I love my FTdx-10! I love the filters on it. The roofing filters are a game changer! I also love APF. I had it on my FTdx-1200, and it worked well there. I took my FTdx-10 to Field Day this last summer, and used it to run the club's CW station. One of the guys working the station with me - who was an Icom owner - remarked to me after that he was really impressed with the selectivity that the rig had. I only have the 500 hz roofing filter on mine, but it was enough to impress an Icom guy!

I think the IC-7300 is a great starter to intermediate transceiver. It certainly has its place. But it ranks lower than 20th in selectivity. It’s difficult for a pure SDR to beat a hybrid. The FT-710 is the only pure SDR to beat a hybrid in selectivity. It beat the Elecraft K3S. But it didn’t beat the FTdx10 and the FTdx101. If someone is willing to put in the time and effort to learn the FTdx10 as their first transceiver, they can circumvent spending money twice - once for a starter radio and later for a contest class radio. Yaesu transceivers have a learning curve. That’s why I spent the time making tutorial videos for my Patreon team members. I have a series for the FTdx101, FTdx10, and FT-710. If you are an avid CW user, I recommend adding the 300Hz roofing filter. One of the videos in my FTdx10 tutorial series shows how to install the filter plus some before and after footage. It might be one of the public videos. I don’t remember. There are 99 videos in the series thus far, but most are only available for S7 (Executive) Patreon or S9 (VIP) team members.

Thanks for the video Doug. I'm always learning something new when I watch one of your videos, yet you are always reinforcing what you have been teaching in the other videos.

I’m glad you are finding the videos helpful, Jim. Because my videos are filmed with real-time scenarios, I deal with things as they happen. So I might use a technique that I taught in another video, though unplanned. I hope it helps the techniques become second nature. Many techniques can be combined, according to the situation.

Great tutorial Doug! I’ll have to try CW pitch of 600hz for weaker stations . I usually have mine set to 560 hz for everyday cw OSOs.

Hi Doug! I like 550Hz for casual QSOs. But, for my ear, 600Hz cuts through with weak signals.

@@n4hnhradio used 600hz with notch and contour to pull out 2 qrp POTA stations . It worked perfectly!

Filtering and noise reduction are main topics on my channel. If you can’t hear them, you can’t work them.

Yes, the Contour Filter can be a good utility for CW.

s meter is not moving, so preamp usage is ok, someone told me that many moons ago. :) I like your rig, i have the ftdx101mp. I remember when i discovered the APF on my elecraft kx3, O M G, on some signals it was phenomenal, sometimes it just rang, but boy when it worked(more often than not) it was night and day. Good stuff. 73 de OY1R
