Dion's unmatched perspicacity paired with his sheer indefatigability made him one of the best tennis players on this channel.

This was a tough match! I think you mentioned it but you had major success in points where you attacked his forehand. ie 13:25 was solid strategy. His backhand had very little spin but he hit more targets and passing shots with it while his forehand was super vulnerable when you pressured it. I def think you could have approached net to his forehand way more as when you did he typically gave you more neutral looper balls that are easier to crush at net. I didn't count but i'm pretty sure almost every passing shot he hit when you rushed the net came from his backhand. Your inside out forehand is looking dangerous! So dependable! My go to is inside in (lefty lol) and I always seem to strugglle with inside out. Great video!

I agree! I should have been approaching off shots hit to his forehand. Thanks for the advice!

Look at the number of kick serves to his backhand on the ad side that he floats or hits back to you directly through the middle of the court. Vs a consistent pusher, aggressively attack the net. Move him off the court with your serve then come in and volley. The number of forehands you hit with both feet close to the service line and then you retreat to the baseline is crazy! Step in, flatten those shots out, hit to a corner and approach the net!

What % of points did you win at the baseline and what % of points did you win where you came to the net?

Your mentality when you earn short balls inside the court is the same as when you are behind the baseline - get to the ball and stop, position your feet, hit, and have no intention of moving towards the net. You should be utilizing approach shot footwork patterns to maintain your momentum forward through the shot and be able to get forward much quicker. With how much topspin you hit with, I think you would see more success taking off a little pace if necessary in place of hitting a wider cross court angle with your forehand when you get defensive/neutral balls - I think you could have had him hitting on the run a lot more than you did.

Lots of good ideas here Dakota. I'll have to look into some approach shot footwork patterns and start utilizing them. Appreciate the comment!

@@advantagetennis3459 100% agree, if you develop that footwork pattern and buy yourself time to get to net by whipping him off court with a loopy deep ball, I'd pick your volleys over his ability to pass you in that scenario. He did do a great job of mixing in the flattened hard ball to send you a message and it's never easy when you play a pusher that can also crush the ball intermittently. Overall though his strokes seem to float a bit when confronted with higher, loopier balls with topspin on the move. Great adjustments from both of you and a real pleasure to watch.

@@icutenniswithdr.j536 I'm sure I'll be playing Dion again soon. I've been getting a lot of practice with players with similar play styles to Dion, and I've been doing better. Though, always a ton of room for improvement. I'll hit those approach shots and follow them up to the net as best I can.

@sauloeduk I agree with you! I need to gain more confidence in my volleys before I can do that but with more practice in and out of matches. I'll get there soon!

@@advantagetennis3459 Yes but the point is also that many times you wont have to volley. Applying pressure will make your opponent commit more mistakes either when he goes to the passing shot or to the lob. If his shots fall falls short (like close to the service line,) , hit the forehand and go to the net. You ll see that at least 30% of the time you wont have to volley if the approach is decent.
