Hello @freedomfan4272, Unfortunately, you must wait until 2025 when the new Hickory Aviation Museum is completed and open to the public before you can view the Harrier. The museum is keeping the Harrier (and a couple of other recent acquisitions) in a hangar until they can move them into the new museum they are currently building. Once that museum is complete, the majority of their collection will be under roof and should be a fantastic museum to visit. Cheers!

These aircraft should never be retired but in fact, upgraded. One of the most underrated aircraft that not only can it still operate as a competent fighter against anything in the air but, as a ground support aircraft, and by the way, the A10 is still a fine plane but, the Harrier is, I believe a better proposition and faster. Upgrading would enhance its already proven capabilities.

@1chish5 ай бұрын
Can I gently correct your title? The aircraft is a McDonnell Douglas / BAE Systems AV-8B. The Harrier II was a joint (if belated) development project. Many sub assemblies were made by each partner but each country carried out final assembly for their own military. The UK versions of this were the Harrier GR5, GR7 and GR9 and they had US sub assemblies as the AV-8B had British sub assemblies. Each country had slightly different fit out. The one constant throughout the variants of the Harrier was the glorious Rolls Royce Pegasus engine designed and developed specifically for the then P1127 / Kestrel in the 1960s. Every one built and maintained by RR for nearly 60 years of front line service.

Thanks @1chish for the information. I'm sure most people were not aware of this dual-country involvement in the Harrier production. Unfortunately, with the KZbin limit of 100 characters in the title, there was not enough room to include every detail. I have added BAE in the video description text. So viewers will be able to see that information. Cheers!

@@AEROWEPHILE Most welcome mate ... 👍 In fact all the Harrier I (or AV-8A and AV-8C versions for the USA) were all built by Hawker Siddeley (later BAE Systems) in the UK and exported to the USA.

They should have just modernized them and not screwed over the F-35 program by forcing them to make so many compromises so there would be a VTOL version.

The Harrier was always a STOVL aircraft although it could VTOL. The issue was overall weight hence STOVL to lift bigger weapon loads. The same issue applies to the F-35. Its called Gravity.

I was (un)lucky enough to be in 10 Sqn RE, Gutersloh BAOR. We provided the engineering support - building the metal runways (tin kicking) for these beauties in the field. When the Sqn driver picked me up, he said ""Welcome to 10 Sqn - We're disbanded"". The Iron Curtain had not long fell and the writing was on the wall for specialised units like ours. Still, I managed to get one NATO exercise under my belt and seeing these in their natural environment, operating off hastily constructed runways and pads will stay with me.

The US military is retiring planes left and right, for the few newer 'stealth' jets. The newer jets cost a lot more too, so, is it really worth it?

Cost is not always a determining factor in these decisions. Technology and time eventually render every aircraft obsolete. All military operators must continue to innovate and work towards the future. Cheers!

No-one No Army Air Force drops this style of support without something better. In the Falklands War the Harrier pilots would just "Jig" a thousand feet and watch the French Mirage fly right over top then re engage with a Aim-7 sparrow missile. How can an Aircraft go from 560 Knots to zero and then drop a thousand feet then accelerate after a "Lock On". Only one.
@1chish5 ай бұрын
They weren't AIM-7 Sparrows as they used AIM-9L Sidewinders. And that manoeuvre is called 'VIFF-ing'. The Americans claim credit for it but the British test pilots were at it when it was still the Kestrel.
