This is a how-to dog training video on teaching your dog to look at you on cue, while walking. Progressive Reinforcement is the only method I use to train any trick or behaviour.

Today I made him really tired : while walking off the leash, and wondering if he would come back if I called him, I just called his name, while walking with the dog ahead of me about 50 m, I just turned around and walked back. After a while he came racing by. I did that a few times : calling his name and turning aound, Every time he came racing by. After a while I didn't have to call him, as soon as I turned around and walked back, he reacted and came back.... He liked that game ! Now I know he keeps me in his eye !

I think your suggestions and tips are excellent. However, I always like to give my dog a release command The usual release command that I use is the word “break” and I Pronounce the word quickly and at a slightly higher pitch, which dogs usually enjoy. My voice for directing the dog to do something is usually lower pitch with more authority. dogs enjoyed this so much that they just think of the word “break” as another small reward, in of itself. Finally, I also have a border collie, they great great, even if my BC is smarter then me. After all I’m “ the dope on the rope” LoL 🚶🏼♂️🐕🦺

I have had border collies for a very long time, they are unbelievably easy to train as they are so eager to please. You don’t need to feed to train although you can use that too you just need to use praise and a game they love for the real wow moments. They learn so quick you have to get your brain in gear to keep up.

Hi Kristin I have a 2 year old collie he's very good at this training now but I struggle to get him to walk loose lead once we are on an actual walk - it's mainly excitement and is much better when I have tired him out with a ball. It takes constant sausages or correction to get him not to be walking ahead of me even though he doesn't pull now. Is it a case of just being persistent and things will click or do you have any other tips.

Hello, I am picking up a new border collie pup at the end of the month that I plan to train to work my sheep and goats. I have had a border collie in the past that I trained to work livestock and many other tricks and behaviors. One problem I had that I need advice for is that the dog would wonder off and not stick with me at all times except when I work him. I dont need him at my leg but close by when Im working around the farm and not wonder off. Thanks. Kim

A hot dog, split down the middle in half then cross cut 9x, makes 20 treats. put in a baggie then in your pocket. Never leave a baggie laying around, put directly int trash. Tis works with 6 week old puppies and 6 year old dogs. Very inexpensive. Great results.

Yes. This is old and I am commenting. But I have a mutt and I want to know if this mostly works on Border Collies. She is good at walking on a leash but the thing is she likes to bark at other humans and dogs. And is most likely to charge forward and try to play. However. This annoys me and my mom. And if I taught my dog this I am curious how she will react around strangers then. I'm very in need of this trick in case of leash pulling on a bike and getting pulled off. So please reply

If you condition your dog to look at you with noises, then they will only look at you when you make a noise. one should patiently wait for the dog to look at them and mark and reward for choosing to look at you...
@cellopets5 жыл бұрын
True that an unprompted behavior which is then reinforced tends to be stronger than one where you start with a cue from the get-go. But my guess is that in this particular case, it won't matter too much in the end.
@redzisan8 жыл бұрын
Cool staff. But would not it lead to dog constantly wanting reward and you walking with bag of food everywhere you take your dog? Or after some time its not about rewarding him every few ceconds? Sorry for noob questions :-D I am completely new to that.
@Krissykris14688 жыл бұрын
+Radek Skrzypczak Generally when you use rewards, it's done in the acquisition stage of training (the very beginning where the dog has no idea what we're teaching). As you move forwards and your dog can perform the behaviour in all environments WITH the reward, we start to wean out the food (every 2nd, or 3rd successful opportunity). During the "no reward" opportunities we HIGHLY praise the dog to let them know they're doing it right. Food is a primary reinforcer, praise is a secondary reinforcer that we are training. It takes a lot of time. Owners usually stop the rewards once the dog has the behaviour, but the problem is the dog thinks they're doing it wrong if all rewards STOP, so they stop doing the behaviour without the food. Have you checked out my video "Understanding how your dog learns" ? If not, this will give you more insight on how to successfully train your dog.

I like a lot of what this trainer does and her willingness to teach us humans. I highly disagree with the whole anti-prong and electronic collar, but that a personal choice of mine knowing that not all dogs are the same, a few of the k-9 handlers and trainers I know. Yes, yes I know they look barbaric. They really are not if they are used right. like with any training aid or tool there is a right and wrong way. Thanks for the videos.
@Krissykris14688 жыл бұрын
Mos REdrum I do believe punishments work, otherwise they wouldn't still be used, correct? However I believe that in order to teach a dog obedience and behaviour modification it's highly unnecessary to use training collars (shock and prong) to have success. These tools are strictly for handlers that want a quicker fix to the problem (can I blame them? no....) However, ethically it's not right if you can get the same ending with a humane method. The bonus is no ill side effects with positive methods.
@m0sredrum8 жыл бұрын
Kristin Crestejo Those very same people that would abuse the prong and Electronic collars are the very same ones that would abuse any collar harness or halti. Sadly, a lot of dogs are euthanized because people are vilified if they use these tools. I wish they knew there were other options combined with proper training and consistency can cure a lot of behavior issues. As for electronic collars I'll put the dogtra on any day in the rain or shine. It's okay up to 60 then it just starts to feel weird at full blast, yeah that doesn't feel good. I'm not sure what full blast would be used for tho....( most dogs under 20 is perfection) tap on the shoulder and hey here's $10.... Hey, Some people feel kennels/crates/pens and all collars are inhumane & unethical. Tools are tools....
@reddragonready7 жыл бұрын
Have you tried it on people? They also learn stuff way more quickly the more unpleasant the punishment. Maybe you have kids in school and can give the teacher such aids to deal with your children! So much easier on the teachers!
@m0sredrum7 жыл бұрын
You chose to look over the part where I said it's a tap on the shoulder, Hi, here have $10. And Actually, I've used it on myself as you will note in the above comment. I sure as heck won't be pulling on that leash... It's a tool, simply a tool. Again, Any tool can be used incorrectly.. It's sad, the more and more people that humanize dogs the more the dog suffers..all these people afraid to seek help from a trainer that can teach these tools correctly are afraid because of some troll in the bushes acting wild and unhinged about the subject. Their dog runs a good chance of being euthanized because of these trolls have bullied them when this type of training that she teaches failed... This trainer in this video is good, I do not disagree with what she does but I do disagree on her opinion of the subject. it's just as simple as that. Some of us are masters of picking the perfect dog to fit our training style.
@reddragonready7 жыл бұрын
Mos REdrum So you claim it's no more than a "tap on the shoulder" yet you tried it yourself and decided that "tap" is sufficient to decide if someone "tapped" you on the shoulder after doing something, you'd sure never do that again. Sounds to me like it is a lot more unpleasant than you try to make us believe it is. It also still sounds to me like it is a way to simply save the trainer work. I am not buying what you are trying to sell me.
@Krissykris146811 жыл бұрын
Usually the dog should be around 6 months as their attention span is a bit longer, but feel free to work with a young pup - you may not get a long run though. The noise in this video is to just intrigue the dog to look in your direction so you can click and reward (I use a kissy noise if she didn't respond to "look at me" right away).

Getting our heads together for using the same commands is easy. The hardest part is : we can't find anything what de dog really likes as a treat: we have bought boxes and boxes of different dogcookies, there is none he likes really. what do you suggest?He is not an enthousiastic eater eather.
@Krissykris14689 жыл бұрын
Lisette Swinnen Try using REAL chicken, roasted, or beef, maybe even deli meats. Stay away from cookie texture (hard), it takes too long to eat and the dog can disengage. Border Collies love to play as a reward as many other breeds do, try using a tug toy as a reward and work on finding a high value food reward in the meantime.

Yes, if REAL meat or cheese doesn't work, my Aussie pup lovesssss fetch. She will do anything for a ball throw. Tug is also a great idea. Collies are typical high energy play wired dogs, so use that! If you got a dog that loves play, drop it and leave it are super easy to teach!
@jawiggins109 жыл бұрын
Lisette Swinnen Contrary to popular belief, no kind of food is a real high value reward item. There are reasons that true working dogs in high pressure situations are not trained with food reward. You need to teach the dog to work for you, not for you as a treat dispenser or noise maker.
@Lulisette9 жыл бұрын
It is a weird dog anyhow. He is wagging his tail for birds and dogs, not for humans. Although he is very sweet and calm (too calm for his age). He starts listening, but only after insisting. He does not react on very happy praises if he does something good, he becomes even quieter when you tell him no. I have never seen him aggressive, to humans rather submissive. My guess is that he has been bed handled in his life prior his 5 months.Thank you for your comment. I will wait until he is an adult before judging him again. He is adorable and sweet with me and that counts.

Is anyone else tired of seeing trainers use border collies? I know they're super smart, I want to see a stubborn dog that requires more than 2 sessions to get it. Or a small dog. Good Lord, how are you supposed to treat a 5 pound pup every second and with what treat? They get full and they get diarrhea after a dozen treats. I count the treats, and I can guarantee if I go beyond the 2 dozen BROKEN pieces of Cheerios she'll have diarrhea. That means 12 Cheerios. How do you treat a dog every 2 seconds when you can only give them 24 treats? That's a very short training session.
@laurapohjola42766 жыл бұрын
Most days I give my dog's kibble all as treats during training, for sure for the first year or two with a new dog I mostly feed from my hand or by tossing the kibble one by one as rewards throughout the day. If I have a busy day I will give it from an activity ball instead. :) For new training or challenging situations I have higher value treats (like tiny pieces of liver).
@starry995 жыл бұрын
They probably use border collies because that’s the dog they own? I don’t blame them as I have a border collie and there’s no better dog breed out there. Maybe don’t feed your dog lots of Cheerios, replace it with something like boiled liver.

Try exercising the dog first then maybe try training. Or start with some easy tricks/commands and make it fun. One thing that my puppy always obeys is at feeding time I always make him sit, put his food down, and make him wait until I give the release command before he goes for the food.

Pff, cheater, uses a border collie :D....But jokes aside. We used to have a bordercollie and he was suuuuper quick in understanding new tricks. You could teach him a new trick within literally 10 minutes (or less!). Now we have a golden retriever, which is supposed to be the 4th smartest breed, but the gap is huuuuge. It takes numerous sessions for the dog to learn things, might be the stubborness of her, but I could also imagine that border collies are just that much smarter. She is still a smart one, but that bc of us was another level :D.
