thou you are. I mean no disrespect in that comment as I have asked non-Christian and non-Muslim friends about their increasing strictness in rules. This was the most clear spoken and logical explanation i have ever heard. To sound a bit silly this made my heart happy. Even my own religion has rules that when you question them meaning what is the origin of the rule you are basically told "Just because it is," which is not intellectually satisfying. This was wonderful and thank you both for this enlightening video.

What a great expanation! I grew up believing that nail polish was a deal breaker and I made peace with it eventually. But I grew up in a Muslim majority country. My 7 year old daughter isn’t growing up in a Muslim majority country and she feels very strongly about nail polish. Personally I'd rather stay on the safe side...if praying with nail polish is risky and not completely known to be halal or haram then it's better to just avoid it. Imagine praying all your life with nail polish on then finding out on yaumul qiyamah that your prayers weren't valid. It's just nail polish, it's not necessary to life lmao. Just wait until your monthly visitor then you can paint your nails all you want.

If you do something without intention of it being wrong genuinely, and you come to that decision using reason, then you would not be held to account by that. Also it is a well known thing that doubt does not override certainty, ie, you shouldn’t assume something is haram if there is nothing to definitely imply it is

Faryal Wasti well you have to understand that nailpolish creates a barrier on your nails, which means water won’t reach them. And if water doesn’t reach, then your wudhu is incomplete, which means your prayer won’t be accepted. So it’s not that it makes your prayer invalid, but your WUDHU

i THINK i get his point-- people say you cant wear nail polish because its not water permeable, but now that there are such water permeable formulas nail polishes people say wearing nail polish is over accesorizing one's self. so here is the question to those people ; then why is henna allowed? henna is also colouring the nails.
@IzuraAs
@IzuraAs 10 жыл бұрын
Salam. The comparison of henna and nail polish just isnt right even when both "colour" your nail because of their state. It is sunnah for women to wear henna. Henna is a colour stain. You apply henna, after it dried, wash it away & you're left with the colour stain. Nail polish isnt stain, it doesnt dissapear when wash with water. Instead the layer that you apply, dries and stick to your nail. To remove, you need a remover or peel it off.

Instinct always told me that it's the symbolic ritual of making ablution that is important. At the end of it all it's only Allah who can judge us ad in this Dunya I will make my own reasonable decisions based on sound explanations from scholars and know that Allah leads me on the path. Unless you are a scholar you have no right to give fatwa and I see a lot of those in the comments who speak or parrot what they have heard in their lives without giving credit to the scholar who is on this video. I will go with this scholar as it is the same as my instincts. Don't be nit picky. I'm a convert and don't have the culture piece to mislead me so I will go with what I learn and I like what this scholar has to say. All I have to say is I am minding my own business and I would appreciate those who don't mind mine as it's not yours to mind. Thank you for your cooperation. 😊

@@Azura-adamson Thank you for your comment and your warning but I think the point is that there are some who leave Islam or do not want to enter Islam for something as nail polish. I would rather see those people follow all other important parts (5 pillars) than to worry about if they should take off their nail polish. No one on this earth is free of sins so don't judge others because they sin differently than you. It's up to Allah to judge and if nail polish is really an issue I'm sure Allah will guide them to that decision in due time. First, you have to keep the Muslims from leaving or invite non-Muslims into Islam before you scare them away. In addition, nail polish is not specifically spoken about in the Qur'an nor the Hadith and we have received the guidance from scholars, which tells me that one scholar may interpret it differently than another as demonstrated in this video. Everyone is entitled to make their own decisions and inferring that wearing nail polish will invalidate wudu is your human opinion. Who knows, at the end we may have been violating the Qur'an by being extreme in religion if we continue to be so. This I don't want to do, as this fact is in the Qur'an. I will pray always for all of my Sisters and Brothers of Islam and may Allah guide us all, Ameen. 🙏

I think the reason why the prayer is "not valued" Allah knows best, is because nail polish is not hygienic; i work in the hospital and we are not allowed to wear nail polish because the bacteria underneath the nail cant cleaned off.. if you dont believe me; there is a test which we do sometimes in the hospital to check if we scrubed the hands right.. after the scrubbing we need to put our hands in a redlight box which shows the bacteria and if u have nail polish on it showed that the nails are still with bacterias no matter how much you wash or scrub the hands... I think it is more about the fact that anyone can say what they want, they can deem things permissible or non permissible but only Allah knows the truth. Water is supposed to reach our nails; that much is known. But there has never been anything outlined directly in any scripture to speak about nail polish. So for some it’s better to be cautious than take a risk, and find out on the day of judgment that your prayers have been exempt because your ablution wasn’t done correctly - because of something as silly as nail polish. It’s a really big thing for me because I am currently wearing nail polish as I type, I am Muslim and I completely get both sides. It’s a decision we sisters have to make on our own, because when we stand in front of Him, we will be on our own. May Allah swt make it easy on us to stay on the right path and do things that please Him.

I wish that Islamic scholars as well as people go back and rethink 99% of the old interpretaions. Sadly people tend to protect and work by the interpretations more than the original texts. I have been working on so many issues related to women's adornment in Islam for my Phd theses and I was horrified when I discovered that 99% of the rules we grew up with are all interpretations that really conflicted with/or exagerated the origional text. Islam is a releagion for all ages, so please be more felxable and leave some room for interpretation so the later generation will never give up on Islam. One of the conditions of tahaarah (purification) being valid is that the water must touch the skin. If there is any barrier such as grease, paint, wax or glue that prevents water reaching the skin, then the tahaarah is not valid and prayers offered in that case are not valid. _ The evidence for that is the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him): “If you find water, then let it touch your skin, for that is good.” Narrated by Abu Dawood (332); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood. _ Imam al-Shaafa’i (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: If there is on him any mastic or anything thick that will prevent the water from reaching the skin, his washing of that part for wudoo’ is not valid, unless he removes it or removes enough so that he knows that there is no barrier to the water touching the skin. End quote. Al-Umm (1/44).

@moonera6130
@moonera6130 4 жыл бұрын
@RAIMA CHOWDHURY they don't have similar purpose. Wearing socks is narrated because the prophet did it. Theres no narrations to say that the women or wives of the prophet wore nail polish and did wudu over it. This was only done with henna. You know because we live in such different times then the Prophet (saw) we have to turn to scholars to get a ruling. The Female Companions of the Prophet (saw) never wore nail polish so they never had this problem. So we turn to scholars to tell us the ruling. The ruling is that we can wear nail polish no problem in that but the problem is the water needs to hit the nail. Nail polish is like paint. To get to the wall you must take off the paint. Same with nail polish to get to the nail you must take off the nail polish. Doing wudu isn't about outward cleanliness, it is about the spiritual cleanliness. Even with wiping over the socks, there are many rules and regulations that come with it. We can't just simply wipe, there's a whole list of rulings that come with it. So it can't be compared to nail polish Moreover, Nail polish is an ornament. Therefore, like all other ornaments, it cannot be worn in public in the presence of the opposite gender (men). A woman can only have it in front of her husband, children, and all other women or men who are her mahrams (those she can never marry, like her father, uncle, etc.). If a woman really wants to put nail polish and go out, then she should cover her hands with gloves. This is very different to wiping over the socks, women shouldnt even be wearing it out, let alone doing mas'ah over it Just to be safe, wear henna :)

Assalamualaikum.. This is a very interesting topic and I have a curiosity. I know this comes back to individuals but it was mentioned in this video that we are allowed to just wipe our feet or like we all know we are allowed to do dry wudhu. So my question is... if we do just wipe or if we do dry wudhu then that means there is no water going thru our skins hence nothing is going thru our nails. Or if we wash our hands and only wipe our feet because we have socks on... how can our toe nails be washed and how can water go thru it? Is it a proper wudhu or not if it's like that ? That's my question and for the halal nailpolish, I think it comes abck to us individually whether we want to believe it as halal or not. Allah is ghofurur rohim :) Wassalamualaikum Please respond... thank you :)

Hana I just read this and its a good point. I beleive that if you dont have a proper facilty to do wudu -- eg if u were in s public place or work then dampen over socks so at least some water penetrates. and same goes for dry abalution wudu. my understanding of this is that only if u dont have water eg your in a desert as a last resort u can do a dry wudu -- and i believe if water is available then u must use water as the dry and the dampening of socks is a last resort option. I hope u get what im saying

I think (please don't quote me) it is only in extreme circumstances if water isn't available (tayamum) and in Relation to over shoes or socks I think it defies wudhuu and would probably be easier to just take off your socks and shoes than have gross wet/ damp shoes or socks 😕. I do believe that whuduu has both spiritual and physical cleansing purposes as water has calming properties and is often used for meditative rituals all across the world. Now In saying that I would never dare judge anyone on how they prefer to do heir whuddu because I do believe intention is key!!Just my opinion ❤️

The first 1 month or so after reverting, I had nail polish and carried on with my prayers as usual. I was shocked when I heard about this one. I cooked and ate with bare hands with my washed hands, was I dirty too? Also, how is wiping over socks okay but washing hands with nail polish on not okay (permeable or not). Isn't this inconsistent? Further, the henna nail stain and oil also coats your nail such that water will also not reach the nail on a microscopic level. We need to think more holistically and logically while issuing fatwas

in islamic law regarding wudu (wash) its been said if theres a barrier between the skin/nail etc which prevents water touching it, the wash/wudu will be incomplete. it even mentions if u weae very tight jewellary such as rings on fingers which u believe theres a possibilty water might not access that area, u should take the ring off or move it in order to let the water through the skin. so normal nail polish is a barrier. another factor is wudu itself is not logic. so even if we fart why do we hv to wash our hands and face? the scholar here argues about logic. wudu defies logic so the arguement is weak.

@jiyan2220

You can wear it after making wudu, or if you are on wudu and wear it. But making wudu after doing your nails makes that wudu invalid and so is the prayer. Evidence below x One of the conditions of tahaarah (purification) being valid is that the water must touch the skin.

The problem I have with this topic is that you can’t find anywhere the mention of nails, Wudu is about skin, and they are all saying water should touch skin but nail are not skin guys. Also there are so many other situations when there is impermeability but wudu is still valid : like henna on the hair (not the coloring the compact matter), even prophet have something thick on his hair during 2 weeks on hajj, same for oil on the hair or long and full big beard, obviously water doesn’t touch the skin in these situations. Some of them are also saying filth under the nail is ok lol how is that logical ? oulémas focus only on woman nails, even it’s not skin at all it’s a dead part, I never understood this inconsistency if someone has real sources from Coran or Hadith which are clear about this specific area I’m curious to see. Islam is supposed to be easy, nail polish is not just for beauty a lot of people have a very fragile and broken nails, it’s not easy to manipulate things everyday with those you hurt yourself a lot and there are products for nails that give strength to nails like this but because guys in Saudi said no haram we have to be silent and suffer, I never liked this kind of fatwa, no effort at all. So thank you to this imam to be so clear and understanding

Have always been on the side of avoiding nail polish and actually its not been hard coz I grewup being told its haram tho what the sheikh said is very logical and made me question what I have been believing all this time its still better to be on the safe side everyday something new comes up and if we let ourselves as muslims to follow these treads its not helpful to us in anyway. At this point there is another thing of adding extra nail layer to our nail tho it just started out as nail polish only now I guess nobody can literally do nails with out adding another nail layer coz guess what it looks nice. Its really not worthit at the end of the day

As'salam alikom ,, It is an interesting topic indeed and i thank you for shining the light on it. I have a couple of comments on the subject and the sheikhs points: 1- on the note that we have to worry about other peoples thoughts on the islamic rules and laws : - if we were worried that a law or rule would stop ppl from becoming muslims then we would have to allow alcohol, adultery, ... Etc. - we shouldn't compromise at the expense of the acceptance of our prayers. 2- when comparing "henna" to nail polish we have to understand the difference that makes "henna" ok in the eyes of scholars and not nail polish. - nail polish is a plastic material that prevents the flow of water to the surface which its used on . henna, on the other hand, allows water to reach to the skin. Thank you 😁

Turki Al-Turki w'salam,, he mentioned other examples, i.e. oil based perfume which was the only type of perfume available at the Rasool SAW time. Muhammad SAW approved of perfume even though these do not allow water to penetrate thoroughly or at all. Also, there if no specific prohibition on nail polish as there is on adultery and alcohol. Everything is halal till proven haram, unfortunately in todays society, everything is haram till proven halal.

The evidence that it is obligatory to wash the feet is the report narrated by al-Bukhaari (163) and Muslim (241) from 'Abd-Allaah ibn 'Amr (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stayed behind us on a journey and then caught up with us, and we were late in praying 'Asr. We started doing wudoo' and wiping out feet, and he called out at the top of his voice: "Woe to the heels from the fire" two or three times.

Seeing the comments here I am really surprised a lot of women not knowing about nail polish rule. Im born to even a convert mum, but from Day 1 Knew about the nail polish rule...?!? Just like ghusl after period etc etc. But a bigger point i think Mufti Menk said.. is why wear nail polish in first place. Natural colour, like natural face no make up is best, is the most beauty in Allahs eyes because we dont display beauty... of course at times I wear make up when maybe not allowed. Ie infront of non mahram etc, but in the bigger picture make up, nail.polish is displaying beauty. Also the dubious ness of the permeability makes it too much hassle. Its nice the scholar does discuss reasons etc.. but personally overall i dont know that someone wouldnt revert just because of naol polish rule.

As times are changing newer things are being inventrd to make life easier and we were told to make ourselves better and not be stuck in the olden days. I personally will use the nail polish from now on. To each their own and you should all do as you feel is right in your heart. To me this is good enough along with all the tests i did personally. I insist my wife gets regular manicures and pedicures and even nail art . I find it very attractive quite frankly however my wife would complain other women give her looks during salah. I could only rationalize it using the same fiqh as leather socks. It never made sense to me that if you make wudu get ur nails done and when you re-do your wudu it should still be valid. As wiping over leather socks would. Further more the underside of the nails are exposed to water . So is it necessary to use nail polish no but I prefer my wives to always have their nails done and personal care done regularly. Just my 2 cents
