Utah family devastated after high school senior killed in tubing accident

Kirsten Beagley, 18, was tubing with her friends Saturday at a popular sledding hill at the Cleveland Reservoir area of Huntington Canyon when her tube went onto the road, killing her.

I’m a doctor who worked at the base of a ski area and I saw a ton of terrible accidents from tubing. People hitting fences, trees, cars, flipping over and crashing into icy areas. High speed, no steering, no brakes and no helmet =bad idea.

@@marilynmckenzie2111 not really double... more weight would add a little more speed but physics includes friction, how far forward or backward they were on the tube which would change the speed... many factors and none of them are the girls' fault.

@@LAFITZ10 you act as if the girls had a gas or brake pedal to slow down.... tubes on snow don't work that way. they weren't being reckless. just a horrible stroke of bad luck that the tube must have hit a patch of snow that had melted and re-frozen, making it much slicker than fresh powder

The same exact thing happened to me when I was little. My uncle who is 6 feet and weighs 200lbs or more and I were sledding down the mountain when we hit the street and his entire body rolled over on mine and we flipped on the street road. My teeth scraped against the cement and my entire face got scratched from the street. Seeing this reminds me of how lucky we are to still be here. This is so sad.

This is much more dangerous than skiing. One year, I knew two people who were paralyzed from the waist down from tubing.

I went skiing last year and even skiiing was sketchy af I went down the mountain after only a few hours of practice and I could barely steer in the high speed I almost froze up and went straight for trees Horrible design of the course this was in Breckenridge colorado

If you are sledding or tubing and it's out of control ... ROLL OFF! Just bail out! You might still get hurt, but your chances of surviving go up.

Common sense should use this tragedy as a cautionary tale. Kids , don’t sled down hill that leads to highway , even if your parents don’t see the danger. Think worse case scenarios before risking your life and ask is it worth it ?

Tubing, bungee jumping and zip lining are three of the most dangerous activities one can partake in. When I was younger, me and my friends went horseback riding, bowling and roller skating.

Bungee and zipLining, really? I’ve never heard of anyone dying from those, except a zipline where the person missed their attachment/hook-on-rope and not sure if ever heard of bungees breaking.

Sincere condolences to the family on such a tragic loss. But to say they "were doing nothing wrong" eliminates the opportunity for this young lady's accident to possibly save others. Something was most certainly done wrong. Choice of sledding path? Choice of equipment? Timing? I credit many years of safe piloting and motorcycling to learning from others' mistakes. And I sincerely hope that if I ever make a serious error, the accident will be scrutinized so that others can learn from it.

In these times we are heartbroken because we wanted one more hug, one more kiss, one more time to tell a loved one ALL the special things they mean to us. Tubing is very dangerous when I was 18 years old a group of us from my church when tubing, my friend and I were on a tube and we went down this steep hill we were going really fast and the tube turned we were going backwards, if it wasn't for my boyfriend trying to slow us down we would have went off the cliff into the street down below. Unfortunately we still ran into a tree, my friend missed the tree, but I didn't, I just remember having a concussion I didn't know where I was, my friends didn't seek help for me. I kept trying to stay awake on the car ride home but I was in and out of consciousness. I'm just lucky to be alive.

When it's icy the tubes keep on going...I went over a bank years ago and crashed to the renting building and also hit two snowmobiles. My head missed the handlebar and accelerator lever by half an inch. Be careful out there... Condolences to this family. Really a freak accident.

My husband took our children tubing here in Tooele, my son went way too fast, launched past snow bank and ended up 7 feet off the ground. My husband was lucky to be ready to run to break his fall. This poor family. So young.
