That was just perfect! Thank you! Some owners, even trainers don't have a problem to rely on aversive training tools but say no to treats 😕 Make no sense whatsoever!

I would have to agree, I have also experienced a subtle apathy of some people towards treats and other food rewards. From what I can gather, the origin of their disapproval derives from the belief that I spoil my dog, that I need to “bribe” control and mostly, that a dog should simply behave by default. Well, it’s quite interesting how their dogs never seem very behaved or well mannered (unless the owners revert to force and intimidation…sadly). On the other hand, I have noticed it can be difficult at times to reward on time, now I rather not give a treat than risk a bad deliver. Hopefully other reinforcements will work as well, I am new to dog ownership, so I am only just starting to integrate play and other methods of rewards. So far my endeavour has been quite successful thanks to this channel! :)

I believe the 'war' on toy vs food reward derives from the pressures of out dated methodologies, for example: guiding, compulsion, and corrective based methods. Trainers that use these out dated methods tend to criticize positive reinforcement (+R) based trainers for needing food rewards all the time and forever on. So the trainers/handlers that do use +R methods with the use of toys/pre mack, are in a sense trying to combat the stigma of the dog being dependent on food. But perhaps some +R (toy/premack) trainers/handlers got a little carried away with proving this, to the point that they criticize trainers/handlers for using food. That's my take anyways-great discussion topic! ^^

Great video. Is there any way you could do a video teaching how to wean off food?? It's definitely an area I struggle in with my dog so I would love for you to show how to do it. 😊

I completely agree with what you say my dog actually prefer toys so I use a tennis ball in Agility but I use treats with tricks I say it is hard for my dog to weane off tricks exept for simple ones like paw and high five so if you did a video on that it would be rlly helpfull

Kristin Crestejo, CDBC . Just found your channel. I am impressed with what I've seen so far. I am excited to see more of your videos. How would you describe your training style. I have always trained my dogs with a more praise and punishment style training. However I have an open mind and am willing to try something new with our new puppy. Would you be willing to give me some advice or encouragement. I know your time is valuable, so I appreciate a response. Thanks in advance.

Kevin Pollard humane based. Plain and simple. I don't do anything to purposefully hurt a dog psychologically or physically for any reason. I will communicate displeasure with a dog (say when a puppy bites me purposefully) or a dog is being insanely excited and we need to calm them down.

Kristin Crestejo, CDBC . That sounds logical. The fact that you said that you do communicate displeasure shows that you are very reasonable and not fanatical like some I have listened to who say they will never say no to a dog ever! I am motivated to watch even more of your videos. Also, thanks for responding.

I am so glad you uploaded again! Can you upload more? Also I know you use positive reinforcement but what are your thoughts on prong collar? I personally love it but would like to hear your thoughts

Kate Reiff I am also a positive reinforcement trainer and I am against all aversive training tools. Like prong collars, chicken chain, e-collars. I love very well fitted no pull harnesses, and some fun training.

Agnes Kavalecz Horstmann at least from your comment you seem to realize the difference between an ecollar and a shock collar. I use a ecollar too. They have been amazing for one of my dogs but my other dog I couldn't use any of these training tools because she wouldn't have a good response to them. I have used a prong with her and she didn't mind it but she does well on a flat collar so I will stick to that. Lily (my dog who I have used all of these training tools with) loves them compared to her harness. I'm working on getting her off her prong collar to a flat and she is doing great!

Kate Reiff E-collars, shock collar, they can name it differently but they are all the same, vibrates, beeps, shocks. They all function the same way. I use to use one long before i became a trainer and I realized the negative affect of it. You can teach ANYTHING to your dog with +R, you just have to know how. Good luck getting your pup off of the prong! 😊

Agnes Kavalecz Horstmann thanks! I notice a difference and my older dog used to be on a bark collar (my parents were told they had to or she had to be put down and she would only bark when they were away). She has had very negative effects from it. Every time she hears a sound like the beep before it used to shock her she gets scared. But Lily responds great to it. Also would like to mention how kind you are being though we have a difference in opinion!

Kate Reiff Oh, poor pup! I bet you could see that in all dogs when they are on a bark collar. Behind all behavior "problems" there is an underlying issue. Maybe the pup is already anxious, bored, has separation anxiety, etc... Well, thank you so much! I am not just using +R with animals but with people, too. It also really hard to come through nice in comments. I learned, I learned a lot. I am very happy your are here, because that means you are open minded, you are eager to learn and you want your best for your pup!

Hi, I have a 5 month old border collie mix. Whenever I throw a ball or show her toys she has no impulse to play or fetch it even at an earlier age. She might chew a toy for a short while if she gets bored, but that's about it. Is there a way to get her excited about a toy or if I throw a ball? Or is this simply a characteristic of her personality?

WOW! that's weird! But not uncommon. There are some dogs that have limited or no prey drive. It could be her personality, does she show any interest?

I have new border collie puppy and have had success with tricks using hand motions but how do i get her to listen to verbal commands? Is this achieved by repetition by saying command combined with hand gesture?
