Apologies for the delay in-between videos lately. I'm going to be taking a break from long-form content for a while- I really enjoy it but it's insanely time-consuming. As an android guy, the 4S will always be my favourite iPhone. Everything about it is just peak iPhone to me, the design, the square home button, the introduction of Siri, the skeuomorphic design of iOS 5/6, I could go on and on and whilst it's mostly nostalgia, i really miss the days when Apple actually felt innovative and unique.

iPhones will last a long time as long as you take care of them, the battery will wear out but it’s pretty inexpensive to get the battery replaced. But if apple discontinues batteries for certain models, I would not get the battery replaced. Non OEMs are known to cause usability issues and can even brick the phone permanently

This was my first iPhone, i had Sprint and up until the iPhone 4s was released iPhone was exclusive to cingular (AT&T) the iPhone was so amazing coming from a Nextel. It will always have a special place in my heart and in my opinion has the best looking design and feel of any iPhone of its era, way better than the 6 with its rounded edges. When they finally brought back the flat sides on the iPhone 12 I was so happy. The iPhone 14 is perfect for me, like if the iPhone 4 and X combined.

The 4S was my first iPhone, back when the 5s was the main. It was such an awesome phone, and I was so happy to have it. I used it for many years, making sure not to update it when I heard it started slowing it down. My next upgrade was the first SE that released, and my mind was blown with how much better that phone was. I still have that phone in a drawer and it works, but the battery decayed after so many years of use. I eventually got a used 8 Plus that I still use to this day (I've said this in your comments several times before, before anyone calls me out) and besided needing a battery replacement, its pretty much perfect still. I wouldn't trade it for anything currently.

iPhone 4S was my first iPhone, my mom gave it to me. It was my favourite, it took great photos and I loved it. But the iOS 9.0 was a huge pain. Day to day tasks were so painful and slow. I was sad to see it, because it was such a great device. My next phone was the first gen iPhone SE. Man, i used it for 7 years, it got 7 years of software update. I still have that phone and it works frickin great on iOS 15. It never slow down or stutter. I am so happy Apple learned from their mistake from iOS 9 on iPhone 4S. And I'm really glad and proud that I have lived through and experienced both.

Siri was severely under-implemented much to the detriment of a good friend of mine who tried to use it while succumbing to the horrible effects of ALS. They really should have handcuffed some of their designers and forced them to use the phones by voice alone until that experience is acceptable. A lot of nasty edge cases where the phone would be softlocked from a voice only perspective when finishing a call and a few other situations.

The iOS experience that brought me the most amount of joy and excitement at the time was definitely easily the iPhone 4 on iOS 5. I was so hyped after watching the iOS 5 announcement that I woke up super earlier before school and kept hitting the "Check For Updates" button in iTunes on my laptop with my iPhone plugged in via 30-pin. Unfortunately I had to go to school before the update was actually available, but the second I got back, I ran to my room and hit the button again, and there it was! I was so flipping hyped, the new notifications looked cool as heck, I loved the look of the notification banners (I still think those looked better then than they do now) and the notification center was a really cool aesthetic. The thought of updating to future versions of iOS OTA was also totally insane to me, and iMessage was going to be a total game changers for my friends who had an iPod Touch but not a phone. The awe of that release honestly never even really went away, I was still thrilled by it by the following year when iOS 6 came out. Good memories.

I'm terms of software support, it is worth noting that Android actually has much longer app support than iOS. For example on Android 5.1 lollipop can still run apps like Facebook and KZbin and Pandora and many others while iOS 9 can't although they are about the same age from around 2015. However we can give Apple some credit for supporting their older devices longer than say Samsung or Motorola to compensate for the shorter app support lifespan.
@DocTime56

While I agree with you in that regard, it’s not that necessary for developers to support such old versions of iOS, since iPhones keep OS updates for longer than pretty much any Android device from the same era. A 2015 Phone would be the 6s, which is running iOS 15, and 2014 and 2013 devices are running iOS 12, there’s no need to support 2015 software when the only devices stuck on it are 2011 iPhones. On Android, you can easily have 2016 and even 2017 mid to low end phones running Android 5

@@DocTime56 I think that's why we can at least give Apple credit for supporting their devices longer to compensate for the shorter app support life. Of course on an old 4S that I have, I found that I couldn't download hardly any apps anymore even on iOS 9.3.6, so I jailbreaked it and downgraded it to iOS 6.1.3 and from there I was able to load some older apps on there. At least the 4S is much faster on iOS 6.1.3 than on iOS 9.

This is absolutely correct, while ios has better OS update support, android apps can run on very old version like lollipop or some apps can run their latest version even on kitkat.

@@whewmancool that's what I found even on a 1st generation Motorola Moto G phone with Android 5.1 that I remember originally buying in 2014. Even today, I can still use recent apps like Facebook, KZbin, Pandora, Spotify and many others without issues although a bit slow. On the iPhone 4S even with the latest iOS 9.3.6 that it supports, if I were to try and download most any apps, it will just say that it's not compatible or that it requires iOS 10 or newer. So actually 2 years of support from Samsung on Android is just as good or better than 5 or 6 years of support from Apple.

The iPhone 4s getting iOS 9 was actually a miracle to me 🤣 it was my first iPhone after coming from Windows Phone in 2015 and despite it being slower iOS was incredible it felt ok at the time not brilliant but ok I think nowadays if my iPhone 4s was actually still working and I used it yeah I’ll probably say it’s insanely slow compared to my iPhone 13 👀👍

A suggestion, if I may. Instead of *android phone x amount of years later,* how about (for example) Android 5 in 2022. I think it'd be interesting, at least in my mind, to discuss what different OS/software's impact on tech has been like and what your thoughts on them are.

Questions. When did Apple use bluetooth for music. Because I was watching a youtube video where a guy was using the very first iPhone for a week. Where he got he's airpods to connect but would only work with phone calls. So when was music introduced to bluetooth.

2:52 - You actually receive 4G (not LTE) on the 4S. I had one on AT&T back in 2012-2014 and received 4G on it (at least in the states). UPDATE: read replies

It was not actually 4G. It was purely an arbitrary marketing decision made by AT&T for its updated 3G HSPA network at the time and was nowhere near base 4G speeds. The iPhone 4S was never capable of 4G networks.

@@MikeSparksMusic Yes, however it wasn’t egregiously misleading as it was with 4G. Some phone manufacturers followed AT&T marketing and named their phones ending “4G” even though their hardware was incapable of such. Buying a phone with actual 4G was a pain.

Am I the only one that thinks that having more years of support, even if a devices is getting slow,is a reason for owning an old idevice or an idevice in general in the first place? And yes i had my iphone 4S from ios 6 to ios 9(I was even a beta tester for ios 8 and 9 before they came out for the general public) and I hadn't had any problem at all even the speed of the device on ios 9 wasn't bad, I thing most ppl are a little harsh and/or don't have patience at all.

I was used to this phone whole 2020. In the end of 2020 I finally bought a new phone. So that was the last phone that I used second hand. Seriously I had used to second hand phones between 2017 to 2020. Actually I really liked to use this phone. Because I really like the aesthetic of late 2000's and early 10's. I've had one problem and that is the WiFi problem which is not rare problem. In the time that I used this phone I didn't used with WiFi. It's just connected WiFi one at time and it lasted in 5 minutes. In this time I bought myself a Better Call Saul melody (It's still there :D). The weird thing is when my grandma used this phone before me, she can connect the WiFi. Good video Josh!

Since iPhones don’t change as much as they used to I think they should bring back the S models. The small changes nowadays don’t warrant a whole number change. But I think it’s a psychological thing, when normal non tech people see a whole new number they think it’s a vastly new or redesigned phone and are more likely to buy it than if it were just called the iPhone 13s.

48:23 similar situation with iPod touch 4.In technically ,iPod touch 4 should be able to run iOS 7 as iPod touch 4 has almost identical hardware species with iPhone 4 except iPod touch 4 has 256mb of rams and iPhone 4 has 512 mb of rams. But apple never give iPod touch 4 iOS 7 update due to the performance issues .As iOS 7 is already so slow in iPhone 4 and it will make iPod touch 4 unusable as it has only half of the ram comparing to the iPhone 4. I don’t know why apple decide to give iOS 9 to these A5 chip devices instead of ending support in ios 8 as ios 8 is already so slow on these devices. So if they decided to give ios 9 to these A5 devices, why don’t also go ahead and give the ios 7 to iPod touch 4 as both of them are technically usable but only suffer the performance issues?
