Rick and Korbin, you are correct. Ji is a suffix that means "sir". However, since Ji is non-gender specific, it also means "ma'am". It is an 'honorific. It can also mean "yes" in response to a question or statement by a sir or ma'am. It would be like a soldier responding to an officer "Sir!", or "Ji!" Or, "Ji, hanh Ji!" "Ma'am, yes ma'am!"

When we use Ji after someone's name we basically say that we want to 'live' a little like them, we want to live a little of their passion or sukoon or such qualities which makes them respected. Ke chalo thoda unki tarah Ji lete hain. In this case say we want to live a little of the humility of Ustad Zakir Hussain or to live a little of his dedication, to live a little of the way he effortlessly becomes the medium between the divine and the audience. :)

Rick and Korbin, time for you to listen to something else now (no disrespect meant for Ustad Zakir Hussain - it was because of him and his father's performances that I learnt Tabla for sometime). Please listen to Dhrupad by Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, Mohi'Bahauddin Dagar, Pelva Naik, etc.. This is unlike anything you have heard in Indian Classical Music.
