It sucks in the Persian Gulf, but can be the best thing when it's cold and rainy. Mostly, his only job is to watch. He'll get relieved and get to hang out in the crash shack in probably an hour or 2.

No. that’s how everyone communicates on the Flight Deck. There are few that have direct communication with the pilots. Everyone else uses hand communication. It’s not annoying at all.
