A Utah County couple that discovered they unwittingly bought a stolen construction vehicle ended paying big for their honest decision to return it to the rightful owner.

It wasn’t stolen by a good person; a thief stole it and sold it fraudulently to an innocent victim, cheating them out of thousands of bucks. That innocent victim, upon figuring out that “their” skid was stolen, did the right thing-they returned it. Then they were out the money that they were fraudulently charged for the skid by the thief. I hope the thief has to pay it back and does hard time besides.

They didn't sit down and discuss whether or not the rightful owner had insurance, if they got it free in a drawing, if Uncle Bob gave it to the owner for a November 12th just 'cause the Uncle had ~20 grand to burn on something. They returned it because that's what you do. Sure they could have helped them offset their loss, maybe they cannot afford to. The construction company DOES HAVE EMPLOYEES to think about as well. The construction company would have put a claim through the very day it was stolen and the insurance would have paid it out that week as the construction company would have insurance that pays out quickly so they can get a replacement asap and resume work.

It takes a long time to get paid from the insurance company in these situations. Not to mention it is not always in the businesses favor to open a claim. That can be more expensive in the long run than the loss of the machine. Especially if the machine is not brand new, or paid off. 10k with 8,000 hrs on the machine vs 80k and 25 hrs gets treated differently. Ultimately there's a lot of variables that we do not know.

Something similar at another scale happened when I was a student with a bike I bought in a second hand place. It lasted me 1 day, another student recognized it and their parents told me it was indeed his, stolen a few days ago. What can you do? I returned it to him, lost 100 francs which was all the money I had then and had to walk to school until I could save 50 francs and buy me a 12 y.o. rusty bike (nobody would ever claim). The sad thing is that in most states, had the Jolleys never returned it or said anything about it, and if they had a bill of sale from the thief who sold it to them, there would have been no legal way to force them to return it, as they bought it entirely unaware it was stolen. There was literally no due diligence this couple could have done to verify whether or not the machine was in fact stolen prior to purchasing it. Construction equipment does not have a title like a car. The construction company that it was stolen from almost certainly had it insured and filed a claim. Insurance would have paid out, and then it would've been the insurance company's problem to go after the thief and wring the money out of him.

They could less about obtaining the equipment as it has depreciated and they would eat cost to sell it for the value vs claim. The same thing happened in my state some years back. A lady bought a used backhoe for her under ground tank removal business only to find out that it was stolen. The trouble with this equipment is that in most cases one key fits all. The best thing to do is put a Lojack on your equipment if you are leaving it off site.

There is a very high probability that the couple would likely have sold the machine when they finished their job. That is a 20K maybe even 30K machine and with a trailer. They saw a profit as would most. Police would have found it. Better they return it than get arrested for selling stolen goods. The contractor can't just let them use it "until they are done" he has bills to pay too. He can help, and most likely will. When he does he gets free air time on the news. win win.

The buyers did the right thing and it is heartening to see honest people still exist. One warning!!! The skid steer sold for about a third of its retail value in today's market. If some thing seems to be too good of a deal, you had better listen to the warning flags. Skid steer loaders are selling at record prices right now. Junkers bring $10K. So a late model one like this is easily a $30K+ machine.

No they didn't, just because the same person you bought a peice of equipment from sold stolen equipment doesnt mean they have to go through the effort to find whether or not that particular peice of equipment was stolen or have to track down the original owner. If police contacted them and told them it was stolen and they didnt turn it in then they would be charged.
