True stories like this give me a great big lump in my throat. The selfless giving of those sailors made the lump bigger.

I now live in Ilocos Norte. San Esteban is in Ilocos Sur about 70 miles away. I heard about the monument commemorating this event and visited it about 10 years ago. Unfortunately Marcos erected the monument with a plaque saying that he was involved, he wasn’t.

My dad served on the Gar later, during the Korean conflict. By then, it had been relegated to training duty. It was stationed at Cleveland, and because it was stationed at an inland lake, it had all the equipment needed to dive removed. My dad was an instructor in the communications room, served on the Gar for more than a year.

Just another example of the fact that a sub doesn't have to fire all 24 torpedoes she has to have a successful patrol. Gar had every reason to tie a broom to the sail when she returned to base.

This story is starting out really slanted. The commanding officer of the Filipino forces was an American leading Filipino's & also a rather really really dumb drunken Birtt. Thee real island fighting forces were hold up in a lavishly out fitted cave behind the shore front village. A sub SHOT a package onto the shore containing a new radio while a Frenchman and a gun maker gun smith came on shore because the Japanese forces that were around were staying out of rifle range so the Frenchman brought scopes with some old British 303 Enfield rifles to get rid of the hidden Japanese forces. Japan later sent a Sanpan boat into the calm little harbor loaded with explosives. The explosion killed quite a few American sailors and filipino workers. My grand father flew wounded people out so I know this story better than even text books tell this story. The cave dwellings area even had hot tubs heated with LP gas. The real affairs even on Guan Mendenoah and Truk Islands all need movies made of how lavish they became over night during that war. After the war many discharged vets returned to these Island which included combat wounded Admiral William Fritch. Don't get me started on how the Philippine Islands already have free American bought & paid 4 Medicare since December 1950.

Excellent ! Maybe the Ausralians can send a stealth sub to the US today and smuggle in some facemasks, PPE and other anti-covid-19 supplies. The Russian occupiers (i.e. Trump) have not been able to meet the demand.

...HERE'S SOME FREE ADVICE: DONALD TRUMP HAS AN AWFUL LOT OF SUPPORTERS- AND MOST OF THEM ARE MIGHTY PISSED OFF- DON'T ADD FUEL TO THE FIRE!!! SPEAKING FOR MYSELF- IN THE 2016 ELECTION, IT WAS A CHOICE OF EITHER DONALD TRUMP OR THAT EVIL CREEP HILIARY- AND I WAS GODDAMED IF I WAS GONNA VOTE TO SEND THE CLINTONS BACK TO THE WHITE HOUSE!! DONALD TRUMP WAS AN UNKNOWN QUANTITY- BUT I KNEW DOGGONE WELL WHAT THE CLINTONS WERE GONNA DO IF THEY EVER GOT ANOTHER CHANCE- AND TO HELL WITH THAT NOISE!!! AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED- IF THE RUSSIANS REALLY DID KEEP THAT B/TCH HILIARY FROM BEING PRESIDENT- THEN THE RUSSIANS DID THIS COUNTRY A FAVOR- AND I'M GRATEFUL TO THEM FOR IT!!!
