I'll confess: I'm an Akira/Thunderchild-Class fan. I just love that hull design. But I did not expect it to be such a distinct victory for the Akira. Human factor definately helped, but all those torpedoes - older or not - are nothing to be sneezed at!

The fact that an Akira class can still dish out, and take, that much punishment is a testament to the success of the design. I made a lot of use of them in ST Armada 2 because of their 360° torpedo coverage. No matter where the enemy is, it can put torpedoes on target.

I like to believe that the Inquiry class was one of the first "Fast battleships" of the Era. It could arrive at a combat zone so much faster than another other vessel of the time, so they put all of them together as a 'fast reaction force'. More such fast classes were to follow, but these were production line Starships of the moment.

Loved the Akira as soon as they named one USS Thunderchild, it was my favourite song on the musical version of the war of the world's when I was a kid. Instant fan from then on. Glad they didn't name an Oberth class tbh or I would of been forced to love that class instead 😂

I watched Star Trek first contact on its opening night, and nothing is more memorable than the defiant, engaging the Borg and the enterprise finishing it off with quantum torpedoes 👍

The only thing that bugs me about the Akira is the torpedo launcher on the roll-bar is way too small to house a torpedo magazine big enough to keep feeding all those torpedo launchers for more than a few salvos.

Yes, I always think of First Contact when I see the Akira class. All those torpedoes coming from such a small ship. Data: Sir, that does not appear to be a [vital area]. Picard: Trust me, Mr Data. To this day, I'm still not sure... did Picard know where to hit it, or was that just an area that was so damaged that it just needed a concentration nudge (or both). 😀 And yes, I also wish I saw the Inquiry class on screen.

This was fun. I agree the winner is the Akira class too. I too found it memorable to see the Akira class fire its weapons like it did in First Contact. I wish we could have seen more of the First Contact ships in DS9. Would have been fitting to be honest. We did see a little bit of the Inquiry class in the last episode of Star Trek Picard "The Last Generation". There was some Inquiry classes I think both variants. I too would have loved to have seen it in proper combat.

I always found the Inquiry class very underwhelming in BC:RM. It looks amazing, but it really should be a LOT more powerful than it actually is. It should be making Swiss-cheese out of a single Akira class, with very little effort. "Realistically" it should be able to take out two, maybe even three of them.

Indeed. It's like 25+ years younger than the Akira and even a little bigger. But I think Riker was clearly not honest when he said the Zheng He was the most powerful in the fleet -- it seems to be more like a mass-produced warship that is easily outgunned by "premium" ships like the Enterprise-F. At least in my head-cannon :)

I am going to redo this battle in Kobayashi Maru, because the Inquirys performance here is abysmal. Will update this comment when I’ve done it Edit: So I did the battle, both ways around. The Akira is basically incapable of doing any damage to the Inquiry, it's torpedoes aren't good enough to even hit her, meanwhile the Inquiry knocks the Akira out with her opening volley.

If I remember correctly, I once read somewhere that the Akira's Torpedo pod, housed a rotating torpedo launcher which not unlike a minigun, rotates and the tube at the fore or rear, fired the round rotated to the next loaded tube to fire in rapid sequence.

Imagine a refit of the Akira class, upgrading the roll bar torpedo launchers to quantum torpedoes, upgrading the phasers to modern equivalent, adding more phaser arrays to give greater phaser coverage all around since it has more than enough power and while were at it increase the size of the impulse engines on the saucer section to increase speed and maneuverability and you'll have a monster able to survive the horrors of the 25th century

A thing that isn't brought up much is that the Akira also has a through deck hanger bay. So imagine the Akira flooding the area with multiple squadrons of fighters or shuttles, along with the wall of torpedoes, especially if all the tubes would be firing. It would be unbeatable.

It's not just the Akira that's awesome, but also the photons it fires. Not only do they look very nice, but they're also tracking like an angry wasp. I would really like to see a Borg ship with the Akira class' torpedoes-per-time-and-ship-size ratio. Like... burning through their typically THOUSANDS of gravimetrics as quickly as an Akira can do it with its 350 photons. Or, in other words: We know BC can't handle dozens of ships simultaneously very well... but how about many dozens of torpedoes flying around at the same time ? :)

A great battle! I like the Akira Class and the concept of T-Cruisers, or for *Birth of the Federation* fans, the Strike Cruiser. But, this Akira Class is a bit too robust. There is no way it should be able to tank so many quantum torpedoes. They have always been depicted as maneuverable and fast, but not that robust. Strike Cruisers/T-Cruisers generally trade off shields and phaser power for the torpedoes. An Inquiry Class shouldn't have so much trouble considering they are supposed to be 50% more powerful than the Sovereign Class. Then again, the Zheng He was missing a lot of shots too. On a few occasions their quantum barrage completely missed.

I like to think that after the last episode of picard that they would of refit and updated the galaxy, nebula, Akira and sovereign class ships with modern shields, warp cores, and weapon load outs. A Akira with some of those launchers converted to quantum launchers and modern fighters would be a nightmare on the battlefield.

Back in high school in the late 90s I remember in the Ds9 book of the Dominion war series they set up the Defiant to fire all of its torpedos in rapid secession like a machine gun. They may have even took on more torpedos for that specific mission..honestly cant remember. Anyway, Idk if its considered "cannon" but I always thought it was pretty badass none the less.

i thought the Akiras were glass cannons, massive offensive volley capability but not with shield capabilities to hang on for a slug fest, hence *torpedo boat, comes in for a devastating run on the enemy then retreats back behind some friendly heavies to reload, then comes back for another run.

I liked a lot of things in Picard, I really wish the hadn't have just ignored the 2 most interesting things to happen in the series in a while though. Like what was the giant tentacle machine thing from the end of the first season of Picard, and second why did the jirati borg queen not try to help in season 3 against the prime borg queen. All borg queens are supposed to have a connection with each other surely she would have known.

The Akira does really well long range but also has a high enough agility to dodge in close range. With updated torpedoes I think it would do even better. The torpedoes have a high degree of accuracy when compared to the Zheng He making the ideal engagement distance long range for the Akira and midrange for the Zheng He. I think the outcome would have been fairly different if you engaged the ranges differently. You could have probably gotten away with minimal hull damage on the Akira if you stuck to long range and I think the same could be said for the Zheng He if you stuck to launching all quantums at mid/close range. Ultimately I think the Zheng He is severely underpowered for power generation, shields, and phasors.

Let's be real the reason the a.i didn't beat you on round one is because of the armour on the ship, if not the Akira class would of wiped the floor without breaking a sweat. I mean it was designed to take on the Borg (sounds Swedish 😂) so it can pretty much handle most other races ships. If the federation had just pumped out Akira, defiant class and a few sovereigns the Dominion war would of been shorter and far more costly for the founders. 😂 I'm exaggerating of course but those 3 ships are some of my favourite ships of the pre Picard era (in my opinion of course)

@@StilgarAstartes I mean, given that the two ships we see using them the most, (Ent-E and Defiant), also use Photon Torpedoes from the same launchers, it stands to reason that the Akira launchers can handle them (and any other Fed torpedo launchers, frankly). Heck, the Defiant was unloading them for two years before 001- can't think of a single reason Starfleet's *checks notes* TORPEDO SHIP wouldn't be able to handle it. My headcanon is that the reason we only see the Ent-E use Quantums is that the rest of the fleet burned thru their stocks earlier on, and were down to Photons. (Also so the shiny Sovereign has something unique to show of on the big screen.)

What I don't get about treks torpedos, is that they have a set compliment, why couldn't they have an industrial replicator pumping out photons and quantums as they're fired, so they've a never ending supply and don't have to worry about storing them, I understand with torpedos that have some sort of exotic material but nearly everything is replicable. I know for stories they need to have limits but they could say because of the power drain there's only so many they can replicate at a time, have some in storage as reserve, then when power is affected in battle they can slow down production or be stopped. Maybe it's my war like 21st century mentality but I'd have an industrial replicator, replicating torpedos directly into the launcher. We've already seen ships tie phasers to the warp core and the pulsed phaser to the plasma grid(which I assume is the same or similar to warp plasma), so the same could be done with the replicator torpedo launcher. Or use Roms idea of self replication, so each torpedo can replicate while fired, imagine how many could be replicated in a 5 to 10 second journey, if it would take 2 seconds to replicate one torpedo in a 10 second journey, 1 makes 2, 2 makes 4, 4 makes 8, 8 makes 16, 16 makes 32. Some distances would be shorter, like in this battle firing from the Akira the time to impact seems around 8 seconds but some would be longer and when 6 to 10 torpedos can be fired at once, they would utterly decimate, even if you limited it to one replication per torpedo you'd still end up with double.

I think Riker was exaggerating a bit. Inquiry seems like it should be in the medium cruiser tonnage bracket, between Akira and Intrepid. I don't see how Inquiry could be as powerful as Odyssey, given Odyssey was supposed to be a fast battleship to top the Sovereign (although Odyssey appears to have been a failure both in universe and in BC given it got its arse handed to it by a RBG Galaxy Refit). But I think this settles it that Inquiry isn't the toughest or meanest or most powerful ship designed by Starfleet. Once again, it's an anti-Borg ship that's 30 years old that has to put the new pretender back in its place. I would expect a Sovereign to be able to take an Akira without too much hassle. So this begs the question, can Sovereign defeat Inquiry? I'm not sure, given that older phasers tend to be anaemic against newer shields and Sovereign is not as torpedo heavy as Akira, but Sovereign has quantums and she's a tanky ship.

The Akira class is one of my all time favourite ships ever made. I am shocked that the most powerful federation ship almost 30 years after Akira could be so easily defeated. Is there any sort of governance in this game around balancing of weaponry and technology? It doesn't appear so to me. A 30 year gap in technology today would be a chasm. 300 years in the future a 30 year gap would be a light year apart the way technology advances.

It all comes down to the mod balancing. It's very difficult to balance a ship against all the other ships. It's currently an ongoing project, with a new revision soon to be released, featuring a 100+ ships 🖖

@@RetroBadgerGaming I don't understand why it is so difficult myself. Think about it in today's standards. How technology evolves and develops. A ship 30 years ago today would be at a disadvantage to one today. A ship 100 years ago wouldn't even know what sunk it. And technology evolves exponentially. So 30 years in Picard's time would be like the 100 year gap or more today. Star Trek by JJ Abrams was another good example. That Romulan ship from 100+ years in the future was obliterating federation ships in Kirk's time. One torpedo hit almost took out their shields entirely. Anyway, I hope the new balancing coming will be more accurate.

I like the Inquiry but also hate it. It’s very new trek that they chose a mildly attractive, if bland, new ship to be the “most powerful, most advanced, and fastest in the fleet”. Everything all in one meh looking ship just peeves me. The Odyssey at least deserves the title of most powerful.

This mod of the Zheng He in Kobayashi Maru seems greatly underpowered. I've seen people play against the Zheng He in BC Remastered and its shields and weapons are far stronger. So it's probably just a mod balancing issue.
